Dragon Quest III & IV: NES or Remakes?

Recommended Posts

I'm not immediately making another DQ LP, but I want to know what you guys want when I do.  The NES versions are obviously harder, so there's more strategy there... But the presentation is also dated in both, so I'm not sure what'd make a better LP.

What do you guys think?  The post-game of both will be covered no matter what, so that needn't be a factor.

EDIT: Also, I'm equally familiar with all versions, so that won't be a problem, either.

If I say to play the GBC version of DW3, will you delete your medal book and play until you beat Grandragon and get the Rubiss Sword? Because that would take a LONG time

...Crud.  Good question.  That whole thing was the most miserable experience I've ever had with an RPG.  I mean, I know how to do it "fast", but... Dang, that's a toughie.

I wouldn't play Dragon Quest at all and just stick to Final Fantasy. There's a point where simplicity and rigid tropes are taken too far and the Dragon Quest series is well past that point.
Welcome to the Dragon's Den, a site for Dragon Quest fans. May I ask what brought you here today? Maybe you should introduce yourself in the Introductions area.

I think DQ has done a good job of walking the line between traditionalism and accessibility with XI.

I'm going to raise my hand and comment on this. First, Final Fantasy is basically the . It's ushered in everything that's wrong with the gaming world and world in general. Let's take a look, shall we?

Final Fantasy 1-6 were fine to good to OK.

Final Fantasy 7 is where things went really wrong. The world had to see polygons. Bad polygons. Horrible polygons. Think of all the peoples in there late 30s and 40s right now that wear glasses. A lot of them played FF7 when they were younger. That direct correlation is enough to condem the series as demon spawn. Glasses and contacts are due to disfiguring of the eyes. What else could possibly have caused that much widespread damage other than a seemingly widespread game? Also, have you seen the grammar of kids these days? I blame that localization. People didn't just learn to text stupidly, they had an example.

Final Fantasy 8 was a low blow to the average Joe. First, gamers were given the for trying to level up or grind. That was bad. Everything we were taught beforehand and since by JRPGs were thrown out. Things adjusting to your levels? That's just gross. Even the Nexomon: Extinction game I just beat had to give homage to that mechanic and do something akin to it, ruining the fun that could have been had. Also, worldwide it completely screwed over all us solid 6.5/10 guys out there. We used to have a shot at 7s or 8s. Maybe a 9 in some dark lighting. But how the hell are we supposed to attract hotties when this 2/10 is drawing them in? For real, at this point everyone is in play for everyone else. It's disgusting. It's unreal. It's just against Darwinian Law and Nature itself. I mean, Square knew enough that this was disgusting and unreal enough to just trash the game, lose the source code. That was the best call made with the Final Fantasy series so far. 484caf979fdfedb1d20f655de93181dd.jpg

Final Fantasy 9 I've never touched. Seems a lesser demon may have been involved? It kinda went back to its roots. Maybe broken clocks could be correct once a decade or so?

Evil returned in Final Fantasy X. Oh man, don't even get me started! And the remake it spawned? X-2. OMG. People dancing and singing! What. The. Real. Hell. Haven't you ever seen the movie Footloose? Oh my, singing and dancing come straight from the Devil himself. John Lithgow explains this very clearly. I mean, there's really no reason those things should exist, let alone this evil game that espouses these sick forms of performance art. Also, the laughing scene! Enough to scare small children! giphy.gif?cid=349c9dd7m91y6hbcr1kopz7nspn0i8o3k5heuqodczpp65my&rid=giphy.gif

And I'll just round this out by other atrocities summed up quickly.

FF11 and FF14 teach it's OK to play RPGs with other people. Ick. Go lock yourself in a basement and play alone like a real fan.

FF12 played itself. How is it an RPG, it's basically Madden 2020 playing in simulation mode.

FF13 - girls can be a lead hero? Nope, that can't be true.

FF15 - dudes can try to ride around in cars and go do things? Uh, no. I mean even Trump told the Proud Boys to stand down. Wait. Did he? Yes, let's go with that. It makes my point.

Don't play FF after 6 my friends. They're the root of so many of societies evils. They teach the wrong thing. They're right wing, Marxist ideologies! Conservative socialism. Gender neutral sexist!

Have you ever played a Fallout game? You know what killed almost everyone, right?

Final Fantasy

Hold that thought. I've gotta head to a Final Fantasy fan forum, to crap on Final Fantasy.

To introduce myself, I've tried almost every dragon quest game but stopped playing either because the game was boring or bad.

I don't think you understand, a game being more generic and similar to other recognizable games increasing accessibility where doing something more original like Final Fantasy reduces accessibility.

Final Fantasy VI was probably the best RPG, Final Fantasy VII was good as well. Final Fantasy VII's detailed backgrounds and in-battle models more than make up for low-poly over-world models. Lol, funny you think that Final Fantasy VIII has bad grinding when Dragon Warrior 1 is the peak grind game. I'm sure Squall is much more attractive to women than you in real life.

Listen and take in the beauty

I'm sure you are playing alone and lack the friends necessary for multiplayer gaming.

Yeah I know, what's Lightning doing out of the kitchen anyway?

Of course I've played Fallout before, you know what almost killed everyone? I did, cleaned those parasitic humans off that wasteland, after all Nature>Humans.

Kid thinks he's tough with his rifle, lets see how well he does against my automatic mg24.

Grinding in Dragon Quest 1 was fun tho.

If this guy isn’t a troll I would be shocked. This isn’t GameFAQs, and if you want to troll a series you should go there instead.

Anyone else find it funny he didn’t recognize Kevin from the Home Alone movies in Dwaine’s gif? Maybe that’s just me.

Too bad he's gone, but I hope he sticks around to see how I fixed his quotes:

Quote

To introduce myself, I'm dragon. I've tried almost every dragon quest game but stopped playing because I started the series too late in life. I never appreciated its influence on modern RPGs, including Final Fantasy, so I interpreted the games as boring or bad, when really it's just a reflection of my personality.

Quote

I don't think you understand how much I don't understand. But I can't understand enough to help you to understand how much you don't understand about how much I don't understand. Understand? Bottom line, I'm just a kid with a lot of attitude who came in hot like, "yall betta recognize!" even though I don't actually talk like that.

Quote

My favorite Final Fantasy was that RPG one, and the one with the graphics was okay. My least favorite Dragon Quest was that one with the grinding.

Quote

I didn't find out Dragon Quest was a thing for 30 years until the Smash announcement, so now it has to suck or I'll look like a completely uninformed jerkoff, even though I wasn't even sperm when VIII came out. Though my enormously gigantic group of MMO friends are pining for my return, I must let them suffer a short while longer while I finish defecating my thoughts for your education. I assure you the honor is all yours.

Quote

I've played Fallout and like guns. Please think I'm cool.

As an aside, I love Final Fantasy VII!  It has my favorite soundtrack of all time, I love the pre-rendered backgrounds, and the story holds the same place in my heart as Princess Bride.  Something I could quote for days 😀 !

Only thing wrong with it is the translation (which there's a patch for), and the game being much too easy.
