Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Recommended Posts

Is anyone going to be picking this up? Watched some videos of gameplay from people who got it early, it looks really good.

I didn't play the previous two, so I hope this one stands on its own mostly.

I am! I loved the first one but was a bit disappointed with X. From what I've read 2 is a lot more like 1 so that's good news.

It's a pass from me. Xenoblade 1 was fun for awhile, but once I reached the top of the Bionis where the winged headed people live, I lost interest.

I wasn't a fan of the over abundance of side quests either. I ended up skipping so many of them.

Edit: To clarify, I do think Xenoblade 2 looks fun, especially for those who've enjoyed the previous games. It's just not a game I want to invest in since I didn't get hooked on Xenoblade Chronicles 1. Maybe if there's ever a sale or demo I'll look into it, see if it sparks interest.

This sums it up for me. I think we lost interest at about the same point in the game.
It's too bad because I really did like the game. There was just way too much work in it for me. Playing a game shouldn't be work.

Xenoblade 2 looks terrible though. It's not that I mind video games looking super Japanese and anime-like (I mean, obviously...), but I think the character designs look insanely dumb and emotionless, to the point where it could easily ruin the game for me. Not a fan of the oversexualised female lead either, I'm not a "new wave feminist" or anything, but I feel like it gives the game an absurdly immature tone, that doesn't fit the series at all.

I'm hardly the only one who's been objecting to those points anyway, so I guess there's no reason to keep going on about it, and lo and behold, according to firsthand impressions, the game is supposedly amazingly good. I'll probably end up getting it some time...

They wanna re-release XBCX on Switch. Look, I get it, but that leaves like two games on the Wii U that you can't play anywhere else. Honestly, the idea of playing that game mobile sounds like a total nightmare.

My husband and I picked this up launch day, or more to the point, _I_ picked it up _for_ him as an early holiday gift. It was on his wishlist, and the release date ambushed us, so rather than try to go behind his back about it, I decided to treat us to it.

My initial thoughts?  It might be heavy on tutorial text, and short on actual explanation, but the game's moderately steep opening learning curve gives way to quirky JRPG characters with charming voices.  I'm using the English dub, so Rex is from the north of England ("LOTS of planets have a north", and extra kudos to anyone who can place that quote).

I like my cheesy, scantily dressed anime babes from time to time, but even I'm thinking Pyra should've had the Blade equivalent of a reduction surgery.  Her boobs are each bigger than her head!

My favorite character so far is Nia's Blade, Dromarch.  He's like White Blaze from Samurai Troopers, 'cept he can talk.  That rocks!

More thoughts later on! Got house stuff to do.

I don't recall a lot of that stuff being in Etrian Odyssey V.

Yeah, I know, I've been bad about that.  Truth is, I fell off the Etrian wagon for a while, not because of the game itself, but because of some personal crap that depressed me pretty much half of November.  I'll get back to it soon.  I can address my drama from last month in private messages to interested parties.  Just PM me with the request. This goes for anyone reading the thread, too.

I hope everything gets better, Zahan! :)

I thought I'd already commented here, but I haven't, so here I am! Haven't picked up Xenoblade 2 yet since I've had a busy few days, but I'm hoping to do so within the next few days! I loved what I played of Xenoblade X, and from what others have told me, Xenoblade 2 (and 1) fix the things I didn't like about X (meh story and soundtrack overall were my biggest issues) so I'm really excited!

I get ya. Depression zaps my interest to play games too. It's like, you NEED to do something to distract yourself, but just can't muster the will to do it and it creates a cycle. Anyway, I hope you're doing better.

Thank you all for the kind words, and yes things have gotten better.  I dont' want to hijack the topic though.  I can keep the details to PM if anyone wants.

So I'm still in Gormott, so far, working on a ship, to get elsewhere, and I still enjoy the game, but wish the harder, above-my-pay-grade enemies wouldn't be quite so agressive towards me when getting from a to b...

On a slightly unrelated note, did anyone see the debacle about the ice bunny girl? There was a thread on twitter where a lesbian porn actress chimed in with the support of the design. I love the internet.

Okay... just looked into this character upon hearing this.

Here I was complaining that Pyra is overexaggerated, then in struts Dahlia. Wow.  She doesn't turn heads, so much as put eyes out. Seriously.  Ice powers plus that huge bosom means watch where she walks.  She's gotta have glass cutters for nipples!

Full disclosure, I'm actually a bi furry fan, and I like my anime ladies, but Dahlia is pushing things with that bust.  It's not sexy, it's more laughable really.  Like the character designers thought this was the way to sell the game or something.  Give me SOME reasonability in those fantasy figures!

