sounderfan84 90
Hopefully this relocalization doesn't involve adding puns. It was bad enough in 6.
YangustheLegendaryBandit 3,697
Of course it will have puns. And you can always change their names at Dharma/Alltrades.
ignasia 1,190
Mervyn means famous friend, good friend, or great leader. It also has an older context than Melvin, taking from old Celtic warrior names. So that fits better in context. Plus, the r and l, and i and y are interchangeable in Japanese, right? So essentially it's the same name, just different choices in those two letters. I'm really coming to like it now. Ruff...LOL, omg, that's just too much fun. I still prefer Gabo, but I like the ways Ruff can be utilized for commentary and jokes about the game. Plus it's a pretty damn endearing name the more I think about it. LOL, hell, you could do a play on the Showdown at the O.K. Corral. Or maybe a Guile theme... Do you like it...ruff?!?! Well, do ya? Boy, he sure is a ruff one, ain't he? Ruff around the edges? New to everything?

Mattcraft 690
Keep in mind... that there will be puns. Hopefully, it will remain the same as it was in say, DQ1-6's remakes and relocalizations.

jay 246
Honestly I wouldn't be too surprised if those are changed names. I remember in the manual in the original version, they had images with changes to Gabo and even Kiefer's names.

You do realize that's not necessary a good thing. i mean Count uptaten then Dr Agon and Matt tres It doesn't really hurt anything, if bad puns that are without a doubt going to be present really impede your play experience that much, just brave the typos of the original PS1 translation which didn't pun everything. Personally, I welcome the new translation, since the gap in quality between DQVII PS1 and DQVIII PS2 was very noticeable to me. The main reason I wanted this version localized so badly was so that it could have a translation of the same quality as the main series games after it. Honestly I wouldn't be too surprised if those are changed names. I remember in the manual in the original version, they had images with changes to Gabo and even Kiefer's names. It's more likely that this is the case for Gabo/Ruff than Melvin/Mervyn due to the former being more drastic (and goofy) while the latter has a very fitting name origin considering the character. Either way, just reporting what I saw in the brief gameplay scenes.

Mr. RPG 92
I hope the translation is closer to the original PlayStation translation, but I doubt it will be.

Stepchan 192
So I rewatched the segment of the direct with DQVII's reveal, and I got a couple of things I noted. I think I'll rename him Rowlf.

Erdrick The Hero 982
Now that a localization has been announced, I feel we should be wary of spoilers in case newcomers are looking to experience the game for the first time on 3DS/mobile. Now that I think about it... I believe Gabo is a Japanese onomatopoeia for a wimper or howl or something. I mean, if I remember correctly (it's been a couple years since I played the PS1 version) , Gabo says "Gabo" and only "Gabo" until Deathpal grants him the ability to speak Japanese English in present Mt. Ceide. Since I can only read a little Japanese so far, and I was playing by memory anyways, I've skipped past quite a lot of dialogue in the 3DS version, but I vaguely remember that being the case in Japanese as well - and this is why the party nicknames the white wolf boy "Gabo". In that sense, "Ruff" is a perfectly accurate way to translate his name without forcing it to be a pun. However, I still don't like "Ruff" as a name. But, I can live with it. I guess technically Mervyn is a perfectly acurate translation of メルビン, too. But accurately, it wouldn't be pronounced the way it looks like it would be. The "er" should be pronounced like the "Er" in "Erick" (which is also how I pronounce "Erdrick", by the way) rather than the "er" in "mermaid". All around I believe "Melvin" is a better translation, but I can respect "Mervyn". Edited November 13, 2015 by Erdrick The Hero

Fates 289
I am honestly to thrilled we are getting the game to care. They could change their names to anything for all I care. Name changes never bother me, to me, I'll always think of them by their original names no matter what they are localized as.
