Fan Covers of DQ Songs

Recommended Posts

So I was roaming Youtube today (not safe to do alone), and I encountered an account labeled johe1979, which hosts covers of video game music by a jazz quartet. Two of the themes include the soaring godbird theme from III and the Pegasus theme from VI. Another video of the quartet on a different channel has "Hometown of the Brave" from IV.

I don't know of too many DQ fan covers myself, but one channel I found a couple years ago was that of hyadain (Wikipedia page). He's done covers of several other game series, but most of his DQ covers are of IV. There are subbed videos of his work on YouTube:

Ragnar and Healie (Ch. 1 overworld)

A Musical of Chapter 2 (Ch. 2 overworld)

Royal Straight Flush (casino theme)

Torneko's Song (Ch. 3 overworld, town)

Feelings for Cynthia (Ch. 5 overworld; Homeland)

Journey to Tomorrow (the comments say it's a remix of Hairspray's "You Can't Stop the Beat!")

There are, IMO, quite a few pretty good Dragon Quest cover artists. I'm biased, so I'll point out my own works, but I'll also share other folks.

For example, here's stuff by Soundole VGM Covers:

Minuet from DQIV

Temple from DQIII

and Tantengel Castle from DQ

I could honestly make an entire post with just Soundole covers from DQ, but I'll hold off there.

Soundole did do a collaboration with Steven Morris VGM for Toward the Horizon from DQ5...

And then, there's Mohawk Gaymer,  who worked with me on Dragon Quest IV's Homeland and on a different  cover of DQ5's Toward the Horizon.

These are just a sample of covers I know about. :)

I was just going through the Hyadain playlist.

Me: (2:00 into A Musical of Chapter 2) Y'know, this is awful tame for Hyadain.

Me: (2:10 into A Musical of Chapter 2) Nevermind.

Video game cover band Descendants of Erdrick have two Dragon Warrior medleys (one with the original band on their first LP, and another with the reformed band on their most recent album, Advent.)  Amanda Lepre, the bandleader is also a guitarist for Andrew W.K.

Descendants of Erdrick - A Slime Draws Near:

Descendants of Erdrick - Fortune Smiles Upon Thee:

They are working on a new album, but I'm not yet sure on the release date. I think it is supposed to have a new DW cover on it, but we'll see.

I posted this in a status update thread of Ignasia's a while ago, but internet musician Brando (of Duane and Brando fame) has a good medley of DQ I songs. Its the instrumental of a rap, but that's not quite a cover.

There are a ton of Japanese Dragon Quest fans on Instagram. Roto Girl is one who routinely posts DQ piano covers.

I never considered that Japanese gamers might import the NES Dragon Warrior games from the states. Is the first one a commodity over there because the engine received updates for the English release? Or is likely just for the sake of collecting?

Not sure. There are enough Western people in Japan and enough Japanese people in the West that it's plausible she may have imported or bought it in the US, though. My wife has quite a few friends from Japan who now live raise their kids in New York. Sometimes they move back to Japan after awhile. She may have spent time in the US or just wanted to own all iterations of the original version of Dragon Quest-FC/NES.
