With DQ11 having come out today, I figured we needed a thread for us to share our gameplay.

I pre-ordered the 3DS download version so that I could play the game as soon as the clock hit midnight in Japan. I happened to have the day off so I have been playing since it came out (except now the 3DS needs to charge). I decided to not use a DQ1 or DQ2 spell code for my first playthroughh since it seems kind of like cheating. At 3 house I have finally made it to the opening animation. For now I have chosen the 3D version, the mix of the two was really nice for getting a good view of the map.

The spell for where I am in the game now is:

あけじ らどべ にちぎと ぐらじ げやお ゆ

I have seen various gameplay footage and it looks like Homer, one of the two generals pursing XI's Hero, uses devious underhanded tactics to defeat him, like tying up Camus before the 1st fight with him, and summoning a Tentacular (Even though we haven't seen it in X yet) to wreck the getaway ship. Plus he uses Zam spells, and that, along with the stuff I've mentioned, kinda foreshadows that he's the underhanded of the two Declore generals and XI's demon lord underling or the demon lord himself, just human and kinda like Kefka, in the fact that both try to hunt down the main protagonists, and use dirty methods to try win battles, contrasting their more honorable comrades (General Leo and Griag). Just throwing it out there.

I have not made it that far yet, so I can't say who is evil at this point. But they say he is the "brains" of the duo.

I'm watching a stream and the hero, the little girl (in a cat suit!) and the blonde mage all have different outfits. Does all armor reflect on character in the game or something?

I have reached the part that they showed in the gameplay videos and the demo's that they had in Japan. (Going to go and fight the giant scorpion). I have ran across 3 metal slimes (2 were in the same battle) and have managed to defeat all of them. Either I am using up all my lifetime supply of luck or they are not running away as much as they normally like to. I did manage to defeat one with a critical hit, which was exciting since I have not had many critical hits so far playing in general. For the quest where you need to find the golden cactus it also showed up my first battle with a cactus after taking the quest, so I am thinking that maybe today is just a lucky day for me.

Resurrection spell for where I am in the game now is:

だばか ざせり ずずべす

かぬの ぐひな ま

At least in the 3DS I have not seen any armor reflected in the normal character animation. A few times for the story it has changed though. After having escaped from jail I wore a scarf around my head for a time. Kamyu and I wore a light cloth outfit for the steam bath house.

I love the aspect of being able to visit past DQ worlds in the 3DS version.

That said, is it StreetPass only unlockable like the DS DQ titles had, or did they implement an option to connect online once a day and get "tags" akin to streetpassing like the Bravely games, and DQVII/DQVIII 3DS? I hope it's the latter as if the 3DS release is localized, nobody in the west will really get to experience those.

I'm in the US, you don't need to connect online or take your 3DS outside and hope someone is doing the same thing to unlock this part of the game/play the past DQ worlds.

What's the StreetPass aspect then? I thought that was it.

It's like that Find Mii game on 3DS. In Find Mii you can gain characters by StreetPass or use coin to get characters.(In DQ11 you can find the characters in the field in 3DS mode or the spots in 2D mode)

I don't recall who said it(maybe Saito) but you can enjoy the mini game without StreetPass but it "might" be easier if you use it.

Ah, the Yocchi, right? And you can send them into dungeons and they'll either fight automatically or you can control them? At least that's what I saw in some article.

This one, in fact, which is why I thought the previous DQ world feature was also tied into StreetPass.

http://nintendoeverything.com/dragon-quest-xi-3ds-exclusive-features-detailed-streetpass-visit-past-dragon-quest-worlds/

  • The 3DS version uses “StreetPass†functionality.
  • The main element of StreetPass sees players interacting with a race known as the Yocchi.
  • The Yocchi will request that you rescue the Yocchi in critical situations that you encounter along your journey.
  • The key to rescuing Yocchi is a dungeon called the “Labyrinth Beyond Time.â€
  • You can form a party of up to eight Yocchi from among the Yocchi you gather, and send them off into the dungeon.
  • In the dungeon, you can choose whether to control the Yocchi directly or proceed automatically. Choosing the latter means both movement and battles are automatic.
  • There are treasure chests and you can obtain items in the dungeon.
  • The abilities of each Yocchi differ, and various exist from weak to strong. They will not return if they’re killed by the enemy.
  • By defeating the “Gate Keeper†awaiting at the end of the dungeon, you will obtain an “Adventure Log Password.â€
  • By giving the Adventure Log Password to the Yocchi elder, you can go the worlds of past Dragon Quest games.(In the Nintendo Direct, we see the player visit the worlds of Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest V.)
  • There are problems occurring in the worlds of past Dragon Quest games, and resolving them has something to do with saving the Yocchi.

You gather Yocchi as you travel around the map. They appear randomly scattered about. So far all the ones I have found normally have been good enough to get me thorough a map. You can't use higher rank ones that you get from street pass until you advance far enough in the dungeons to use them anyway so at least early on I don't feel much need to street pass.

As soon as I got the boat I started wandering every place I could that I knew would not advance the story. I was happy to be able to make it back to my home town. Now at least I have it in my Rula list. I battled Kandata for some black pepper, and I found the battle with him to be one of the most challenging I have had up to date. I was only level 20 at the time, and I might be falling behind on armor since crafting can make better armor than what you can buy I hold off purchasing anything in the hopes that I can get the recipe soon instead. I have now made it to the town with the martial arts competition, but the battery on the 3DS once again reached its limits for now.

The ones you find through the map will be good enough till the end(at 9th Floor right now at lvl80)

  • 3 weeks later...

I won the Jackpot myself today!

I have made it past the halfway point so the game no longer will give new spells of resurrection.

I reunited with Rou and Sylvia. I really enjoyed meeting up with Sylvia and the parade. I checked out the PS4 version and compared the scene, and you get a much better hug in the 3DS version than the PS4 version. Kind of turned me off from the PS4 version. All the colors also seemed so much more muted and the character expressions were not as expressive. I also have been really enjoying Sylvia's theme music. In general the music in the game has been good though they are reusing some tunes from previous games more times than I think they ought to. I am really slow at progressing the game. I don't know exactly what it is I do that makes things take twice as long but I am at 60 hours in the game. Before I had to put the 3DS back on the charger I met up with my zombie father and I am either in a dream or the past. I was glad that the priest let me save there since the battery was flashing at me.
