I’ve been genuinely surprised how well Octopath Traveller is doing. For one it’s awesome to see the game is doing so well, but I didn’t expect it to be doing this well. I suppose it’s a combination of

Not yet. Lots of people are asking interesting questions and I'm looking forward to compiling them!   For the record... We aren't going to shy away from 3DS/Switch questions entirely.

The questions video is finally here.

Can someone ask them if the law preventing them from releasing the games on workdays is real? I really want to know :)

Jokes aside, i hope they pick nice and varied questions. Enough with the same questions we get everytime someone interviews Horii.

In case you were actually wondering, Horii-san was recently interviewed about this: http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/03/28/how-dragon-quest-spawned-an-urban-myth

Also, these questions aren't for Horii-san! They're for the dev team, like the director and producer and others. I will be doing my best to pick the most interesting questions, and we've already gotten quite a few good ones. (Also yes, I'm the one the e-mail goes to...)

Liamland said on Facebook he'd predict 89% of the questions were "why no 3DS". Is he accurate?

Sadly nothing I would ask is going to be answered, as it would pertain to very specific gameplay instances.  Ones they wouldn't know off-hand and would have to look up.

Or related to the Switch.  Specifically the 3DS content question and the obvious question why the game announcement was postponed from October, when you guys clearly were initially prepared to make the reveal the day after Nintendo's October Direct, the postponement until March 28th, and whether the 3DS was initially slated to see a release here and the Switch was almost ready to go as a pure PS4 port, and what specific decisions went into the clear postponement of the Switch and the obvious change of mind on the 3DS.

Why the Switch went from a 7~11 month port cycle (should have taken 9 months, and been released in February/March in Japan if it were a straight port), to a full development cycle, and what's really being planned for it, because for that level of development, there's a lot of room to make it into one hell of an amazing port with it's own content...and we all know DQ nostalgia sells in Japan well, and the recent trends in the West suggest old-school 2D or 2D-esque or just SNES/PSX style graphics and general gameplay are becoming a thing now.

Probably more like 93%.

Not yet. :) Lots of people are asking interesting questions and I'm looking forward to compiling them!

For the record...

We aren't going to shy away from 3DS/Switch questions entirely. I just don't want anyone to expect a different final answer than "3DS isn't coming" and "Switch is still a ways off" because there isn't anything else to say yet on the latter. Good, concise questions would be considered for sure. Why anyone thinks major Switch news would be revealed in something like this (or our Horii livestream) rather than a proper announcement/press release is confusing to me, though!

In all fairness, Horii accidentally spilled the beans in (I think) France when the translator said the DQ7 was coming Westward, so maybe they're hoping for that kind of unscripted surprise.

By the way, how's Healix?

How about we ask “Why didn’t Square Enix just let Nintendo handle the 3DS version of DQ11 since Nintendo had to handle Dragon Quest VII and VIII 3DS for Square Enix?”

Yup! How much clout do you have at work? If your boss gave the ok, it'd be great for a cameo to appear on our newsfeeds!

How often does Nintendo localize and publish a game that another company is also localizing and publishing on other platforms?

That's precisely what I mean though.  The Switch is being intentionally downplayed for the purpose of assuring initial maximum sales for the PS4/PC, and for the purpose of a wow factor when it can be officially unveiled.

So while I would want to know, there is no potential way such info would pop up, and I believe the 3DS decision to be tied directly to the Switch postponement and so will not be answered as it would likely reveal what I'm about 99.9% positive is true about the Switch: it will have 3DS content of some type in some form.  I don't see this being something that can or will be answered in anyway satisfactorily.

That is a good question.  I think I'll pose it myself, and hope a lot more people do the same.

Thank you.

For the record, I’m not trying to be a dick by bringing up that question. I’m just genuinely curious why Square Enix isn’t following suit to what happened with Bravely Default, Second, DQ7 3DS, and DQ8 3DS. It seemed to work totally fine for those four games, so why not do it once more with DQ11 3DS?

I’m more than happy we’re getting the PS4 version, but...well, I just find it odd.

Horii did that for very specific reasons.  There wasn't any need to hide the information, and it actually benefited the fanbase and generated real buzz for the release that was likely more buzz than Nintendo was able to generate in their endeavours (youtube videos mean nothing if they don't show up in your feed).

In this case I'm fairly confident that won't happen for the same reason: sales generation.  Though in the other direction.  People holding off on the PS4 and PC for the Switch release.  It would make more sense financially to allow the Switch to be seen as a generic simple port that SE just has to take extra time to develop due to "lack of experience," so the PS4 and PC are seen as the more desirable versions now, so they can showcase the Switch after the PS4/PC to wow people and give 3DS diehards a reason to go Switch, PS4 people something unique that lends an extra Switch copy a worthwhile purchase, and PC people a chance to rethink about portable DQ11 for the same reason as the PS4 crowd...unique elements specific to the Switch that render it a whole new thing.

It's not a dickish question.  Nintendo took over the helm of DQ's 9, 6, Joker 2, 7 3DS, and 8 3DS.  So it's a perfectly legitimate question.  Even if it's released under the radar, the very fact it carries the same name as the PS4 and PC versions will help generate sales on its own, without Nintendo having to spend any extra legwork on marketing...though likely they would, and by benefit of that marketing, the PS4 and PC versions would also benefit.  ESPECIALLY given the success of Bravely Default (which was marketed), Bravely Second (which was also marketed), and 3rd time's a charm with Octopath Traveler (which was...also marketed).  Old-school turn-based RPG games are making a comeback and games with that retro flavour are actually bankable now.

3DS sales would canibalize the Switch and PS4’s sales if Nintendo published it instead of Square Enix and they would make less money from it.

I’m almost certain.

Now that you guys bring up Healix, doesnt the japanese DQ twitter account use a healslime as its mascot? Maybe Healix can get back ;)

@Michi i was joking precisely due to that article and some gaming outlets mentioning that story on their DQXI preview articles, haha.

I was fully expecting the questions to be for the producers, director and the three main creators. Would be nice to be able to ask Sugiyama and Toriyama their favorite games in the series.
