I don’t know about the rest of you, but I mute the game and listen to a podcast when I’m level grinding, so I spend like 60% of my time without listening to the music.

My new favorite is emulation or PC gaming with 1 window Netflix, 1 game. Zero game sounds.

That’s actually what I do with The Sims.

Our product manager played the game all the way through, barely touching sidequests, and his file is 95 hours. Mine is close to 200, but I also know I left it running a lot, so I'd estimate somewhere

I don't think the problem is SE doesn't care.  That was technically a problem post-DQMJ, the last game while Wada was president, that SE directly promoted, and asked the help of journalists for some d

Man...who knew the can of worms I would open by talking about and posting this article. The preview was in the previews section, a few pages in. I'd call it the rough middle of the magazine.

Eh, I'd argue it's not the best quality midi they could be using for the series. Plenty of other games use midi and they sound much better in terms of quality.

But like I said before, at this point I don't care what they use. I've a feeling we won't see an improved sound system until Sugiyama is no longer at the reigns.

It's too bad he just doesn't have a small group of performers play/record the music for the games, similar to what Yuzo Koshiro does, while keeping the big orchestra symphonic suites as something else.

Right, but that's the main point though.  We all know all too well there isn't going to be any change until Sugiyama gives up the reigns, especially as he's become more and more conservative, absolute, and stalwart in his viewpoints.

Hell, I even do this in VR. Just pin a window in the corner of my vision and start up YouTube or something.

I'm not much into changing music, except in MMO's, where I'll literally go through the entire OST, cherry-pick the tracks I don't like, then put in tracks from games I do like.  Only because you can't play MMO's while being distracted, as most have brutal mechanics where even lower level monsters can get a hand up on you (like critical attack rules or status effects, or defense/equipment stripping...or things like looting players if loot drops on the ground or I miss my chance to roll for loot, or looting monsters for games where loot drops on the ground...and that can be painful if someone gets my rare I just worked 3 weeks for), unless you go really low level.  So I'd rather the music just be as enjoyable as possible while I play.

Even in guilds I rarely ever chat unless I'm in a comfortable spot where I can be a little distracted, or we're in a team and thus tactics are more easily discussed by voice...or requests for healing/buffs.

However, when there is a really solid youtube video on that I want to watch, I will do this while grinding.  When it comes to things like Casino, I'll do this with movies or tv show binging.  The interesting thing is I'll sometimes binge watch certain channels and often this coincides with certain games.  So whenever I think about Xenoblade, for instance, I recall all of the Mises Institute related videos, and Austrian Economics, lol.  When I play Final Fantasy XII, I recall rather vividly Mark Passio's discussions on Natural Law, Hermeticism, and Shamanism.

While yes, modern DQ music (at least as it is heard in-game) is probably written with standard MIDI equipment, and Sugiyama likely has all his music sitting around in MIDI format, it is not stored or read as a MIDI on the game disk/cart/download. The music has been recorded into a streaming format, and from a technical standpoint is no different than orchestrated music.

Now that I didn't know.  However the instrument quality is not on par with high-grade synthesized instruments, or live recordings.  By streaming format, do you mean it's simply recorded as a standard audio file like WAV, MP3, or OGG?  So in that sense @Michi is actually correct.

Ok i forgot that Sugiyama does own the music. wasn't factoring that in. plus its not that big of a deal verses the puns and name changes. i have said this plenty of times, I like the accents. not the name changes and damned puns. If i seem like i'm angry its because i feel like i am apart of a tiny percent (probably 1%) of DQ fans outside of Japan that hates the changes.

so you can see why i didn't care too much for having my words changed, making it look like i said i like something that i hate.

Japanese humor is based mostly around puns. It’s in the spirit of the franchise to have a sense of humor like that. I’m sure the Japanese would appreciate it.

the guy changed what i had said. he didn't even mention he changed it. like what some people do. the will word a post differently and say "fixed" don't get me wrong because i would still be aggravated. the pun ridden localization can go screw off.

