Dragon Quest XI Review Thread

Recommended Posts

It would be 92 without the 60 and 70 scores.  70 should not count given its import but whatever, over all great reviews or very fair from non fans and non jrpg fans.

It’s funny because I first remembered the embargo was lifted today after someone posted Polygon’s review on a gaming subreddit just to rip on it.

Having read through it’s pretty clear the reviewer wasn’t reviewing it as a JRPG. He refers to pressing a button during cutscene dialogue as basically being “quick-time events” instead of making it feel cinematic. There’s a part where he complains about how you can’t alter your party members’ stats (or your “squad” as he refers to them as). He expresses disappointment that you can move your party around during battle but that they didn’t use that opportunity to include a cover or dodge mechanic. It’s like he’s upset that he played a game that’s a part of its genre and wanted it to be something else.

This reminds me of those Persona 5 topics on GameFAQs made by people who clearly didn't do their research before buying a game from a genre they're not familiar with.

The 60 point review mentions pep state being rare...yet its not from every Japanese vid I've seen.

Rate boosts in the skill tree and from armour.  Then items that grant it automatically to individuals and the party.  Also seems like dq9 coup de grace in that if someone has it triggered it boosts the chance of others.  Plus if no is lowered it definitely seems to pop up more often.

Hell even in the various demo and the times Michi showcased gameplay it popped often.

Plus dismissing skills and spells without context as though the presence adds nothing to gameplay...yet somehow FF and Persona does?  Kind of broad and lazy.  Coloured by likely not enjoying battle flow.

IGN’s review actually complains about bunny girls and puff puffs lmaoooo. He says “what do bunny girls add to the Dragon Quest experience?” What a moron.

Kotaku says it’s the best in the series. That’s a bold claim.

If that snowflake really wants to be offended, he should get his ass over to Pornhub and search Dragon Quest.

Uhm, I know this because...uhm...oh, alright, I guess its better for one to be a snowflake than a dirty old man.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion... Not going to mock the 60/70-reviewers. If they have negatives like "I find bunny girls awkward/uncomfortable" and "this free-movement battle thing should have cover and dodge-mechanics" a reasonable person can just say "Ooh, that doesn't bother me in the slightest" and go on with buying the game if they're interested. I'm guessing most people nowadays check multiple reviews anyways if they bother with looking at reviews to begin with

Edit for clarification: a reasonable person -> a person who is interested in buying this game and is checking online for information and can make judgements for him/herself. Not trying to imply the reviewer is unreasonable

So what do Bunny Girls and Puff Puff bring to the Dragon Quest experience, again?

Its a series tradition. It’d be like taking cardboard boxes out of Metal Gear. I’d also argue it’s stylistic. I pretty much see bunny girls as being the DQ universe equivalent of a waitress so they’re being consistent. Also in a medieval fantasy world you can’t expect sleazy stuff to not be operating in the background of the cities.

Petty is being petty. Otherwise a decent review. Ignore the empty virtue signaling and leave the pearl clutching in ResetEra.

ETA: Also hope his DQ panel at PAX goes well and congrats on being one of the few journalists whose Twitter isn't a nightmare to read.

Bunny Girls I can take or leave, but Puff Puff in 3D is bizarre. In 2D it was abstract and harmless. That thing in VIII where they like... put his head between two slimes... I don't need to see that.

If slimes feel like boobs, and a boob feels like a bag of sand, do slimes feel like a bag of sand???

The 40-Year Old Virgin isn’t to my tastes.

I used to watch the Benny Hill Show with my parents, and when I was about 8 once with my grandmother.

Kinda hard to care about Bunny Girls after watching that.

It is a little irritating that somebody would review a DQ game and then complain about bunny girls. At least attempt to understand the franchise that you're reviewing.
