Bravely Yakuza: Like a Default: 2 races in 1!

Recommended Posts

Thanks for letting us standby for another race guys! It was fun to track.
It's not over, but yeah, it's been a bit slow. Sorry, the sudden release of the fan translation of DQM2 caught me by surprise and I dumped more time into that in 2 days than I did Yakuza in 2 weeks. I've enjoyed my time with Yakuza, but being able to play on a PS4 is just something I barely get good time to do. Going to try to keep playing 1-2 nights/week

Trying to play Bravely Default 2 right now feels like I’m forcing myself to play it rather than I want to play it, so it’s going on the back burner for awhile. I don’t think it’s bad, but it’s just not clicking with me.

Happens to all of us. Now there’s no pressure and no rush lol.

At the start of Chapter 1 in Bravely Default II. Ended up putting the game on this afternoon and mainly did job class grinding in the prologue with the help of Sir Sloan. Got everyone up to level 9 Freelancers for the JP Up passive skill, but inadvertently gained a lot of extra exp and main levels because of it. Oh well, from having played the final demo I know that chapter 1 is going to be a #$*!, so I’d rather be a little overpowered and be able to level up job classes all the faster.

Anyway, currently have everyone working on Monk because I remember that being a pretty strong class in the final demo. Hopefully my knowledge from this point of the game will let me get through it a lot easier than I did a few months ago from that demo I’ve mentioned.

Made some progress in Chapter 1 of BD2. Got the Bard and Beastmaster asterisks, and am now heading to Bernard’s Mansion to try and get the water crystal.

Ran into Shirley at the casino in Savalon and it seems like she’s an asterisk holder. You can’t challenge her again until you do more of the card battles, but I can’t say I’m having a lot of fun with the card game. Maybe there are easy opponents you can keep fighting again and again just so you can eventually fight Shirley and try and get her asterisk.

Got the Thief and Berserker asterisk last night. Thief wasn’t so bad once I figured out you could consistently put the boss to sleep, but the Berserker was another story. The game tries to fool you into using element attacks on him, but that’s a bad idea since the boss will counter you pretty hard. Seemed the way to go was to use physical attacks instead. If I had leveled up Thief on someone I might have been better off, but I pulled through and won even though I had some close calls.

Got the Gambler job class this morning. Interesting how there are optional classes you can obtain, sort of like how so many were optional in past entries. Battle wasn’t too difficult either, and after messing with the class a bit...I’m not sure this is one I’ll stick with. I did level everyone up enough in it to get the 10% money increase, and being able to stack it to make a total of +40% money is cool. I’m fine on cash now, so will likely use this ability later.

Also, the Thief’s Godspeed Strike is just stupidly powerful and I love it. I saw it mentioned elsewhere that it was one of the returning skills that got a buff, but I didn’t expect it to be that strong. Boy, definitely a surprise to see it in action.

Anyway, I’m now on to Chapter 2 and heading for Wiswald, where Elvis is from. Seems a lot of the people he knew are acting out of character.

One thing I’m liking about the game more and more is the music, specifically how the overworld theme changes depending on what region you’re in. That’s a nice touch, especially since it changes the instruments and music style.

Just finished up Chapter 4 in Yakuza. Looks like I might get a new party member. The title of the Playstation trophy was horrifyingly punny. Soap on a Rope? Hahaha

Reached the end of chapter 2 in Bravely Default 2. Got the Ranger, Red Mage, Shieldmaster, AND Pictomancer asterisks today. This part of the game has way too many dungeons back to back if you ask me.

What I definitely wasn’t expecting was the horrifying reveal of the Pictomancer asterisk user and...well, I won’t say anything else. It was just something direction and story telling wise I wasn’t expecting. I’m not trying to build it up or anything, but it was one of those moments where I said “Holy #$*!,” out loud.

It's dark.
So dark.
It's the Dark Souls of Bravely Default.

Haha. That asterisk holder would definitely fit right in with the series. Most characters you meet are either going mad or are already.

I have to say (and I’ll spoiler this just to be safe):

Spoiler

I enjoyed that boss fight because of the giant creepy mural on the wall. It reminded me of Earthbound and how, in the first phase of the final battle, you have to target the other character while dealing with attacks from the giant object in the background.

