It saddens me deeply to say this but i didn't enjoy Dragon Quest XI.

Recommended Posts

Hey woodus forums!, i'm a long time Dragon Quest fans and you might know me of previous threads i made if you don't then nice to meet you!

I've liked and enjoyed every single main Dragon Quest game including Dragon Quest X (however i'm only up to 3.0 story as now). Unfortunately it seems like the most recent entry in the series XI/11 didn't click with me and it saddens me i can't enjoy this game like the rest of the DQ fans but everytime i want to try to finish the game i get bored pretty quick.

So does annyone else share the same issue with XI not clicking on them?

No. But I had that problem with DQ9. That game did nothing for me apart from the music.

Interesting... I've only heard this from people who aren't just into DQ.

What bores you, what do you wish it did better? What are your favorite titles in DQ?

It happens to us all *cough* *cough* VI *cough*

Yeah, I’d imagine most of us have that one game on the series we just couldn’t get into and enjoy.

My favourite titles are VIII and VI.

I feel like the world, plot and the party just hasn't clicked with me like the other games did, plus i like having a big "seamless" world to explore and good music in Dragon Quest games which i feel XI doesn't provide much of either.

I do wish the world was a bit more like Breath of the Wild while exploring, so I can see you're point there

That's never easy.  Especially as it's a new game with so much content.  I adore DQ11, and it's slowly creeping up on DQ3, and may overtake it as my 2nd favourite DQ game of all time.

The only game that never set well for me was DQ1.  I cannot for the life of me find any enjoyment.  I ADORE the music.  I LOVE the flow of battle, but it ultimately feels shallow and I guess I'm not upset at the original build, as I grasp that it's a classic, but I do not appreciate the lack of consideration for expansion of content with the remakes.  There's so much to tap into.  They could even do raids on towns, as that was part of the story that led to the Scion of Erdrick making a trip out to fulfill the destiny of his forebear, and shine a light once again on Alefgard.

So how come?  What about Dragon Quest XI did you not like?

Characters?

Story points?

How the story was told?

Gameplay?

Battle Flow?

Minor details?

The music?

The overall package?

Can't quite put your finger on it, just didn't click for some inexplicable reason?

What did you like about it?

It has the most unappealing* cast in the story of DQ, so can relate.

I found the cast an interestingly diverse group of personalities. I thought the music score was lacking, though I hear the fully orchestrated Definitive Edition makes a difference.

XI does have the most well developed cast of the series, with the exception of Jade. From many of the RPGs I’ve played, DQXI’s cast felt like one of the most well done of the genre. Even Jade, despite not having that much character development, was still an interesting character.

However, I’m not going to fault someone for not being interested in the cast. It’s all opinions. There are people who love the cast of other RPGs whereas I may find them whatever. I figure it all just comes down to preferences with how you like character writing. I can tell you that, coming from an English Major background, you’ll find people interpret the same character(s) in so many ways.

It does.  The horns and wide range of low notes to high notes with little build-up or variance is still present, but it's less pronounced.  The addition of both Dragon Quest VIII's overworld theme, and the Baumrun theme when riding a sabrecat (a casino object in Act 2 in the second casino) is refreshing as well (plus you can play DQ8's music in midi format as well, and it's the PS2 rendition, not the 3DS, which is a slight plus).

As much as I like Dragon Quest XI (including Dragon Quest XI S), I find the difficulty to be all over the place, especially if you enable the All Enemies Are Super Strong, Shypox, and Super Shypox (exclusive to Dragon Quest XI S) Draconian Quests.

What I mean is that in the beginning, the difficulty with the Draconian Quests enabled is ridiculously high, which can result in a very frustrating experience.

And I don't like the fact that you can only remove Draconian Quests when in the game and you cannot change whatever Draconian Quests you want to enable when in the game (meaning you can only enable whatever Draconian Quests you want to enable when you're creating a profile, and you can easily forget to enable Draconian Quests when creating a save file, especially if you want to create a save file as quickly as possible).

However, I do like how the difficulty with the Draconian Quests enables does balance itself off as you progress through the game. I just wish the difficulty with the Draconian Quests was balanced throughout the game, instead of later in the game.

I don't share your opinions about the game, but to each their own.

I think in terms of favorites, XI is probably 4 or 5 down the list. VII, VIII, and IX hang out around the top, though I can never really decide which one is my true favorite.

That being said, I still loved the game overall and would give it a solid 9/10 as far as JRPGs go.

Both international versions of XI felt too easy, but I haven't yet played a Draconian Quest.

The cast doesn't really click with me, but I don't think any of the party members are written particularly poorly. The game is very emotional, but it just doesn't put me in the Hero's shoes like previous entries have. I feel more like a passive bystander playing XI than I do the hero.

I enjoyed it though. Far more than IX to say the least.
