Differences in mobile re releases

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, been a while. Just curious about what is changed in the mobile releases of the games. I have heard that DQIII is missing all the extra game content that the GBC release had. Would like to know all the differences/what was added/ what was removed from 1-6 on the mobile versions. Next question... can I download and play the mobile versions on a laptop? Does that work?

Special Note: All of these games are in Portrait mode, with no Landscape support.  None of them have native controller support, so any potential support will have to come from third party programs/apps.

DQ1: Slightly enhanced textures from the DQ1 mobile original release (JP only), which was based on the SFC version.  Exp and Gold increased to speed up the game as well.  I believe there are a few minor differences...oh right, the localization is a throwback to the NES days, but the olde English is more accurate than the original NES translation, even if it's still a silly faux variant.

DQ2: Same faux olde English as the DQ1 mobile localization received.  This too is based on the original mobile Japanese-only release, which was based on the SFC version.  It comes with one special feature, that I believe, but I'm not sure, is unique to the iOS/Android version: The game will not allow you to enter the Cave to Rhone without all the Crests, which have been renamed along with everything else from the older localizations.

DQ3: Probably the biggest change is what you mentioned: no Pachisi/Sugoroku.  As a result a lot of infinite equipment, especially favouring Fighters/Martial Artists, and female toons, has been reduced to 1 copy.  It's based on the original Mobile release, only unlike DQ2 and 1, they added NOTHING from that version.  NOTHING.  It's just been upscaled to fit the larger phone screens of today.  So it's also based on the SFC, thus all changes with the GBC, and GBC additions are not present, in case you were a fan of them.  So no Grand Dragon or Rubiss Sword, or the ultimate farming room...Ice Cave 1.  Like the SFC, and original Japan-only mobile release, it has the hard version of Baramos, so this is the defacto most difficult version of DQ3, by almost a 10mile stretch, mostly due to equipment limitations, and the lack of a good Magic Seed farming map...so good luck with that uber normal monster that looks like Baramos in the first bonus dungeon!

DQ4:

1) Township recruitment triggers are changed

DS progression is:

Form 1) Magic Key
Form 2) Final Key
Form 3) Esturk's Defeat
Form 4) After meeting the Zenith Dragon
Final Form) After beating the game, and starting up Chapter 6.

Mobile progression is:

Form 1) Magic Key
Form 2) Balzack's Defeat
Form 3) Final Key
Form 4) Esturk's Defeat
Final Form) After meeting the Zenith Dragon

2) Obviously no tag feature.

3) For us, unlike Japan, we did NOT have the party chat with the DS, but for the mobile we do. So you've now Party Chat, fully translated, to expand your experience with.

DQV:

1) Removed the tag feature at the bottom of the Knick-knackatory.

2) Evac and Zoom were changed from 8MP to 1MP.

3) Bag cannot be renamed.  Bug maybe?  Or oversight of stupidity?

DQVI:

1) Area level caps are +10 over the DS version. So feel free to grind away for an easy Murdaw battle.

2) There are 2 Meteorite Bracers. The first is still the one in Amor. The second is gained in Suite Dreams, from the lady there, after turning in the 16th and final Dream.

3) Terry starts at level 33, with Warrior/Martial Artist/Mage/Priest all mastered, and at Gladiator level 1, with +5 Strength and +38 Agility.

4) Suite Dreams now requires finding 16 Dreams from various bookshelves. There is no order required for them, so the best possible order I came up with is the following:

* Number 1: Well South of Amor. Dream World.
* Number 2: Fortune Teller on the Western edge of the continent with Somnia that's inaccessible until after Clearvale. She's just SE of Medford's Manor for the fastest Zoom. Dream world.
* Number 3: Sunken Ship. Real world.
* Number 4: Turnscoat, NW exterior. Real world.
* Number 5: Felonia Castle, 2F far right. Real world.
* Number 6: Felonia Castle, adjacent building where the Queen Mother lives. Real world.
* Number 7: Poseidon's Palace. Real world.
* Number 8: Underwater Shrine near Howcastle. Real world.
* Number 9: Suite Dreams. Basement. Dream world. <<- Pick up Curie along with this!
* Number 10: Suite Dreams. Basement. Dream world.
* Number 11: Sorceria, NW stairs, that underground area. Dream world.
* Number 12: Sorceria, NW stairs, that underground area. Dream world.
* Number 13: Castle Graceskull, top floor. Dream world.
* Number 14: Cloudsgate Castle, library, lower right. Dream world.
* Number 15: Greedmore Valley. ...I'm guessing the mansion with the rich bastard that sends you on the ridiculous quest for money, for the Sage's "treasure." Dreadrealm.
* Number 16: Gallows Moor. The only house that exists within the prison, sounds like the second floor of the Inn. Dread Realm.

Clearly the available ones after getting Lorelei's Harp can be done in any order: 2 through 8.

Getting 7 Dreams will unlock the stairs to the bottom, and allow access to Curie. Through Curie, Shelley can be obtained. Getting all 16 dreams will unlock Mercury and a second Meteorite Bracer.

