The passing of Carroll Spinney was very sad to hear about this morning. I made an audible “gasp,” when I saw it, which doesn’t really happen. Maybe it’s because I’m just a big Muppets fan and/or because of the nostalgic connection to Sesame Street, but regardless, Carroll Spinney’s passing is really disheartening. He was one of my favorite Muppeteers along with Jerry Nelson, and Mr. Spinney did such a good job playing Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch over the years. You truly have to admire the man’s dedication to his craft for how long he played both characters/was part of Sesame Street.

The comics have always been on a sliding timescale, or, in the case with DC, rebooted altogether. As far as I’m aware there’s no storyline to explain because this hasn’t happened with Steve Trevor before. I can only imagine they either copied Captain America (frozen in ice and thawed out) or its some villain’s ploy and it’s not really him.

Between the holidays, renovations, preparing for March, and compiling stuff for the business I have been busy. Anyone here have experience with building kitchens? Not sure how much that would cost. A lot of stuff to go through.

Been sick for most of the week but today I was finally feeling like myself again. Had to call in sick on Tuesday and barely wanted to do anything. Thankfully this morning ol’ Yangus started feeling like himself again, and I managed to get a number of things taken care of today for the holiday season.

I also made a crockpot of my tortilla soup for Friday. My cousin who has been in the army for the last 5 years is on his way home right now and will finally be done with his service, so we’re having a big welcome back party for him this Friday. I was requested to make my soup, so made my soup I did! Looking forward to seeing my cousin since he’s been overseas in South Korea for nearly the entirety of 2019!

I got laid off of my job on Nov 11th due to a seasonal slowdown, and had my van go the great carlot in the sky about a week ago, and have been much depressed. I just got a job again, though, which I start at 10 am tomorrow, at a shop across the street, so that's cool. A 30-second on-foot commute is a-o-k with me.

All the same, I'm finding that as I near 40, my social life (which has been on life support basically all my life) is getting even more bitterly disappointing, which I didn't think was even possible. I want to have friends, but I don't know how to find other middle aged people into JRPGs and general Nintendo gaming, especially in the Conservative Midwestern Semi-City that I live in.

Consequently, isolation is starting to take its toll. Luckily, starting tomorrow, I have a job to go to, so that'll provide me at least some kind of diversion from staring into the 1280x720 LED TV abyss of existential dread. Also, having laundry money will be nice, my clothes are starting to get a little ... eh ...

Weird recommendation but the Bumble dating app also has the option to meet up with people looking for friends with mutual interests. It’s one of the top dating apps so it has a large pool of users.

We may have stopped with the Fantasy Football here at the Den, but I'm in a money league at work that I occasionally pay attention to. After 3 years of futility, last year I stumbled into 2nd place and $80, which covered my entry for those four years.  Almost dumped out this year as honestly it's ridiculously super competitive and I pay it minimal attention at best (as you'll see in a second).  My auto-drafted team did great this year, only slipping out of 1st place right before the playoffs.  Rolled through the first week and then yesterday happened.  I was matched up against a former employee that now sits in Colorado smoking a lot of weed and drinking a ton at a microbrewery that he owns.  Don't know how that happened to an English teacher, but whatever.  Dude makes a trade a week and is constantly adding people. Me?  I have mainly the same 11 guys, plus or minus 2 since the beginning of the year.

I have lots of Bucs (my favorite team) players, including their QB who broke his hand last week.  Decided not to start him because of the hand... and he scored 71 points on my bench :(  Here's how the week went though:

Thursday morning - I'm predicted to lose by ~20 points

Thursday night - A WR I have goes crazy and we're predicted by Yahoo to be 0.05 points away from each other

Sunday 12:57pm - I back out of a video chat with my dad to quickly play a RB that had been injured and out a couple weeks. Good thing I did

Sunday 2:20pm - My "injured" QB is having a record day on my bench :( but my team is doing well, predicted to win by ~20 points

Sunday 4:00pm - Early games end, I've got a comfortable lead, Yahoo puts my odds of winning at 70%. I turn off all TVs

Sunday 5:30pm - At the grocery store & check score, it's all good, still predicted to win by ~20

Sunday 7:00pm - I check the score and I'm CRUSHED. Some Arizona RB has scored 4 TDs and I'm getting slaughtered. Yahoo has me at 10% chance to win and there's maybe 10 minutes left. I curse myself for sitting the QB with the broken hand and lament my chance to win at least $80 for reaching the finals.

Monday 9:00am - I'm reading an NFL weekly recap and read how the QB I did start threw a TD with 2 seconds left and Philly's defense scored on a fumble recovery super-late to screw people betting in Vegas.  I load up my app to see how much I lost by.

Monday 9:03am - Screaming and yelling can be heard coming from my classroom. Those two things above and a few pointless catches by my TE  at the end of a game and I have won by 3 points!!!!!  I'm in the money!!!!  Better yet, had I not got knocked out of 1st place two weeks ago, the team I'd have played would have beaten me by 0.08 points!!!  Thank goodness for a well-timed loss and so many little things going right this week!!!!!!!!!  Totally going to quit the work league after this year, I put so little effort into it and after paying in $100 over 5 years, I'll have made more than I spent so $$$$$$ time to cash out.

