VPN

Recommended Posts

Anyone use a VPN for daily browsing? Or for downloading stuff maybe they shouldn't? Or just from time to time for the hell of it?

I barely follow news, but supposedly our Internet browsing can be monitored more closely now or will be soon. I've seen lots of people discussing getting a VPN service and leave it on often.

Any suggestions? Personal stories?

I only use one so I can watch anime on crunchyroll that isn't available in europe. Can't say I know too much about it tho. So, for recommendations I hope someone else has something. But it has worked fine for me I guess.

I only used it for playing Dragon Quest X, and it worked fine. I haven't used one besides that, though.

Which do you use?

I used SoftEther, which was a free option that worked well enough, considering I only played the PC trial of DQX with the VPN (I played further with the full game on 3DS, but that didn't require a VPN). SoftEther relied on people opening up an IP from their location, which people connected to.

I know many people recommend Amazon Web Services, and I think that's what Erdrick uses. It's likely far better than SoftEther, and I think you can just choose your desired location and be on your way. Bear in mind that this is a paid option though.

I don't know how secure AWS is. That's not to say it isn't, but I didn't choose it for security. I chose it for Dragon Quest, lol.

Afraid Donald Trump is gonna see your icky porn visits? Maybe he got the idea to hire prostitutes to pee on the Obama's hotel bed after the fact from your browsing history.

Yeah, with Net Neutrality going into the toilet, all those Trump supporters will get to see the Brave New World they voted for.

Okay, enough politics, back to the discussion at hand.  We used VPN at MTV back in the day, but it was a huge pain and involved a mobile fob with a constantly changing number and you had to input the current number to get it to work.  And even then it was wonky.  That was around 2004.  Hopefully we've got better fob technology now.

Example of better fobs:

I'm also interested in trying VPN for DQX, but I may also check out the PC version if I have any free time (Hah!) in July.  Since I'm already in Japan, I won't need to VPN right now.  I also wonder what the process is for routing a PS4, as I'm picking that version up in July, when it's released here.

Finally got a VPN today and I'm liking it. I have done virus protection with AVG for years, and they just emailed me about $30 VPN for a full year. Couldn't beat $2.50 a month, so signed up. Tried a few things and it's been good. Buh bye ya'll... virtually.

If it's the monitoring they bothers you I'd avoid getting a U.S based VPN. AVG's VPN in particular keeps logs of it's users though they claim to wipe it after a few month.

I've been thinking about getting a VPN as well lately.  Not really sure where to start though.  Are there any decent-enough free ones that I can use just to test the waters before I jump in with something that has a price tag?

A lot of them have free trials. You can find a list of many good and private one's here

As for one that's free I would go with ProtonVpn. It's going to be pretty slow at the free tier but it'll let you mess around with it for a bit.
