On the DS version I got him up to level 7 or 8, I never played the NES version.  I played Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 on NES but not the other two.

I actually just tried this out for myself on the NES version. I tried to go in there at level 4 with a Copper Sword and died rather quickly. I reset, got enough money to buy a Boomerang and also went up to level 5. Now I just got Healie without much trouble at all.

I did it at about level 5, with herbs in my inventory and bee-lined healie.  You can actually complete this chapter without Healie, which makes a scene later in the game not make any sense, as the game asumes you will take him and doesn't plan around you ignoring him.  XD