5) Class changes

Ranger -> MP mod from .7 to 1.2

Luminary -> Mastery bonus from +15 to +20

Sage -> totally changed level up requirements:

- Vocation level 2: 14 -> 24 battles
- Vocation level 3: 25 *no change
- Vocation level 4: 30 *no change
- Vocation level 5: 40 -> 35 battles
- Vocation level 6: 40 *no change
- Vocation level 7: 60 -> 45 battles
- Vocation level 8: 60 *no change

- Total battle count change: 270 -> 260

Paladin -> totally changed level up requirements:

- Vocation level 2: 24 -> 14
- Vocation level 3: 25 *no change
- Vocation level 4: 30 *no change
- Vocation level 5: 35 -> 40
- Vocation level 6: 40 *no change
- Vocation level 7: 45 -> 60
- Vocation level 8: 60 *no change

- Total battle count change: 260 -> 270

Liquid Metal Slime -> MP mod from .8 to .7, HP mod from .3 to .2

DQVII (these are what I know):

1) Encounter system altered to Random Encounters.  So no enemies on screen, except for story related monsters/bosses.

2) With the tag feature removed, so far all known special lithograph maps are available through the game normally, though I wouldn't be surprised if some were made available online.  Note I haven't checked anything yet.

DQVIII:

1) Alchemy pot starts at level 3, so instant alchemy from the beginning!  This also changes the pacing, so be careful, as the original game was set to assure levels and skill gains were helped along by finishing up necessary alchemy, while exploring.  So level differences for most players will be between 3~15 levels below par, the further you go, the higher the difference.  Of course natural grinders, it won't matter, but this balance shift is not addressed.

2) The alchemy pot wish from the bonus boss is instead changed to 5 Seeds of Skill, and this wish is infinite.  So say goodbye to grinding the post-game dungeon.

3) Cloud saving feature, which most of them do have...but I'm pointing this out because of the enormous gaps of time you're likely in between churches and towns compared to any and all other DQs.

4) There are a few other minor tweaks, but I can't recall them at this point.  OH, right, because it's based purely on the Japanese original, there is no symphonic suite, and instead you get the old synth-stylings of old school DQ, just with that slight upgrade for the PS2 era.  Along with this is the lack of the original US menu system, so it is old school DQ menus all the way.  OH, and one important detail: NO DRAGON SOUL, and no Eight going Super Saiyajin, as these were also International additions.

0.o wow thanks for all the useful information. I loaded up my GBC version of DQII and watched a little of a play through of the mobile version. I noticed that the layout of the castle is a little different too. The GBC DQII has staircases that lead into other rooms that are not there in the mobile game.

Adding onto what ignasia7 said about those releases:

In DQ I, the maximum experience was changed from 65,535 to 70,000.

In DQ II, the level caps got changed from 50, 40 45, and 35 to 50, 50, and 50 for Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke, respectively, but the maximum experience (1 million points) was not changed. The Zoom spell was upgraded to the version that let you choose a destination. The location of the Life Crest was changed, which is detailed in the below spoiler if you wish to know.

You get it from the King of Tantegel instead of in the Cave to Rhone's basement.

So one thing that I didn't get answered yet is if it can be played on a computer. Does it need to be on a phone?

Bluestacks and other android/ios emulators.

Also interesting about the stairs.  Like what sets of stairs and where are they? Towns/dungeons?

The inn in front of the first castle. In GB DQII there is a set of stairs at the inn that leads up to another room with NPC's. It's not in the mobile version.

Wow, they gave Terry all those additional mastered jobs in the mobile version of 6? That's pretty nice.

How do you activate the speed up mode in DQ1? I can't seem to find it.

I don't have a clue what speed up feature Iggy is talking about. Perhaps he's read that the gameplay overall is generally faster than previous incarnations of the game, and confused it for a separate feature? I don't know.

Also, I was under the impression that alchemy was always instant in the Japanese PS2 version of DQVIII, and that the timer was only added for the international releases.

There is some sort of online feature regarding Monster Lithographs for DQ7 iOS. I'm not sure what it does though, so... Perhaps it's related to the (also unknown) 3DS online feature? I know that version also has Internet features, not just surichigai'StreetPass.

That's probably it, I fixed the above post.  Thanks gooie and erdrick for the correction.

Intriguing.  I wonder if that's a difference between the SFC and GBC as well?  I also have to wonder what other small nuanced differences exist?

Also in Dragon Quest V DS Monty can rename your bag as if it were a monster, but in the mobile version he cannot.

I miss Bagel the Bag...

Sexual Chocolate is an even better name.

Hot Cocoa.

White Cocoa Powder.

M&M Sack.

Love Shack.

Bag of Infinite Holding.

Abyssal Hole.

"Name goes here" 's Butt.

Detention.

The Abyss.

The Hole.

Batman's Utility Belt.

The Utility Belt.

Knapsack.

The Black Hole-ding.

The Wagon (poor party members being forced to exist with all of that stuff, and the food, and sleeping gear...).

Other...porn references are also possible, including ones making fun of comedians and politicians you don't like, or feminazi's...oh, plenty to work with there.

Thingamajig.

What's It?

The Shack.

Cabin in the Woods.

I can't think right now, and I have to go, nor do I recall the character limitations.

Here at the Den, we specialize in two things, answering a topic, then derailing it into the deep dark woods, then into the unknown.  We here at the Den appreciate concerns over topic derailment, but frankly don't care, because life is always derailed, and so we take pride in our ability and nonchalance at tangential speech.

It's all in the disclaimer.  Thank you for choosing the Den for all your topic answering, then wild innuendo derailment needs!

Can anyone tell me the most current names for Poltergeist/Fightgeist and Specter/Spitegeist? On the Den's Bestiary for DQ1 iOS/Android, they are labelled as Fightgeist and Spitegeist respectively, but I believe these are just placeholders as the game hadn't been localized when the sprites were uploaded (I ripped them from the Japanese version when it first came out).
