What's your favorite Dragon Quest location?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, ol' Yangus 'ere wiv a question for ya!

Ok, ok, I'll cut the accent. For a while I've had this question on my mind, so here it is: what's your favorite location (or locations) in the series? Is it a town, castle, dungeon, tower, world, or what have you? Whatever your favorites are, let everyone know it's name and what game it comes from.

Off the top of my head at the moment, two of my favorites are the kingdom of GreatLog from Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 and Endor from Dragon Quest IV.

GreatLog holds a special place for me because of two things: one was the awesome music of the kingdom (usually called Town's Appearence) and the second is that this was the first time I felt the sense of heroism from playing an RPG. This was my second RPG I had ever played (the first being DWM1) and seeing GreatLog begin to sink into the sea because of Prince Kameha made me realize it was my goal to save the people and Tara and Cobi's new home. I also love the tropical theme of the island kingdom. A giant Palm tree in the middle of the ocean that doubles as a castle, library, coliseum, and homes? That's just, well, great!

As for Endor, this is the town where every main character comes to at some point in their journeys, whether for a new life style or in search of the fabled hero. It's the town that binds the party together before they even knew it...

Actually, I'd have mentioned Endor too. I recall all the time I spent there individually and with the whole gang. And I spent half my childhood at the casino there too, double or nothing again and again and again.

My other favorite location would be the 1st casino you come across in DQVII. Lucky panel for hours!

Actually my favorite place to visit by looks I would have to say is on  top of the tower of Ascantha where King Pavane resides...I like it especially after he comes to his realization that Queen Sasha would not want him to be eternally sulking.

Estard Island's Forbidden Zone. I love the puzzles from the PSX version of VII (one of my favorite parts of the game, which were sadly removed from the 3DS version). Plus the PSX version's music is very mysterious. (The instrumentation change in the symphonic version loses the charm... Still a good piece though.)

Definately the Dream World from Dragon Quest VI (SNES) I really liked the greenish color scheme to it and the whole layout. I would really like living in Sheina or Lidecod.

That or Dragon Quest 1 era Alefgarfd

The Dread Lair in DQ6.

The whole continent with Argonia in it in DQ8.

Knightmare Towers in DQ5.

The Royal Crypt in DQ4, for the liquid metal slime bonanza.

The isle of Luzami in DQ3.

Id say Tedaniki as my overall favorite place. Im not sure why, but I really liked the idea of the town being deserted during the day and populated at night by g-g-g-g-ghoooosts.

Some other places that I enjoyed in the series.

-Pirates House (Dq III)

-Welgarth (DQ II)

-Endor (DQ IV)

-Alefgard (DQ II)

-Osterfair (DQ II)

A few notables.

Tantegel - Main base for DQI and a cameo in DQII

Zenethia - Factor in 3 games.

Endor - Main base for the most part in DQIV.

Mentare area - So many stories in DQVII there.

Cave to Rhone/Rhone - Probably the toughest challenge in the DQ series is that trek to Rhone. You go in, dodge flames and four green dragons and pitfalls. You then get to the top. Made it! Right? Wrong. Giants and their heroic attacks for 150 and Gold Batboons who can take half your gold and send you to the king in one hit no matter what your levels are. That's not my "favorite" area, but beating DQII was one of my more prouder moments in gaming.

Noteworthy Places...

Dragon Quest VI:

Dhama Temple (Real World) - There is just something really cool about having to go around the decrepit abandoned temple to get back to the Dream World and to see the perfectly pristine version on the other side.

Dragon Warrior VII: (This game is full of great locations! Too many to mention)

Cave Underneath Dharma Temple - I love that cave connecting the cliff side town to the basement of Dharma.

Sphinx - Super fun both times you are there, especially in the 2nd disc and the upside down pyramid.

Wind Maze Dungeons - Very creative and fun places to explore and figure out.

BUT

My absolute favorite place is the Crystal Palace (DW7), specifically when it becomes part of the Demon Lord's castle. Most people know that there is a very quick and easy way to get into the deep depths of the Castle, however I still prefer to take the long route and walk through the entire Crystal Palace first to get there. I find it intriguing to walk through this majestic palace that was once full of life and thriving with people, now dark and abandoned with the excellent haunting music by Sugi. Hell, after that when you get into the organic, grotesque depths of the castle, that is super cool and fun too. SO MANY great places in DW7!

Mine is definitely the time travel version of Whealbrook (that's the name of the Hero's village, isn't it?) from the latter part of Dragon Quest V. Getting to talk to everybody from the Hero's childhood was just so touching. Second favorite would also have to be from DQV: the time travel version of Lofty Peak where you get to meet Pankraz and your mother during their courtship days.

I thought of 2 other locations I really like: Maella Abbey and Savella Cathedral from 8.

Both of these places, despite the corruption of the church, are well crafted and very grand to see and explore. After seeing a few older churches on my trip to Europe a few years ago, my appreciation for these locations have really grown. Plus that music, man...some of Sugiyama's best work from 8's soundtrack.

Oh! Another one of my favorite places is Reaper's Peak from DQ VI, especially when you choose the "Far Future" option.

Another favorite location of mine is the town of Narubia from Dragon Quest X's extended offline story. It's the most memorable location in the game to me, possibly because I put so much work into translating dialogue in the town. It's also where the name "Narubia Translations" comes from. :D

I can't remember the exact name of it, but I love the castle where you learn about Nokturnus in 6. Seeing his "backstory" and what kind of power he possess was frightening, and was an interesting area in 6. Plus it's where you get yourself a Spot Slime buddy.

It's strange how little I remember of this game. I beat it only just last year. It's almost like the entire game was just a dream...

A lot of towns, can't name 'em all, but, I do like snooping in the girl's dressing rooms at the casinos with the bunny girls. I do, find some of the underworld locations strange, Orgodemir's lair in DWVII with those disgusting living caves... ugh and the Tartarus in DQMJ.
