My Grandpa just called my Mom saying he's sorry, and he's in so much pain.

Please pray that we make it in time to see him.

I didn't get to see my Dad's Mom two years ago. And I didn't get to see my Mom's Mom last year. :(

During the tax free weekend I bought a brand new couch, my first piece of furniture that I’ve purchased for myself that wasn’t some cheap IKEA shelf or something. I also had to get rid of the couch I’d been using prior to this. It was a white couch, over 20 years old, and stained with every piece of food I ever ate on it for the first five years of my life, so the thing was in dreadful condition but it’s always a weird thing tossing out something that you’ve had for two decades.

Haha, that's the couch I'm sitting on right now. I guess I had some furniture with my ex wife, but really I moved out of that relationship with all hand-me-down stuff at age 30 & around age 32 I had a friend go out shopping all day one day with me to buy real adult stuff again. First purchase? A real couch. First time I invited my now wife over to my humble little apartment? The day the couch got delivered. So, it's both still comfortable, clean (all the 6 pillow pieces unzip and are washable, thanks kids and animals for trying), and a nice reminder of my 2nd chance at everything.

Congratulations!

Thank you. Frankly, I’m just glad I can actually nap on a couch in my own home now. The old one was only two cushions long and the arms had like no cushion to them.

Got Rare Replay for $10 during Best Buy’s Black Friday sale. That’s 30 games at about, what, $0.33 a game? None of which I’ve ever played. That should keep me busy in 2021 lol.

Rare Replay. Eal said the game in his post. 😘

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_Replay

Might as well tell you now that Rare did not make any turn based RPGs. They made stuff like Banjo-Kazooie.

Went to my Grandpa's memorial service.

Just got back from Texas, so we're having pizza and stuff for my birthday.

Mostly distracting myself with new games and stuff. Then, I'll probably clean the house

I poked my head into my local GameStop on Black Friday and it was totally and completely dead. No one but me and two employees. I was stunned to see how few used games were in the store. A used and new game store didn’t have used games. For the last year or two I had been using GameStop’s website to see if they had any used copies of harder to find Wii and Vita games at nearby stores and noticed all of a sudden so many games were no longer at stores and were even unavailable to order online. I figured, with all this in mind, that GameStop wouldn’t make it to 2022.

Then I get an email saying the local GameStop was closing and see an article that says they’ll be closing a couple hundred more stores than planned before the end of the year.

My local Gamestop is closed. There were two in nearby towns, but I think they closed, too. Lansing is doing fine, but all the other towns in the area are a no go. Game Hits is permanently shut down too. It was my other go to, since its basically a pawn shop that only deals in video games. They had Atari to the latest games, and even sold old memorabilia, like a poster for the SNES Final Fantasy 3.

On the other hand, I went to Disc Traders in Lansing yesterday, and they're going strong. SNES, GBC, GBA, WII U, Sega Genesis. I didn't look too much at the other sections, but they seemed to have some of the XBox and Playstation lines.

They also had Dragon Ball Z on VHS, so that was weird.

I haven't been to a Gamestop in a long time. But I know that one of them in Grand Rapids is doing well enough. But that store has always been more popular then the other locations to begin with. The one closest too me is not doing so well. They seem to have troubles keeping used games in stock.

I know I am being petty. But for how many times I got screwed over by Gamestop in the past I won't be missing them. Especially for how bad their online and over the phone customer support is.

there's going to be a huge mental health epidemic whenever this COVID stuff finally starts to subside in like a year or two at this rate who knows. Between taking care of my mom and work and the latter seemingly not very caring about the former I am reaching a limit myself.

You're 100% right about that. I've dealt with it by eating my way through any stress and I'm a good 30+ pounds over last Christmas weight. And I've had it FAR easier than most. And then my boss goes and offhandedly mentions we'll be wearing masks mandatory until NEXT Christmas vaccine or not because it's helped with scholl attendance ugh.

How was your scholl attendance? Did you skip English class a lot?

So, next Thanksgiving, even if the pandemic is under control, you'll still wear masks? Not sure I would predict something a year into the future like that.

Hopefully the vaccine is effective. Not sure how many people are going to try it, though.

Basically, with masks we've all but eliminated kids getting colds & flu. I've never had a class all semester with more than 1 or 2 kids out, and that was rare too. As a private school we could easily say no vaccine, no come to school, so this far out, it's very odd. I teach elementary school PreKindergarten to 5th grade. We've got 85-90% of kids coming to school daily, the rest doing online.

There's a huge mental health epidemic now and it's really been concerning.

I know people whose mental health is shot to all hell. They don't leave their house anymore because goony beard men and cat ladies on Twitter tell them everyone will kill them if they step outside. They now lead extremely sedentary lifestyles, putting them at risk for even more health problems.

