Ooh yeah! I forgot they re-used Battle for Glory too! I can't wait to hear that in symphonic from! That reminds me, I can't wait to see the symphonic form of the minigame music from the Zenithian Trilogy remakes on DS/Mobile. As far as I know that track was only ever used in those remakes which is why I remember being surprised by hearing it when I played the PC version of XI. I can't remember exactly which boss used it but I remember Sylvando being a major part of the story leading up to it so I'm guessing it was in early act 2 somewhere. That's another one of my favorite tracks and I don't think it's ever been done in symphonic form until probably this game.

This is the theme I'm referring to.

Hate to break it to you, but I doubt it will be in symphonic form. It’s never been recorded in a symphonic style and doesn’t exist on any of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphonic Suite CDs. It will more than likely be like Sylvando’s theme where it’s synth regardless of the music choice.

All the symphonic music is re-used from the TMSS CDs. So it’s more than likely going to be synth. I’d be surprised if it was symphonic.

After doing some more plowing through the story and doing more grinding, I managed to make it to Gondolia and get the Salty Stallion. Currently the levels are 24 (Hero, Erik), 22 (Veronica), 21 (Serena), and 18 (Sylvando). I haven't gotten much time to focus on grinding Sylvando's levels since I really wanted to get some more of the plot done today. However, I was doing a lot of forging- I managed to make a suit of iron armour, two iron cuirasses, and two iron helmets, eventually getting them all +3 with some reworking. Finally managed to get miracle slash on the hero, plan on doing some more with the swords skill tree until I finish it. Probably going to do some work in the Luminary line, of course, but if possible, I also want to invest in greatswords at some point. Almost everyone has a gold bracer +3 equipped at the moment, and I managed to get the cat suit for Veronica because I simply couldn't resist.

Stopped playing once I got to the Zwaardrust region, haven't gotten too much time to mess around with the ship, so once I get the chance I'm going to do that.

I’m now done with Octogonia and will head south to the ruins of Dundrasil tomorrow. Octogonia was my favorite town in the PS4 version and replaying through it reminded me why. I enjoy the tournament fights, the story of Vince, teaming up with Rab, and the town design.

Arachtagon’s boss fight went much better than my first playthrough as well. Serena’s ailment protection ability from her wand skill set was VERY helpful to prevent all the shenanigans Arachtagon can pull off. I’m hoping that ability will help with my “favorite,” boss when I reach Phnom Nonh.

Also, music wise, I got a little teary eyed when “With Sadness in Heart,” kicked in during the cutscene after the boss. Could be because of how well it fit the scene and how well the symphonic suite version sounds, or because it reminded me we didn’t get the symphonic soundtrack in the 3DS version of DQ7. Could be a little of column A, could be a little of column B.

Didn't get to play yesterday. But I managed to start Act 2. Only half done with the character stories but they seem to be pretty good so far. Though I will say that I don't think the PS4/PC players are really missing out on much with it.

I have to admit--I didn't make much progress this weekend. Why? Because I downloaded DQI, II and III and spent the weekend heavily playing DQIII. I have to admit--those character/monster models have grown on me. Dragon Quest III looks so great. Amazing--the entire Erdrick tetralogy under one roof on the Switch! And, since I, II, III and 2D mode of XI all have the same 2D engine, we're looking at all four Erdrick games having the same graphical engine! Nice and seamless! I love that. :)

Anyway, I DID make progress over the weekend on DQXI. After indulging in DQIII goodness for hours, I finally decided to switch back to DQXI and made it through the mini-medal academy (wow, best mini-medal location of the series, hands down!) and made it to the world inside the Mural.

I'm not sure if I'm underleveled, but I had a bit of a hard time with several enemies in the Mural World. The Luminary is up to level 26 at present. Is that too low? Also, the Giant Cannibox MURDERED four of my party members and forced me to swap several people out. Thankfully, Sylvando, Veronica and Jade bailed us out.

We made it through the crack and found the little girl. Once again, I warped back into the Mural World but went to bed before I could reach the boss.

I love the Mural World--reminds me of the Time Vortex from Dragon Quest VII.

Just curious--can someone tell me if I'm reaching the end of Act 1 any time soon? Just curious. I know Act 2 apparently involves something major but I'm merely curious if I'm anywhere near it as I'm anxious to see what this major development is.

Most recently, I've finished the Octogonia section and moved onto Puerto Valor.

Spoiler

Octogonia was initially my favorite section of the game up to that point. The DQIV references with the tournament and the music were really fun, but it had enough of a twist to feel different from that section. If anything, it reminded me a lot of Glitzville from Paper Mario: TTYD, especially with the ending moments of the chapter involving the competitors' power being drained. But Rab and Jade's mysterious behavior really added to the intrigue as well, and I greatly enjoyed the whole setting. The American accents were fun, and having a full city be "indoors" like that gave me a real Disney World vibe. In fact, many of the locations in this game give me that vibe.