That mural was pretty creepy too. The way it moves and looks like a giant gash or something similar. Didn’t expect that and it worked to help create that scary atmosphere of the fight/end of the dungeon.

Got to the start of chapter 3. Screw that forest dungeon you have to go through before you reach the land of Rimedhal.

One major nitpick I have is with the cutscenes at the end of each chapter. They keep introducing these new characters who work for the Lord Commander of Hologard, but you don’t actually learn a thing about them. It’s just a very brief cutscene, they say something about what you just experienced in the chapter or that you obtained the Crystal, and that’s it. If these guys are supposed to be the next big bad ensemble like the Eternia top forces, I need to see more of them and know WHY I should see them as the bad guys.

Your small nitpick is one that kinda goes with the entire game. I was fine with it becuase I'm definitely more of a surface player , but all of Bravely Default 2 is... kinda generic, typical, basic JRPG. I thought it was very well done, but it's very well done... basics. There's little depth and surprise and plot-twist to this. It's JRPG-by-numbers. And that's something I'm 100% OK with.

Speaking of 100% OK. I think I need to be OK losing this competition and setting Yakuza aside until summer. One of my writing colleagues is a teacher near Tampa. He was on a podcast for the first time in a long while this weekend and talked about his Yakuza full-series play he started when Covid hit (or around there). He was doing good until school started in August. He went into detail (since some people on the podcast don't live where in-person schooling is going on) on what it's like to be a teacher in FL and play Yakuza at night. It was hilarious, but basically boiled down to "I can't play that game at night after a full day of recording lessons for kids at home and teaching in-person, the long cut scenes put me to sleep even though I like the game." Yep, that's the long and short of it.

You’re getting to the point where the cutscene length is going to drastically die down.

 sounds great.  The thing is, I actually like the cutscenes, they're good, not what I'd have expected never playing a Yakuza game before, but damn, 11pm + cutscene = :snooze:

Had a story progress making day with BD2. Got to the Rimedhal region and obtained the Salve-Maker, Dragoon, Swordmaster and Spiritmaster job asterisks. Fun boss fights aside from the Salve-Maker one, but at least it was nowhere near as difficult as the Salve-Maker battle back in BD1.

I found a DQ11 voice actor in Bravely Default 2 by the way. The man who voices Jasper in DQ11 voices a character in the Rimedhal portion, specifically the character who travels with the party once they reach the city of Rimedhal. Really funny too considering the major difference in characters this guy has voiced for in Square Enix RPGs.

Do you recognize these guys by voice alone? That’s pretty impressive, especially since Jasper wasn’t a forefront character and it doesn’t sound like the BD 2 guy was either.

That’s a cool skill/talent.

Got the Oracle job class and reached the beginning of chapter 4 this morning before work. First off, #$*! that Oracle boss fight and the third phase especially. I got really lucky that Gloria (my Salve-Maker) had a shield that blocked out the element damage of the boss’s hit all attack, so thankfully she was able to revive and heal everyone thanks to the  skills the Salve-Maker has.

Second, there was a story/character reveal I didn’t expect. One of those “Whoa, what is this?” kind of moments.

Now with chapter 4 is seems like you have to revisit previous towns and help them out since the Holograd bad guys are on the move. Not sure where I’ll head first, but I need to get these new job classes worked on for the party first.

Got the Obelisk and Phantom job classes in Bravely 2. The Phantom was one of the hardest bosses so far.

Mainly been doing job class grinding in BD2 when I’ve played it the last few nights. Been doing it for the passive skills from some of the new classes, namely the Turn Tables skill from the Phantom class. After how much trouble I was having with the Phantom class battle, I’m not looking forward to what could be next at Wiswald, or whenever I get to fight that Adam guy.

Probably overkill to do this, but I’m okay with having these new options open for the party so I can try out different combinations and see what works. I’m sure whatever awaits in the post game will be pretty tough anyway, so better to do some of this job class grinding now rather than do it all later.

The Berserker class (either main or sub) can really help speed up the process anyway. Just keep a healer on standby and you’re golden! Haha

Got the Anarchist job asterisk and have invaded the Empire of Holograd. Cool cutscenes led up to the attack too. Can’t help but think Holograd should have learned from the Varennes Empire instead; could have made gaining new allies and land much easier if they tried to help others instead of invading.

The Arcanist Asterisk holder was hilarious. His dialogue and delivery made me laugh.