Keeping balance has been tough, because you're fighting pure hysterical emotion. There's a lot of jealousy from people who are letting fear control their actions. Seeing them seethe at people living their lives, doing everyday things is... just sad. "LOOK AT THESE PEOPLE GOING TO STORES AND EATING AT RESTAURANTS!" You mean people doing things allowed by their local and state governments? Those monsters!

Using social media for news doesn't help. It's interesting how people don't question what they read anymore. A couple days ago I saw an article on Facebook from someone claiming she was being gaslit about the coof. Basically she doesn't leave the house and is mad because people are going on with their lives and she won't face reality. So I looked up the author and discovered she is severely mentally ill. It worries me when people pass this crap along thinking it's intelligent or authoritative. It's making things worse and it's not funny.

Last month I slipped and let it get to me. Mainstream and social media pressure stacked too high. It was all the regular stuff plus the implication that you'll murder your family for celebrating Thanksgiving. (By the way, a big middle finger to all the scumbag politicians who told people not to celebrate only to travel and party it up themselves!) Even though I've kept my exercise regiment, go out every day, and even take my daily personal project art break at Starbucks, the irrational part of my brain took over. Sometimes it's hard to drown out the noise. I'm definitely thankful for where I live, because that's certainly helped. Don't like seeing all the California license plates, though.

Edit!

I'm just gonna shout this out into the void!

Since I mentioned social media, I saw a lot of crap saying it's OK to not celebrate or spend time with people because there will be a next time. That's not always true. You can still be safe. Be healthy. Make good choices in life. Even get a test if you want the extra piece of mind. Don't let peer pressure, fear or guilt mongering take time away or stop you from being with those important to you.

I am hoping that at the end of this pandemic, mental health won't be so stigmatized as it is now. Our country is absolute trash when it comes mental health awareness.

I ended up helping a lot with that issue just by simply not using social media. I stick to a select few Discord servers and this forum and it helps out a lot. Especially if you have a lot of anti-mask and anti-vaxxer morons running in your family like I do.

As for being lonely from social distancing, it hasn't been much of an issue for me considering all my friends play online video games. So we meet up to relax and play games every other night or so. I also joined an online Dungeons and Dragons group to help out a lot with it as well. Considering that we have vaccines getting out, I don't see this pandemic being that much of an issue by the end of Spring. It is mostly the anti-vax morons to be worried about at that point.

The vaccine is something people have become so black and white on. Wanting to wait to take a new drug that was expedited doesn't make someone anti-vax. It's good to be cautious of what you put in your body. There are so many drug advertisements whose side effects take up most of the ad time. Most of the time the side effects sound worse than the condition. That's why it's good to do your research and talk to people who've taken it.

Personally, I've got a strong aversion to blood thinners due to the effects every single person I knew had that took them. Doesn't mean I don't believe in medicine or science.

I never said anything about being weary. I am strictly talking anti-vax.

But who are you going to trust more? Medical professionals who have years of knowledge and experience? Or some random person on the internet who has little knowledge on the subject. The testing is done, and the results are there. It has all been peer reviewed as well.

I don't understand. How does mandatory masking help with school attendance outside of a pandemic?

Trusting rumors is a bad idea definitely. I am concerned about possible long term side effects that haven't been recognized in the studies, though. I could see a hypothetical situation where vaccinating everyone and eliminating COVID and making the sacrifice of accepting harmful side effects as being the best option, thus allowing the vaccines to be cleared for use.

All the conspiracy theory claims out there are BS. When the times comes for me to get the vaccine, I'll almost certainly get it. But I won't lie, I'm glad I'm not one of the front liners who are required to be the first to get vaccinating.

But what do I know? For better or worse, all my fear of the virus disappeared after I recovered from it.

@AustNerevar my boss mentioned how few absences we've have this year. In the past few years we've had the entire 8th grade & the entire PreK sent home due to big flu outbreaks. She said we've had a record number of kids with perfect attendance, record fewest clinic visits, and other stupid number things. Ugh, I hate all the restrictions we have, but mainly because I'm out a boatload of money with my afterschool clubs. Normally I pack 24 kids in my clubs from multiple grades, this year I can barely get 10 kids daily & I can only have 1 or 2 grade levels together & have to keep everyone separate. Totally get it, but it hurts my bottom line. Bleh. If it's just masks, I'm fine, but the other stuff I hope can go away as soon as possible.

The only thing I am concerned about the vaccine is mostly the elderly who have pre-existing conditions. My mother who I take of has a lot of things going on. Once the vaccines are more widely available for her, we are going to consult every doctor she has to get more advice on it before advancing forward. I am not sure if I will get it right away or not. But I will consult my doctor as well. While the tests do seem positive, you are right on the long term effects not being known. Hopefully it won't be much if anything at all.