Like in Gallopolis, I appreciate how there seems to be a recurring theme of redemption and forgiveness; both Prince Faris and Vince are, in a way, antagonists, but they also are sympathetic and you leave them on good terms. I look forward to seeing what else the game does with this idea; I'm starting to get a Jean Valjean/Javert feel from the Luminary's run from the law and the Helidorian guards' relentless pursuit.

Speaking of which, the Dundrasil sequence immediately after was a fantastic introduction to Rab and Jade. The use of DQV's music was on-point, particularly since it is very heavily associated with the loss of a parent. A couple moments got me a bit emotional--Rab's grief and survivor's guilt and Jade holding the Luminary close at the end of the action sequence. The storytelling is capable of some pretty powerful scenes, and it helps that the cutscenes are so well-produced.

Jade is...kind of amazing? It's refreshing to see such a physically capable female character that's also not constantly dropping sassy man-hating comments at every turn. She's very strong, but also poised, protective and respectful, and has potential to be one of my favorites.

So now I'm getting out into the open sea, ready for more adventures. Sounds like Lonalulu is next on my destination list.

Spoiler

Octagonia is one of my favorites too. Never considered the TTYD CH3 Parallels (absolutely love that chapter btw) and now when I get there I'm not going to help myself from seing that dude from the orphanage as Rawk Hawk. Can't remember his name atm but doesn't matter he's Rawk Hawk to me now.

Jade is pretty great but no one can top Alena for me.

Just had a ton of fun at the Casino. Had gotten just enough tokens to spin the 10 coin slots when suddenly I won 30 or 40 free silver spins and grabbed myself the bunny outfit recipes for Jade later and some Yggdrasil leaves. Tempting to go back for that spear though as I'm running spears on Serena this time and I always try to stack agility on my healers.

Is it just me or are there next to no Knife recipes in this game. I've been running knives this time on Erik and I like them so far but I'm still using a divine dagger because I don't like to buy equipment in this game and was hoping I'd come across a recipe for a better one.

Well alrighty kids we're playing Dragon Quest XI-S. Met up with Derk and I'm headed to the Manglegrove after playing a bit on lunch. Having it on Switch will be much better for me since I'll be able to play it on my lunch break and play in my comfy ass living room chair instead of stuffed up in my dark game room upstairs. I wish the resolution was a tad better or maybe the color better. I could barely see anything in Heliodor at night it looked like someone rubbed Vaseline on my screen.

You either need to go and buy/win a Butterfly Knife around Hotto, get the Batterfly Knife recipe in Octogonia, or get the Assassin’s Dagger in the cavern below Octogonia.

Just got to Octagonia, I'll see if I can't find that recipe anywhere.

More about tickington:

Spoiler

Just cleared the Aliahan Quest you get from warrior's rest. Was cute having to Save Ortega's marriage and Loved hearing the battle music from III again.

Thanks!

I'm excited as I keep hearing how they apparently did something major that this series hasn't really done before. I've been lucky enough to avoid the spoilers on it but everyone says I'll be revisiting the map again. I think I have an idea--I think it will be something similar to Dragon Quest VII.

I'm excited! :D

Not a stronger knife, but you can win Poison Needles off of the orange cactus enemies around Octogonia/the northeastern entrance to the Dundrasil region. They may not be stronger, but the guaranteed one damage can help Sylvando and Erik deal with metal slimes below Octogonia if you run into any.

Question about outfits.

In 3D apparently you can wear whatever armor and choose to look like something else, correct?

Is that then not a thing in 2D?

I am not sure if you can change it in 2D. But if you change it in 3D mode it will carry over to 2D.

Where in the menu is the setting to set appearance?

I haven't figured it out either. It might be 3d only

It's in the equipment menu. When you're viewing a character's equipment it's at the bottom beneath the accessories. I have noticed that dlc outfits do not seem to have 2D sprites as Hero and Erik return to normal costumes when I visit Tockington with the Trodain/Wolf outfits equipped, while other outfits like Veronica's catsuit do change her sprite.

Without spoiling anything I can tell you the end of Act 1 Takes place at Yggdrasil. When you head there you'll know something big is about to go down.

DLC outfits do work in 2d. Though not in cutscenes

Just got Jade and Rab on my team! Weird little thing I noticed is that the Red Orb doesn't actually appear in your inventory until after Dundrasil dispite getting it much earlier in the game at the King's Barrow. Im going to use spears on Jade this time (Man she gets thunder thrust really early compared to Serena!) so I'm going to head back to Puerto Valor and play some more slots until I can get the agility boosting spear for Serena and then hand down her previous spear to Jade. Once that's done I'm itching to check out the pastword I found near Dundrasil!

Isn’t the explanation at that point of the game for the red orb that Erik was holding onto it but then decided to have the hero carry it around instead?

I think that was exactly it.

Just did that last night & that's exactly it. Erik says something about how he almost sold it a few times but was glad he held on to it until that point.

It's not explicitly said that he gives it to you. Your party has a vision of the orbs and he just says something like "good thing I still have this".

One of these things is not like the other. 🤔

I’m surprised I remembered that exactly as it happened.