Hopefully my post didn't cross the TMI line on my interests, but I gotta be honest here, I might've liked Dahlia better had she not been so absurdly proportioned.

In other news, I DID pick up two Rare Blades tonight. Rex now has Perceval and Kora.  Now Kora is a well proportioned character.  Not outrageously oversexed or overdeveloped.  Just a bit sultry, but not too.  Perceval is an awesome hard-drinkin' swordsman, and that rocks too, in a way.  I also hope desperately to unlock one certain Rare Blade that I dare not mention for spoilers' sake.

So this game is awesome! I've really been enjoying myself, even more than I expected! Definitely hasn't disappointed in any of the areas I felt X was lacking.

To make the topic of Blades less controversial, what are everyone's favorite Rare Blades so far? My favorite that I've encountered so far is Finch!

Current party is Rex, Nia, and the character you get at the end of Chapter 4; I'll leave them unnamed to avoid spoilers. Wasn't sure if I was going to swap out Tora for them, but I tried to get a Rare Blade and managed to get Finch, who is apparently one of the best Tank blades in the game. It was better than Tora's, so I swapped him out. :P

I've only got Perceval, Kora, and Miu so far.  There's a spoileriffic Rare Blade I look forward to hopefully finding, otherwise, no clear favorite yet.

If I get the game, I hope I come across Kos-Mos. It's pretty cool the team put her in as one of the blades you can obtain, and while I've not played the game she originally is from, Kos-Mos is a character I'm aware of and am glad she was included.

That was the one I was consciously not mentioning, but yes, I am hoping to get her on my roster as well.  I have Kora and Perceval on Rex, and Nim and Azami on Nia.

The developers revealed her right before the game launched, so it's not that much of a spoiler.

Normally wouldn't link to Kotaku, but here you go.

True, and I had observed that fact as well, but anyway, I feel much better now that her existence is on the board so I can mention it. I don't care how much or little sense it makes for her to be in this game, I want KOS-MOS on my roster. :D

Updating my list of Rare Blades, I got the Wind Ball-type Boreas today in the middle of adventuring through Uraya.

The thing about the sidequests in Xenoblade, is that if you only do a handful (certain ones that grant you some good gear and Colony 6), it's fun and not overbearing.  If you do about 30~80% of them, it's frustrating and annoying, and people tend to feel as you do (myself included).  However, as many players have reported, and I have personally experienced, doing nearly all of them, like 81+% changes the experience entirely.  I'm not sure why, but it really begins to feel like the sidequests were an aspect of the immersion, in a way...like a runner's high.

It's an odd flip where I've yet to find anyone who has gone that far into the sidequests, continue to find complaint and not change their mind about the nature of how they're implemented.

That said, they should have offered more story related sidequests, and the handling felt a bit more like DQ9's approach.  It's something Japanese developers haven't gotten the hang of.  Either you get FF10 and 12 style sidequests, that deeply immerse you into the lore, and the FF10 and DQ 3~8 sidequests that are a diversion, but fun and not a complete distraction or feel overbearing and a burden, OR...OR you get DQ9 and Xenoblade style sidequest systems that are simplified MMO sidequests, and even if the purpose itself is well designed, and the manner of the quests is well designed, the execution and system upon which you manage the quests feels...alien or like it's not part of the game, like it's separate, even when it's story oriented.  You have to look beyond the GUI and funny music/stamps/etc. that signify a completion.

---

Oh right, the topic.

Ahem, if it weren't apparently obvious, being a Takahashi nerd.  Yes, I will be buying this game, and eventually get a Switch to play it.  I'm just sad I had to skip out on pre-ordering it because I was too busy with helping my mum move and find a new house to have time to scrounge the money for it on top of what I saved up for, and to assure I could snag the special edition release...which bugs me, but there's bound to be a few copies left when I'm able to, though I may just get the basic version due to likely massive upcharges.

At Chapter 6. As someone who preferred X to 1, I think Xenoblade 2 might be my favorite in the series all things considered. The pacing, level design, narrative, gameplay systems all feel top notch. I think its the most refined game in the series to be honest, nothing really feels extraneous.

The gacha blade system is kinda wearing thin on me. Tying what is probably the most integral system in the game to rng isn't great. I feel I've put in a lot of investment for little returns in the form of unique blades.

On Chapter 8 now. That ending to Chapter 7, just wow... It was an extremely cathartic end to a very interesting chapter. From what little I've played of Chapter 8, it's going to be even better. I love the new setting. Overall, the game hasn't had any dull spots so far which can't be said for Xenoblade 1 where things got a bit less interesting when you reached Mechonis.

How many chapters are there in Xeno 2? Sounds like you're getting towards the end of the game.
