"Restoration" Project (Controversial)

Recommended Posts

I noticed that as well...I don't know, it's really odd how the scene plays out.  Maybe because in those moments he used it only to stab it, while the final stab from the original was him literally stabbing himself, and the recent Japanese government obsession with "influential" concepts from art and media on the minds of children?  They may see it as more positive because he throws away the knife, and opts for magic, something spiritual versus something spiritual?  So less likely to trigger a reaction of kids using knives to remove things from their bodies?  I don't know.  The knife on the ground being just for realism, since that's where he left it?

I mean there is a tendency towards removing/making any and all "weapons" out to be evil.  Maybe that's the direction they're taking there, since guns aren't really a thing there?  While we're going for guns?  So...you leave the knife behind, because it's "too dangerous" and it's not necessary to get the job done?  Maybe they want that sort of thought process?

Yeah, it's understandable in that sense, though the whole game has people wielding weapons (later in the story the player even uses them to beat this very character to a pulp).

I guess the question is "who cares enough about panty shots in a world where porn is a click away?"

I do, because I require ass and kooch in my direct line of sight at all times.

Yeah it seems like a lot of effort.  There are available alternatives, like the mobile versions if people are "offended" at not seeing as much Jessica flesh as some fans feel they're entitled to.  Check out Google images if that's your thing.  They got all sortsa crazy s**t on there.

And there's always the PS2 version. Might not be as readily available as the mobile port, but it's still ready and waiting if someone wants a home console experience with the game.

Yeah, I didn't mention that just because it's not as easily acquired 11 years after the release, but totally.  I've been thinking a lot about how there's no optimal version of DQVIII.  In any case there's almost always something that people will like about any one version over the other.  The PS2 version's orchestral OST and voice acting.  The mobile version's upgraded graphics, touch-screen interface, and portable ease of use (since most people already have smart phones or tablets).  The 3DS's bonus content, plus the fact that it's portable with voice acting.

We just have to wait for Citra to improve - then we can enjoy the 3DS version in HD. Might be kind of awkward though, if you don't have two monitors. The orchestral music can be patched back into the 3DS version, I'm sure. I guess that still leaves the censorship problem, but if there are sufficiently dedicated fans, someone will learn to patch the original content in.

You're very welcome. I feel as if I haven't done my job properly if I don't hear this phrase at least once a day.

I know people like to blame this on Nintendo. If it's changed afterwards, then it's Nintendo. If the original game has it, it's likely thanks to the CERO rating board, which I hear can be pretty strict thanks to China an' all.

Well, I hear people say that it's Nintendo's fault that Square Enix has to censor Dragon Quest VIII, because of the fact that the Nintendo 3DS has a family friendly image.

Gamers (not all, mind you) love to use Nintendo as scapegoat material.

To be fair, that is a possibility. But there are plenty of games with content that could be considered more lewd on the platform so it's really hard to tell.

Nintendo has done plenty to warrant first reactions when it comes to these kinds of changes. And this is coming from the guy who doesn't have a problem with them. My opinion on changes has always been, "Do I think it's better than the original version? Then I don't care."

Tbh, I highly doubt it's Nintendo's fault that Jessica's outfits were changed in the Japanese version.

Just look at some of the outfits Japanese version of TMS#FE. If Nintendo was that picky about the image of the Wii U as family friendly, that game simply wouldn't slide.

(A lot of the outfits were censored in America, though).

Chances are, it was Cero being picky about it. Not Nintendo.

If it's something like Fire Emblem where significant changes were made after the game's release, then yes. (And hoo boy, were there some hypocrites and outright unhinged people who pushed that!) That's not the case with VIII, though. This was a decision the developers made, and like I said, to likely get the CERO A rating. The reasons behind it are apples and oranges. Nintendo does edit to uphold the family friendly image, while getting the general CERO rating means higher distribution in some regions.

There was one scene that (unfortunately) popped in my mind recently and I'm wondering if it was altered.

The scene from the Argonian Hunting Ground involving Charmless trying to ride Medea.

I mean, it would probably be an issue if she was a human. But unless there was some penetration that I missed when I was texting during that cutscene, I'm sure it wouldn't need to be cut. The scene is actually pretty crucial in a way similar to the David dog food eating scene.

The scene goes: Hero wakes up, sees Charmles trying to ride Medea while Trode tries to stop him. Charmles hits Medea with a riding crop(I think that's what it's called), she flings him off and he hits the ground. Trode angrily offers to be punished in Medea's place and then they get interrupted by Yangus. Charmles doesn't use anything involving a knife or otherwise.

Admittedly, the only reason I wondered about this scene was because of the implication involving Medea. Charmles doesn't know Medea was transformed into a horse, but the party and player does.

Dakhil posted that it remained intact though, so it wasn't a problem for Nintendo(admittedly this makes me question the David scene alteration more now, even with some of the implications involved).

I'm guessing Yuji Horii finds the scene where David was eating Leopold's food to check if it's poisoned, after being forced to by Master Dominico, to be too extreme for his personal preference. It personally doesn't make sense to me to cut out that scene, but it is what it is.

It was probably done to get the Cero rating to A.

I guess we know who likes watching others eat dog food around here though... ;)
