Remake Wishes - Dragon Quest IX S

Recommended Posts

You know it's coming, right? The next iteration of Dragon Quest Monsters is in the works with everyone's favorite spiky blue-haired protagonist & his sister, but then what? DQXII is a good year or two away from an announcement and years away from store shelves, so what's next?

Remake DQIX. Right? And what system? Maybe multi-platform, but definitely Switch.

So what do you want fixed or in it?

I'd prefer it get the Etrian Odyssey Untold treatment and a full party of 4 characters that talk and have set models and such. Other than that, modern DQVIII/DQXI graphics would be great!

Honestly I'd primarily just want sprite consistency. One of my biggest gripes about that game is how jarring it looks for NPCs to be 2D sprites while your character and field monsters are full 3d models. That and even more postgame content will serve me another million years.

Full WiFi multiplayer, not just local would be nice

True.  Just make everyone like DQ8 or DQ11 3D and that solves it all!

This is a game I'd make time to play with others!  The last time I really planned to do that was back during Fortune Street/Joker 2 days.

Having all of the quests available from the get-go without having to download DLC.

I'd rather have VI remade. The whole game looked more embitious to me. Having two full worlds to explore, the story was so good, and the characters were great too imo.

The DS version was great and all, but having it as gorgeous as DQXI (or at least DQVIII) would be THE dream.

Online, More customization, more story quests, add "real" party members while still alowing for character creation (you choose!), let me change/remove the protagonist from the party, more monsters per battle, give the world the XI treatment.

I do love monster battles with more than 3 or 4 monsters!

It would be cool if they added the Dragon Quest XI party members as guests at the inn. Also some other things include adding a casino or monster arena, extra legacy bosses from Dragon Quest X and XI, and it would be cool if you could recruit party members from other Dragon Quest games as some sort of post game content or something like that.

A Dragon Quest IX remake should look like DQXI Unreal and play like DQX. DQVC should be random or cycle based on system time rather than having to connect to internet. Multiplayer should be peer-to-peer over the internet without needing to connect to a server. The battle system should be active-turn based, like X, but retain the coup de grace / co-op de grace mechanics. Oh, and there should be an orchestral soundtrack regardless of region (and on every platform, if it goes multiplat). Though Sandy's theme sounds off in the Symphonic Suite, so maybe take that one from the Synthesizer Suite (which is actually different than the DS in-game music sequences).

With these changes, I would actually play the game.

EDIT: OH! The boat should dock anywhere along the shore like in old DQ games. Dunno why they've been so lazy about the boat lately.

As long as it has the included DLC, I would be fine with just about anything else.

It would be nice to play the game on anything other then a DS. I can't stand playing on them for long periods of time.

In IX it felt some weapons like whips and boomerangs, or some spells were completely useless. Why am I going to waste my mp on 2 guys?

Never used the casino much, but it does feel wrong when it's not there.

OMG! I forgot about the lack of casino.

Bring it back! I spend far too much time there, always love DQ casinos.

I don't think Square Enix will actually remake Dragon Quest IX in the coming years because I think they would rather remake Dragon Quest I - III using Dragon Quest XI's engine or a similar graphical style. The reason for this is because earlier, I recall a topic saying that they wanted to remake Dragon Quest III in the previously mentioned style but then said that they'd first work on Dragon Quest XII which, if the last game is a sign, is still a good few years away. However, a Dragon Quest IX remake for switch does have excellent potential.

Honestly as of now I'm fine with any of the games (that potentially need it) being remade, but would prefer a IX remake or a I - III remake, mainly IX. As for what I want for a IX remake...

~ More post game content. Got bored after beating the main story and ended up deleting my save file to replay the main game because the post game is just so...boring unless you have the DLC quests (I never could get them), and even then it still would be pretty boring.

~ Bringing the casino back. I for one love giving my characters Metal king swords and Gringham whips during the earlier (ish) portions of the game and brutally destroying everything in my path (cough cough what I did in DQ4, DQ5, and DQ6 cough).

~ I'd rather they just allow you to do the DLC quests from the start of post game instead of having you download it, but that's just because I'm still salty about DQ9's DLC.

~ Online and local multiplayer.

~ Giving weapons like the whip and boomerang and spells more use. I'll have you know that the whip and boomerang weapons were some of my favorites but I'm disappointed by the lack of usage for them and how useless they are at times.

~ Allowing you to recruit previous DQ characters as post content honestly sounds really epic, imo.

~ Idk, but I've always felt like they could've given at least a few more options when customizing characters? That might just be me, though.

~ Better graphic designs for NPCs in general. It's always irked me that NPCs have this generic, boring, and plain 2d sprites while your playable characters and *important* NPCs get 3d sprites (and even then some/most of them revert into a 2d sprite after their story is done). As much as I like both styles, there needs to be more consistency.

~ Might just be me, but I honestly wish they had a few more classes from previous games.

Although I wouldn't mind a DQ3 remake either, but I'd rather a IX remake. DQ3 is still on my 'to play list'

(not the topics subject, but if they were to remake DQ1, given the fact that it has only one character, I wouldn't mind it being an action RPG. Having a 1:1 world and castle and town, kinda like in DQXI, roaming through the map (which would of course be smaller than XI) and all.

It would feel maybe more... Convincing. Also, I wouldn't mind the game having less color/sunlight. I mean, Lordragon has stolen the Sphere of Light, which is basically Alefgard's sun. It'd give the game a more defined purpose, to bring the light back. And it'd be much "spookier" at night. Cause an actual day/night cycle, or just the game being always close to night would be great too.

II being played as a Kingdom Hearts, or DQ Heroes wouldn't be a bad choice either. Having the other two prince and princess as supportive characters would be neat. A good IA could make the game pretty fun imo. And having a world map akin to XI too!)

I’ve been trying to think of what to say for this topic, so I’ll just go with this:

All I want from a DQ9 remake is a game I enjoy from start to finish. I’ve never straight up quit a DQ game before, but something about DQ9 just rubs me the wrong way. Even when I first started playing it, it just didn’t really click with me, which is hard to believe for a DQ game! It’s the only mainline game I haven’t beaten (aside from DQ10 for obvious reasons), but I hope a remake would get me invested enough to at least finish the main game.

I jokingly pick on DQ9 at this point, but I honestly hope at some point if a remake happens I’ll get it and enjoy it.

True that.
At the end of the day that's all we can all hope for!

Full online and local wi-fi capabilities, natch. This game was the start of the MMO era.

On that note, special online servers dedicated to specifically Massively Multiplayer gameplay would be more than appropriate. They've been running DQX for years, they could easily pull it off.

More in-depth exploration of the lore. Zenus and Styrmling are in need of character resolution they never got in the original.

I'd refine the character party system; the requisite party members being wholly unimportant to the story is silly and wrecks the immersion whenever the game dances around it. A solution that comes to mind include providing character recruitment quests during the main game for plot-significant characters and locals (Ivor, Erinn, Wallace, etc.) with expanded backstory quests in the postgame.
