Dragon Quest executive producer Yu Miyake recently worked as the producer of Dragon Quest XI, but he's been thinking of ways to bring the DS RPG Dragon Quest IX to smartphones. [Thanks, Gamestalk.]

During the recent Super Dragon Quest X TV Fall Festival 10-Hour Special 2018 broadcast, Yu Miyake mentioned that the problem they had in bringing Dragon Quest IX to smartphones was due to the difficulty of reproducing the StreetPass feature, which was a big hit in the original version.

However, thanks to recent advancements and some new useful tools, he is now "beginning to see the possibilities" of developing Dragon Quest IX on smartphones.

He also added that it would be difficult to make it exactly like the original StreetPass feature, so it wouldn't be anything like what we've seen on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. However, Miyake says he's aiming to come up with a way to offer a similar experience, and that he's "beginning to see the possibilities of what they can do."

Again, he mentioned that Square Enix has bolstered their Dragon Quest series lineup on smartphone, and Dragon Quest IX is one he definitely hopes to release for it.

Dragon Quest IX originally released in Japan in July 2009 for the Nintendo DS. It released in the West in July of 2010.

According to the article, Tag mode will be downgraded to a special-App-related mode.

This may affect several systems including Grotto - what hardcore players collect & enjoy.

But even if it doesn't change, the game program may have something different - the random seed used by Chest Timer may be changed and the wandering monster bug may be fixed.

The Grotto features are seriously relying on these two things. If the Chest Timer changes, then Soma/Ethereal/Millionare maps are all not working. If the wandering monster bug gets fixed, then MKS LMS GS only maps are all becoming useless.

I wish the remake can keep every feature the same .....

Oh yeah, without a doubt the game-seeds would change. Grottos (if they are still in the game at all) would not have their signature special-glitches, because the glitch for an all-MKS floor (for example) is dependent upon a limitation specific to the DS and how it interprets (and in special cases sometimes overwrites) encounter tables in DQIX. So basically if a grotto meets a number of criteria it can end up overwriting the encounter table on a specific floor with the first monster on the list, which for certain difficult depths can end up being a LMS, an MKS or a Gem Slime. But this is all dependent upon how the DS interacts with DQIX's software. Meaning that even if they made a 3DS remake of the game it is highly likely that this glitch would not be the same.

I have mixed feelings about a remake of this game. It would potentially fix a lot that's broken with the original (like unsupported DLC-locked local game content) but it would potentially remove a lot that's good about it, too.

You think they'll bring Dragon Quest 7 to America? I've seen footage for the mobile version and it's awesome almost an exact replica except random encounters, which I preferred anyway.

Grotto meat is the best meat. Like fliet, only slimier.

No.

Probably not DQVII, just because it's a lot to localize (or potentially migrate from the 3DS version) and I don't think DQVII sold as well as they'd expected in the US, even considering the fan outcry for the western release.

It would be nice to be able to play DQIX with up to 3 friends over the internet on a mobile device. Most DQIX players missed in the west missed out on the multiplayer, so it would allow a lot of players new and old to experience it for the first time. Also, most players consider the story subpar compared to other releases, so it would be nice to retain and enhance the multiplayer feature that makes this game stand out beyond the story. DQIX is the most flexible in the series for character building (skills, full-cosplay, class-based spells and abilities) and multiplayer. The fact that it's not like DQVI (which has God-like characters who can master every class and retain every spell and ability) makes it more interesting because it forces players into specific roles in a multiplayer battle, to make them more vital to the team. "Do we have a Priest with Omniheal?" "Do the Gladiators have both a defense-dropping Stardust-family and Falcon Blade types of swords?" "Should we have a Paladin to Knight Watch coup / Forbearance combo, to protect the party, for this legacy boss?" etc.

That depends on whether the limitation is hardcoded into the game code as a result of the DS hardware, or if it's just the DS hardware limiting the code.  It's actually not clear which it is.  So if it's programming due to intentional system limitations, the seeds might remain the same if they decide not to touch that given the amount of time it would take to properly test it on new hardware.

I don't know. We would have to see how much of the game code they would actually keep or update for a remake.
