The Dharma section is still murder, even on remake

Recommended Posts

I don't know about anyone else, but this "It's too easy" stuff people keep bringing up has officially been tossed out the window when you reach the Cave to Alltrades/Alltrades section. It kicked my butt in the PS1 version and continues to do so even on this remake, despite me breezing through regular enemy encounters. Now, I'm not referring to the unbeatable bosses--I'm referring to the string of beatable ones. This is ALWAYS the point in DQVII where I have my first party wipeout.

Are my levels appropriate? Everyone is averaging Level 16-17 right now. I've been avoiding grinding because...I'm AT Alltrades and once I finish the boss fights, I can change vocations and start vocational grinding, so I'm really not looking forward to additional grinding THIS close to obtaining the vocations.

Thoughts?

I mean they kept the skill stripping, so Randoms still take forever to complete (and the game is more randoms prone than the PSX version) and Inopp and Gonz still force you to rely on an item that single target heals for 20-30 HP a turn when they can outpace that.

As for the arena... I actually found it easier this time. Neris/Nava was torture when I first fought her on PS1 and now she's... not.

Stock up on lots of medicinal herbs, that's what I did, it was still torture but it made it a bit bearable.

Oh, trust me--I'm covered in that area. I'm one of those "Keeps 99 herbs in the bag at all times" sort of players. I got into a habit ever since the bag made its debut in this series of carrying 99 herbs and I did so so that I could heal in between battles while conserving MP.

Still, though--when you have characters hitting 30-60 a turn and your herbs heal at 30 max...you get the idea. :(

Last night I made it to the point where I had our powers restored but did a quick save and went to sleep. I have NO idea how the rest is going to pan out. That pig and tiger were TOUGH. O_o

My levels were 14, 14, whatever the hell Gabo was, and it was kinda easier than expected. I had no wipes, or deaths at all, and not even Nava's Crackle wrecked me, and I had been expecting someone to die in that fight.

The rest of the battles aren't as tough in my opinion, having your skills back make them a lot easier. The final boss of the area gave me some trouble, he killed two of my party members, but I still beat him on my first try so you should be fine, I think.

I had Hero and Ruff with Edged Boomerangs. I left Ruff on Show no Mercy and Maribel on Focus on Healing (with the salvation stone) and had just about zero problems with the randos.

That's exactly what I did, except I had Ruff on Fight Wisely but I don't think it really matters.

I was a lower level than OP when finishing it, the only real trouble I had besides the long, narrow, maze-like, dungeons over-saturated with random monsters was the Boss Fight with those two monsters, one of which constantly blinds your entire team. Since you're pretty much limited to normal attacks it was horrible and my boomerangs probably didn't help much at that point as boomerangs have slightly lower accuracy than single hit weapons iirc. I used those same tactics against the boss, and beat it on my second try with my only surviving party member being Ruff at >20 hp.

After that it gets a lot easier once you get your abilities back and get to the arena. Didn't have much trouble there, I think the boss of the arena might have killed one party member but that's it.

I think that fight with the 2 monsters is a little luck based solely cause of their attacks. The one on the left dazzled me at least twice. Right after the dazzle wore off, he put it right back up. The one on the right can desperate attack for like 60 damage. I was getting hit for way too much, healing for too little, and was dealing almost no damage. The fight would be manageable if he didn't have that dazzle. 2nd time there were no dazzles and maybe 1 desperate attack.

I had a saw blade from the casino which is still the best weapon I have for the hero and I just beat the clock tower area (3 areas later). I even got enough tokens for the expensive armor and shields from the casino and I still lost the first time. My levels were around 17 I think.

I thought the rock was a single target sage rock which would have made the fight easier, but then I see it's actually worse than heal.

The arena and the final boss of the abbey I had few problems with maybe cause all you need is midheal and sap.

In honesty, I was dreading this part, but I didn't have too much of an issue. I feel the general consensus is Ruff with the edged boomerang and Maribel heal. I don't remember what level everyone was but I actually started avoiding monsters because I felt overleveled. (And than Seto wiped the floor with me later)

I thought it was much easier than the PS1 version. Hero 15, Maribel 15, Gabo 13 when I finished the section. I'll be honest, I broke a sweat when the warthog and the tiger both hit the hero with desperate attacks and killed him on the first turn, but I ended up winning that battle without him and without incurring further casualties.

Speaking of vocational training, I heard that the slime grotto you get early on has a decent cap, like 19 or something like that. Is that true?

It is indeed!

In addition, all lithographs you get from Haven residents from the seventh one onward have no cap. :)

It was much easier for me because I spent time on Lucky Panel before going to the abbey and got some equip upgrades/extra gold from selling off extras. Rasher and Stripes were still a bit of a pain even when prepared for them though. The arena and rest of the fights were far easier though.

Did they at least make the storyline for that part better? When I replayed dw7 on ps1 last year I was so annoyed with how the dharma part dragged on with the brother and sister, or whoever those 2 were. I couldnt wait for it to end so I could finally be rid of those 2, particularly the girl.

Geez, I am at 18, 18 and 17 for Gabo and just got totally murdered >.< , first round 2 were dead and I had purchased upgrades at the Rest before I went in expecting a tough battle.

My highest levels are 15 currently(Ruff is either 11 or 12, I'll have to check). ^

I'm not at Alltrades yet, because I'm going to the Casino for a massive token winning binge.

I actually got a little lucky with the(not counting the runt at Greenthumbs Garden, he's nothing) boss fights from the last two scenarios.

I went into the battle with the Slaughtomaton needing some serious healing, luck was on my side and no one got killed while I recovered my party on and off during the early rounds.

Grody Gumpdrops aka Cavemon still has Sizzle. I got lucky he only casted it once. My fights on the original PS1 version were far more intense.

I didn't have any trouble with Alltrades this time around actually. I don't remember my exact levels at the time, but they weren't above 20.

I had Hero and Ruff with Edged Boomerangs, and Maribel was healing. Then again though, one major difference from most other players (I'd assume?) was that my Hero was made out of titanium at that point and had over 100 defense, making most attacks on him do very low damage. I guess I got lucky with resilience seeds. :P

Actually, I'm curious; for those still in the Alltrades section, what is your Hero's defense?

Did you play lucky panel and the casino for FAR better equipment though? I've upgraded almost 20 Def for each person. And Platty's ATK went up almost 30. Thank you casino!

Yes. And you get $#!& experience, so it's perfect.

Yeah but just to resell some stuff, I never got anything that was better than could be purhcased there, I created a save there before going on, I will have to go back and try that, thanks.

Casino has some Magical Vestment for 1000 coins for Maribel. Huge jump. Trying to get the White Shield. I think she can do that. Also, the Trailblazing Bandana or whatever for 100 coins is a +5 Def accessory. Got that for all.

If you win a War Hammer for the Hero, you will not need to buy him a new weapon for a long time to come.

Lucky panel really is broken.

It is. I used to write it all down. Now I just take pictures on my cell phone. I've done very well on there. Trying to get the White Shield before I move on.

Can Maribel equip that?
