The Completionist's Checklist

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I finished all of the main series games this year, and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a 100% completion list for each game? I've started to put my own together but got a little overwhelmed when I got to DQIX. Any input and suggestions would be much appreciated. I can add to it and include spin-off titles if anyone else is interested too.

Where is @ignasia????

He loves (or at least frequently does) research and data dumps. I think he would have some valuable input on this.

I'm OCD enough already, don't get me started.

I have too much on my plate anyway, and this sort of thing doesn't particularly appeal to me, especially as it's very subjective.  I might put in something like "maximum damage in a single hit" or something like that aiming for getting a perfect round, where within 5% of ceiling, everyone, after full buffs and debuffs, for all attacks that round.  Maybe get all Monsters in DQ7 3DS to level 99, which could take years.  99x of each medal in DQ3 GBC, which could take decades, provided the battery lasts (and literally have no life in the process).

Even coming up with reasonable lists wouldn't really be appealing.  I'd rather do what I'm doing now:

1. bits and pieces of DQ7 when I can, though I've kind of put that down to play actual games (EO4, 5, and Nexus, FF7r, and a few other backlog games).

2. DQ11 critical hit rates...which is really slow, as no one has yet manage to crack that algorithm, so it's just cataloging thousands of hits, of which I'm already nearing 30,000 just for this alone, for a fixed level, early game, as JUST a baseline for Erik and the Hero, nevermind I have another several spells to go through, then move forward and test Jessica and Veronica, then Sylvando, and so on...

3. DQ8 3DS notorious monster data, which may turn into a pure 3ds exclusive stuff FAQ, but I'm not sure if I want to take it that far.

@ignasia - That made me feel anxious and incredibly excited at the same time. I was thinking of just things that were built in to the game as an achievement or goal, but now I'm thinking wider.
@eal - Great minds think alike! I've always wanted to go back and do the extras after my main playthrough, because I've definitely missed a lot. I also thought if I told people, I'd have to follow through with it (Or at least finish my list!)

Hahahahaha.

Okay, okay, I'll back off.

The research just made me think of you :)

We all watch. There's a whole #eal channel on the Den's Discord.

For IX there's battle records that tally up the % of Weapons/Armor/Items, Quests Completed and such. You could collect everything and beat all the Quests and consider it done.

That doesn't sound quite so daunting when you put it that way. I wish I had someone to play it with. I gifted my wife and uncle a copy, neither are playing. And my uncle is a lifer when it comes to JRPGs!

Sent away for life!? Yeah, you gotta watch how far you do down the JRPG waifu hole. I draw the line at "partial nudity" myself.

There's also the idea of, if you can get infinite of a piece of equipment, and you have X number of people who can equip that item, do you get 99 total for each as some like to, just 1 of that item for the sake of the list (and any extra just for general equipment purposes, say it's a useful end-game piece of equipment, and you only want 2 even if 4 people can gear up with it), or something like X+1, where there's always an extra in the item list should everyone who can equip it, does, so it doesn't lose it's place in the list itself and go to the end of the bag.

You can get 99 of each equipment item in DQIX, but there's no Accolade for it, so it's one of those "personal bragging rights" things that's ultimately kinda pointless. I've done stuff like that before and then just felt like I wasted a bunch of time (like grinding my hero to level 99 in Dragon Quest III SFC.)  Someone out there is still trying to gather all the gold medals in DWIII GBC...

My recommendation is to only do something that you'll actually enjoy doing, something where the end result is worthwhile. Like revocating your classes up to 10 times in DQIX actually has the benefit of increasing your chances for generating higher level grottos. There's actually a point to that and a reward. Otherwise you risk burn-out, like when I tried and succeeded in getting the Platinum King Jewel in DWVII's postgame and then immediately wanted to stop playing.

Agreed @Liamland. Now I've finished the main series, I'm missing Dragon Quest and just want more (And there is plenty of it!). I've loaded up DQIX recently so I'll add some more to that section. I do get a bit obsessive, but I will stop if I get bored with whatever I'm obsessed with too.

@Plattym3 Kind of! He's currently living in Osaka and he's on his 5th year now I think. He chose it though, we didn't just ship him out to get rid of him. Obviously I've never taken advantage of this and had Amazon Japan ship things to him to post back to me!

For awhile I was backing up Quicksaves with the MC in front of each in-game story boss, so I could fight any boss at any time by loading up a second cart with the save file and hopping in with my main character as a guest. I got all the way up to Goresby Purrvis before getting bored, but I'd like to go back to it when I have spare time and finish all the way through, even the DLC bonus bosses like Nodoff.

...but spare time...what is that again?

I've added some of the extras for DQXI now. I've covered the GBC/DS/3DS/Switch ports of main series games. I've not played DQX to know where to start, but I might add some of the spin-off games. I've got a couple and passed an exam at work last month, so treated myself to Dragon Warrior Monsters on the GBC. I bought a copy from EB in Milton Keynes when it came out but no idea where it is now, probably the same place as my Gameboy Camera and Printer.

I've been playing DQIX every chance I get and am working through the normal quests first. Anyone have any advice for me post-game in DQIX? Just general stuff like what I should start with, I've started working through quests in numerical order, jumping about when I need to.

I've added a section for spin-offs. They're just the ones I own, but will add to it later (Both the list and my collection!!). There are links to guides/wikis for DQ3 now, so I'll add those to other games as I go too.
