A Lovely Letter help

Recommended Posts

Spoilers obviously.

I'm at the second patt of the quest where the girl wants you to take a letter back to her brother, however when I go back to the western checkpoint, he isn't there. Did he move from where I saw him the first time?

Hmm.  Everyplace I've checked indicates just return the letter to the brother.  No indication he's moved.  One even states back at the checkpoint.

Maybe you have to progress a bit more forward in the storyline?  Like the next cutscene, or it's a day/night element?

Just about to that part. Stuck on the previous one trying to get the damn people to all Pep at the time to beat that Spitefire. Annoying.

Its definitely not a day/night thing as I waited around to make sure of that.

Super dumb quest. Best suggestion I can offer is to ignore it until all 3 randomly Pep during normal gameplay, then zoom to Gallopolis after the battle to take on a Spitzfire. I initially tried pepping all 3 up during the spitzfire fight itself, and learned the hard way that it has a full-party knockdown. Serena's pep ran out while Erik was down, and I about threw my controller across the room <_<

Yeah, you absolutely have to grind for pep before taking on the Spitzfire.

As an aside I loved those monsters. Cool design, and I could 1 hit them with Erik if they were asleep. He's got a skill that does 6X damage to sleeping enemies and if I got off a Sap round 1 while everyone defended, he'd kill it first shot round 2.

Try waiting until you get the 5th party member, that's what I did after fiddling with it for an hour or two.  When a character gets Pep and is put in the backline it stays until they actually take turns in battle, makes it much easier.

Weird, he should still be at that checkpoint IIRC.  Have you tried going at different times of day?

I did do that. He isn't there at night or in the day.

You know I really don't remember if I went back before or after the next story event, maybe try doing the next event and going back afterwards.

I did that one by everyone just defending every round, eventually the whole party had it at once. I do like the move them to 2nd team trick, will keep that in mind in case any other quests come up like this.

Yeah. I guess I was caught up in some story event trickery. After I got tbe boat I went back there and the soldier was where he was supposed to be.

So, here's the thing about "The Lovely Letter," and timing:

1) If you first enter the city, and head to the West side in the daytime, and meet with Hakim's sister Akia there, after she gives her letter of correspondence, the text indicates you can take it to her brother now, as it says nothing special after she hands it to you.

2) If you first went to the docks that triggers the cutscene that leads to the manse of the ruler of Gondolia, then meet with Akia to trigger part 2 of the letter quest, it says, "When you have time, you should go and deliver Akia's letter to her brother Hakim at the checkpoint west of Gallopolis."

Meaning the last line indicates whether the quest can be completed immediately or the events in Gondolia have to continue to their natural end.

===

Kind of like how there are 5 different ways to move the guard to the upper area of Heliopolis.

Yep, not present prior to triggering the Birdsong Nectar quest (lol, christ I think this is the 20th or 21st reference to an older DQ game...just sooooo many), but present after at the checkpoint.  So the story triggers do seem to impact certain quests anyway (at least the first letter correspondence quest).

What game was the birdsong nectar originally from? I knew it had to be a reference since I recognized the name immediately  but couldn’t remember which game. Is it from VI?

IV. Alena's chapter.

Oh yeah, it’s what you get at the top of the tower where the two elves are, isn’t it? You get up there, the two sisters talk, but then disappear after seeing Alena’s party.

Man, it’s been too long since I’ve played through DQ4.

Yep, it's from 4.  On top of that, they even have a bard as the first NPC to mention it (at the Northern-most end of Gondolia).  Who is also incidentally in the center of the map at the highest point, though by highest the most northern here, while he's at the top of the center building in the village next door to Alena's hometown, on the balcony on the top floor.

It's kind of interesting the parallels.  I really should have made a list.  At some point I'll do a replay and just look for the throwbacks/homages.

Oh right, even in the books, you have a storyline of the greatest smith in Hotto who goes on a journey to find the secrets to Mini Medals, which is both a throwback to the greatest smith from Jipang who went missing (found in the Dark World, Alefgard), and the first book storyline of a man who went in search of Mini Medals in DQ7, the first book series really (and this is also the first book series in this game).

It's kind of cool the small details.

This was one I caught. There are some excellent little details scattered in this game, especially for fans who’ve played most of the games.

Heck, even fans of the spin-offs get some love thanks to Dragon Quest Monsters music being used in the casino when playing Slime Quest.

It’s not a lot of music (at least from what I’ve heard in game myself) but they do use the Monster Trainer battle theme from the Joker games when fighting a boss. The music changes every time the background changes in Slime Quest, so there could be more I don’t know of.

The other songs in Slime Quest may be from Slime MoriMori 3 and/or other spin offs, but I’m not sure. It’s DQ music I haven’t heard before, and it’s not featured in the symphonic suite for XI so it must be from another game(s).
