YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,580
That works for me! Even if it weren't a pun it sounds like a good name for a sea side town, so I think it works.
Tiael 231
Sardine Bay!
YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,580
Sardine Bay! There's probably a real place called that for all we know.
Tiael 231
There is, in Bermuda. I still like the wordplay, Fishbel to Pilchard (Sardine) Bay.

Stepchan 192
So I rewatched the segment of the direct with DQVII's reveal, and I got a couple of things I noted. Namely, two characters names are different than in the PS1 version. Specifically, Melvin has been changed to Sir Mervyn and Gabo is now Ruff. This was all I could get from just the footage. Personally, I like Melvin/Mervyn's new name, not so much Gabo's, but the name changer exists so I'll likely just change it back to Gabo. Ruff? I think I'll rename him Rowlf. That name would've been PERFECT. Until whoever's in charge of the Muppets(Is it Disney now?) sends lawyers to SE's doors. You do know the name Rowlf isn't just limited to the Muppets, right? I didn't. Now you know, and knowing is half the battl- wait, I already made this joke this week... OH NO, I'M ON RERUNS. I was being playful with the lawsuit comment, though. Although now I'm curious about what other series have characters named Rowlf.
YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,580
I can just imagine the head lawyer of Disney being exactly like the blue haired lawyer from the Simpsons who speaks with the nasally voice.
Stepchan 192
I can just imagine the head lawyer of Disney being exactly like the blue haired lawyer from the Simpsons who speaks with the nasally voice. It's been a very long time since I've seen The Simpsons. Since Gabo and Melvins names have been changes, I wonder if Aira's changed. I know Keifer's is still the same. I haven't seen a screenshot or anything that shows Maribel's name.
YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,580
I think Maribel is safe. Someone pointed out that since she and Kiefer's names weren't changed in IX when the new translation ideas took over, her name will likely still be Maribel.
Erdrick The Hero 969
Pilchard Bay? Now that's a name I am disappointed about. What is wrong with Fishbel? Or perhaps Fishvale, another perfectly accurate way to translate the town's name? Both already have the english word "fish" in them, and "-bel" and "-vale" are common in town names. Why the hell did this need to be changed? Edited November 13, 2015 by Erdrick The Hero
YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,580
Cause new translation ideas. Whether you love them or hate them, they're gonna happen! It's really "ruff" sometimes...

jamiras843 116
Melvin's name change makes sense in the fact that it's going back to old English roots which have a lot of other Language influences. Ruff makes sense too since he couldn't talk before the boss. But Erdrick stated all this. The names mean nothing to me really. Mr. RPG 92
According to this, Fishbel is now Pilchard Bay. http://na.square-enix.com/us/blog/dragon-quest-vii-viii-3ds-are-coming-west Considering Pilchard is another word for sardines, I like it. Not too bad. I'm glad they're keeping with Estard. I'm so hyped for this game. I seriously can't wait.

This could be a sign that some characters and parts of the world will keep their names from the PSX version, but that may be a stretch.
Glaceon Mage 159
Estard was mentioned in IX, as was Kiefer, as noted. Both names have already been used by the modern translators.

I don't repeat. By the way, Kiefer and Maribel were both localized with those names in Dragon Quest 9. The modern translators have used those names.