Maybe we can get the gang back together for a Den league again next year.

My ex-wife did something like that after we broke up. Somehow got into hot air ballooning and diving with some similar service. We stayed in contact a bit for a couple years and she always was talking about how good it was to have used something like that.

I began my social media blackout phase last night. Apparently there's stuff from Star Wars leaking and even though this trilogy has sucked I don't want to know anything about the last film.

The Last Jedi was good change my mind.

I was just giving ya #$*!. What are some of your favorite moments?

lol I figured as much.

I really liked the scene in the throne room with Rey, Snoke, and Kylo Ren as well as the battle with the Praetorian Guard. Pretty much any scene with Kylo Ren is great, I think he’s one of the best characters in Star Wars. The part where we learn what Luke did to drive Kylo Ren towards the Dark Side. The theme of failure and rising up from it was great to me as well.

I actually saw it the day it came out, but I heard before going in that stuff with Luke was controversial, and I took that knowledge with me when I went to see it. The reveal of what Luke did to Kylo, if I remember correctly, was broken up into two parts: here’s what he did, and then here’s what he really did, the full context so it doesn’t seem as bad. So I was super confused when you find out that he backed out and he felt guilty about his moment of weakness, but that he thought about doing it at all was controversial.

I just wanted more with Luke. I wanted to see what this legendary character had been up to all this time. How had he increased his power? How had he evolved? I was just let down. And I get it, all the stuff that had happened made him the way he was and the way they

I’m quite glad they brought his character low. Just because he resisted temptation in Episode VI doesn’t me he can never be tempted again, and seeing that he gave into it is an interesting idea. He was just a normal guy, that was part of why people liked him, and giving him human weaknesses is just an extension of that. Me personally, I wouldn’t want to see Luke become some legendary hero that’s grown stronger and better and wiser. I wanna see him evolve as a person, not as a Jedi. This was a Luke we hadn’t seen (in the movies, I don’t read the books), and it made sense how he got there so I liked this interpretation of him:

I haven't been enamored with new Star Wars at all. I read probably 30-40 books in the Expanded Universe in the 90s and 00s. All that tossed = little interest and the new characters haven't resonated at all. From being back at a desert planet for most of 7 to the character of Kylo Ren at all, it's pretty much a pass of a series now for me. Glad others like it and no hate, but I'll stick to all my new Star Trek. Loving Discovery and can't wait for Picard. I think they went the right direction making those shows look like movie quality, while Star Wars went looking like it was filmed in the 70s still. It's kinda how I can't really do a lot of NES or SNES games anymore, I've become used to nice-looking things.

I don’t care about Star Wars either. Only ones I genuinely like are the original trilogy. No interest in trying to watch the prequel trilogy or all the new movies and shows they are doing for Star Wars. Honestly it seems like it’s getting run into the ground at this point. Nothing against those who like it though.

Star Wars isn’t really my favorite franchise either. I watched the Original Trilogy and liked them well enough. I grew up with the Prequels, so even though I know they’re bad, I get a touch of nostalgia watching them, especially Episode I. I liked both sequels but I had some problems with them, but the online discourse over Episode VIII has made it so I don’t even want to engage with that community at this point.

They should've stuck with just the original trilogy. If you want to make the prequels that's fine but the sequels aren't needed. Well...expect in the mind of Disney who decided they need a constant stream of money from making a new Star wars movie every year until the end of time. I'll love Star Wars until the day I die but I'll always prefer to watch an OT movie instead of the others.

By this perspective, the Expanded Universe media isn’t needed either. I’ll always be pro-good media, whether it is necessarily needed or not. I might question it’s existence but so long as it’s good I don’t care. Regardless, Disney paid 4 billion dollars for Star Wars, of course they’re gonna make more movies. I read they only just recouped the cost last year. I’m not defending the cynical business decisions of a mega-corp that owns 35% of the entire movie industry, I’m just saying it’s to be expected from a mega-corp that owns 35% of the movie industry.

I got an email from Nintendo telling me I can check my Switch stats for the year. Figured why not look at them, and this is what I ended up with for most played games (not shown is Super Mario Odyssey at #4):

Second, my play hours in total for my Switch this year...holy #$*!. Not even gonna post that picture. 😳

I don’t know how it ended up so high, but I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth out of my Switch ever since I bought it at the end of June this year. It’s certainly been great having a high quality Nintendo console again, and despite being 2 years late to the Switch party its been fun.

Non-gaming wise, I’m almost done with all my Christmas stuff. Got the homemade chocolates all boxed up and ready to go for my co-workers and friends, have most of my gifts and will wrap them up this weekend (provided the last few arrive by then), and got my Secret Santa gift for work ready.

Only one more week till Christmas! Can’t wait for that. I love Christmas, and can’t wait to finally give these Christmas gifts away.
