Guides for main story

Recommended Posts

I started in on this game on PS4 (trial version) several weeks ago and have struggled a little here and there with the obvious language barrier and lack of English info online. I know I know there are plenty of YouTube videos chronicling this game but I find it more difficult, more time consuming and less satisfying to sit and watch someone play for an hour and then repeat in my own playthrough.

So as i've been playing through the game i've been writing down what i've done so far so that friends/whomever might be interested will have an (somewhat rough) idea of what to do for the main storyline. So far I have the offline part and following the Elf story through creation of the character until I have the first key emblem.

I do not intend to create a complete players guide from this. It will not include crafting, chest/item locations, equipment/job/skill/party recommendations, quest info. What it will have is a no frills way to complete the main quests in order to advance the storyline.

What this is intended to do is help the non-Japanese speaking/reading player complete the main game with minimal confusion. With that said I will include English explanations of certain things which have essentially been 'figured out' by me based on trial and error, Google Translate and a 30 year knowledge of the series. It will not be a literal translation and any 'story notes' will be my own delightfully ham-fisted attempt to determine what I think is happening during cutscenes.

I guess the main reason for posting this is to ask if anyone is interested and if this would be useful to anyone.

If so I will consider keeping the format to something that makes sense to the random player and continue to take notes as I work through the story.

Eventually I may have something significant enough to post on Gamefaqs or the like.

Hi Dagron. It's definitely a good idea. In fact, I'm also thinking about writing an introduction on the dqx story, but I'm a little busy with my work recently. I have been playing this game for years. If you have any questions, I'm happy to help.

I'd totally use it. A guide for the basics (and a written one at that) would be most appreciated. I agree watching someone play can be rather time consuming and can also dull the sense of exploration and sense of personal experience.

Thanks i'll keep at my notes as I play through. I am admittedly not very far in the game or even very far into v1 (I still only have the first emblem) so I want to try to have something a little more complete before I start posting it.

Maybe I will try to complete v1 and see what I have, do some formatting, editing and error correction and then release the first part.

It'll be a companion to a good sense of exploration. In other words im happy to show you how I got through the main quests but finding chests, equipment/party selection, crafting, side quests, etc. you're on your own.

I would like to be able to access some of the secondary jobs though and I cant figure out the quests to unlock them. Namely Battlemaster, Paladin, Magic Warrior (armamentalist?), Ranger and Sage.

If someone can help me figure those out i'd be glad to add them to my writeup.

I will be including some side quests that are important to basic function of playthrough. So far ive written up the quest for changing occupations and the quest for hiring npc help from the tavern.

At this point I have the first 3 key emblems and it probably wont be long before I'm looking at the end of v1 (which im assuming is after I get 6 key emblems)

Once I finish v1 I'll proofread and upload what I have. 😏

BM: ジェイコフ in B1 of the Colosseum (娯楽島ラッカラン·コロシアム, the building near the casino). Take どくけしそう and めざめの花, and talk to the questgiver.

For the other jobs, I recommend you searching this website https://dragon-quest.jp/ten/

You will see the introduction on each job (including the unlock quest)

Thanks.. I've been through that website a few times already.

The problem for that quest is that I know I need to get a flower of some kind but the quest description online isn't specific on where to find it.

There's long been interest in creating English guides for the game, but the game is so large that it's a truly intimidating job to take up.

You know what might be good?  If the work gets split up and we had more than one person working on it.  Like say 1 person did Version 1, another person did Version 2, someone else did Version 3. etc.  I'm just thinking out loud here, but something like that would make it  so that it wasn't such a massive task for one person to take on.

Oh its a huge job to be sure. I'm sure that the job info, side quests, crafting info, etc. would be more work than a straight walkthrough. I don't really even know where I am (completion-wise) in v1. I imagine i'm probably 1/2 way (3 emblems down, 3 to go and whatever comes after getting 6 emblems)

I may stop altogether after v1. Its not terribly difficult work but being a dad and having a full-time job as well make it mostly a weekend affair for me.

Also I have never written any kind of guide before so simple things (like using the map grid to explain where a cave/town/exit are) seem to be popping up after parts have already been written, meaning I then have to go back to amend everything i've already done so it works.

And don't get me started on choosing content.. Part of the reason i've chosen to write a bare bones walkthrough is because (as Cran said..) there is just a TON of content. 🤯

Ok so I figured out the quest to unlock Battlemaster/Gladiator. Who knew that the flower is literally sold in the shop upstairs... That didnt take me half as long to figure out as it did for me to actually get the final blow on a Dead Pecker with those trial gauntlets...

I'd really like to add the unlock quests for each job to the guide but its going to take far too long. Frankly i'm not all that interested in some of the classes either. I usually lean heavily towards the physical jobs rather than the mage classes.

If someone wants to write up the job unlock quests that could be cool and a big contribution to the guide. I've already written up the one for Battlemaster/Gladiator.

Otherwise for a status update i'm working my way through the weddie 1st emblem (which will be my 4th)

Edit: I'm attaching the write-up I did for the BM/Glad unlock quest I mentioned. This gives an idea of the format i'm using (extreme informality) so you guys know what to expect from the guide and in case anyone wants to contribute to the job quest section.
