Zelda not selling so hot doesn’t surprise me. Zelda isn’t exactly a big franchise in Japan, whereas it’s huge with the rest of the world. Plus with Link’s Awakening being a remake, that probably hurt sales too.

Ys IX...I don’t know. I don’t pay attention to sales numbers for Falcom. Obviously they do well enough for themselves if they’ve been around for this long.

It's like the mobile ports. Squeenix popped them out here.

Yeah, it definitely feels like they did the bare minimum effort to release them on Switch. I was hoping they would resemble DQ11’s 2D mode. Forgot this was Square Enix though and they like to take low effort routes.

True, but even for remakes/rereleases, those numbers are a tad low.  I believe DQ8 started at 500k, and ended at 880k.

It's probably more due to the lack of added content in terms of Japan than the West.  For us it's a lot more (2D mode, past DQ quests, new storylines).

I wonder what we'll see with the US NPD numbers.  US and EU are different from Japan.  Longer legs for any release.  Japan it's more like 60~80% up front, first two weeks, for us it's anywhere from 30~60%...or Minecraft/Half-Life/Doom, and like 1% first week.

I would still like this game to sell huge in NA and EU, though the Japanese launch sales are a bit lower than I’d expected. I wonder if they’re counting Loto Edition sales as game sales? Surely the Gorgeous and Dream Gorgeous bundles are included, but I wonder if they’re counting those console sales as game unit sales, too? I love mine, by the way. Unzipping the gorgeous case and seeing the Loto details every time I play feels like opening my favorite storybook or ancient magical tome. It never gets old, and adds a lot to the experience for me, not just of DQXI, but of owning a Switch.

I think a lot of the financial success of XI S likely comes from promotion and merchandising. I have already bought tea and cakes at Lawson, reserved at Square Enix Cafe primarily to buy more merchandise, and am still planning to buy the art book and more things as they release through the end of the year. DQXI S has created a wave of energy for marketing that likely eclipses its game sales. Even if a lot of “vanilla” buyers decide not to double (or triple) dip, they may buy more DQ and DQXI stuff right now, just riding the hype. For example, even if players loved DQXI, they never bought an art book because it won’t be published until next month. They never bought the full set of Bring Arts figures, because all of the characters still haven’t been produced. I’d be curious to know how well all the other merchandise is selling, though I’m not sure where to find that information.

Dengeki Online has revealed the sell-through rate for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition's launch in Japan.

The video game outlet reported that Dragon Quest XI S is doing well in Japan with 65% of its initial shipment or 311,384 units copies sold in its first week. This places it at the top of the gaming charts in Japan for the week, from September 23-29.

While the game has earned a top spot, sales has been comparatively low with respect to the previous releases of the game from the PS4 and the 3DS back in 2017, with sales reaching more than one million units during the first week.