It was a good natured joke. But if you wanna react that way, you can bounce. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

This, but everyone - it's not MIDI! MIDI is nowhere near as nice sounding as the synthesized soundtracks of DQ games. I personally have zero problem with the way the games sound without orchestrated soundtracks, and consider the orchestrated versions a separate treat. I'm not just saying that because I work for SE. :P

While it's not technically correct to call all programmatically generated music "MIDI" (since MIDI denotes one specific standard), I'd at least expect people to understand that the term "MIDI" also doesn't imply any specific kind of audio quality. When people use it about the DQ soundtracks they are just using it to differentiate from "recorded from people playing real live instruments".

It's easy to confuse the term "MIDI" with the old-school .mid music format used by many 90s PC games, and which most soundcards (but definitely not all) would play in a manner that sounded quite awful compared to what you hear in video games today. But I'm pretty sure that's not what anyone means when they use it in relation to DQ soundtracks. ;)

In short, DQXI's soundtrack might not technically be MIDI, but it might as well be. That wouldn't be the case if it were an orchestral recording. :)

Except if it was a real MIDI then we could extract music data and not just audio...

Have you not seen the cardinal sin list by AustNerevar? How in the world is changing Infernus Crab to"Crabber Dabber Doo" got anything  to do with the original puns? I get that the original japanese version has humor. but some changes are downright stupid.

I had no idea anyone even paid attention to that.

I kind of feel that too, but not about the puns and names. I absolutely hate that they are changing the classic menus with that amateurish UI. In a perfect world, they'd give us the option to toggle between UIs.

I was mostly referring to .mid, which is, honestly, what I think a lot of people think of when they hear the term MIDI anyway.

That all said, really? I think the soundtrack sounds great.

No i am not angry at you AustNerevar. The list you have, while it is just the beginning, has good examples. I feel like what the crazy localazation team is doing is reversing the humor and the humility. Take for example Dharma Temple, they changed it to "all trades abby" so they could have a priest named jack, get it? heh heh, its so funny because that makes him the jack of all trades. ha ha ha. You know that scene in family guy where peter is having a good time and buzz killington walks in the room and peter just has to sigh and rub his nose bridge out of pure annoyance? that is what it does to me. for people that did not know the old DQ games, not sure how they responded. It really feels like at times we are getting Dragon Quest Abridged now. could you imagine if we never got regular DBZ? the old dub seemed abridged anyways, i mean the newer dub.

I wish I could say the same. It sounds beyond horrible. It's not just that it's synthetic, it's just that it's completely devoid of everything that makes Sugiyama's music sound good, and most of the other games in the DQ series had that problem, so I have no idea why they keep doing it like this. I absolutely loved the orchestral soundtrack releases for most of the games, but I rarely care for how it comes out in the games. Except from DQ8 for obvious reasons. And DQ Builders, that one did it well.

Okay, you can’t make a point about bad puns in Dragon Quest, then use, Jack of Alltrades and Master of Nu’un, the world’s greatest pun of all time, as your example.

10,000 "Your argument is invalid" memes just ran though my mind.  Those are the best of puns indeed.  Then again, I find the puns to be as much a part now of DQ as the slimes and love them both equally, so there's that.

I read it from time to time.  I love the puns, but your reactions to them crack me up!

I love some of the puns, I do. I just think they are way too many of them and it kind of lessens the novelty of them. And a few of them seem arbitrary.

But again, that list is made from a place of love.

You know Builders wasn't orchestrated though, right? It's the same synthetic stuff. It sounds fine to me, anyway.

Also, "they" keep doing it like this because that's Sugiyama's decision.

What I was saying is, synthetic music can sound great. In fact it does in most video games ever made. It just doesn't in DQXI.

Ignoring the fact that I've already perused the soundtrack, even just watching the western announcement trailer, it's immediately grating.

What is the deal with this? was 2005 (DQ8) just a time before Sugiyama started cracking down on his symphonic version being used?
