The Wonders of Probability in DQ

Recommended Posts

While playing DQ V, I actively searched for some recruitable monsters while I recruited others by coincidence. I somehow recruited a Wyvern (1/16) on my very first try a while back. A Slime (1/2), Slime Knight (1/16), and Healer (1/32) took a reasonable amount of time to recruit, but a Curer (1/64) took a *very* long time to recruit. Probability is quite a fickle thing.

Today, I was grinding in the volcano south of Salabona. After a while, I managed to recruit a Dancing Jewel (1/16). I later got into my first fight with a Beast Master since loading the emulator, and I let it summon a Curer into battle. By the end of the fight, that Curer (1/128) joined me! I don't have a picture of "Curer gets up and seems to want to join you. Accept it? (Yes, No)" but have a picture below of having two Curers in my party.

The source for recruitment chances was King_Zenith's Monster Recruitment Guide on GameFAQs.

I've had some really good luck, mostly in my first playthroughs of DQ5 and DQ6 for the DS.

I got a King Cureslime(1/64 odds) recruit in my first encounter with one, I couldn't believe it! I even joked during the battle about it joining me.

When battling the bonus boss for the first time in DQ6's postgame, I got a Liquid Metal Mind drop from him. I don't know the odds for getting one without a party in the Thief class, but considering it's one of the special classes, it has to be very low odds.

On the DQV for SNES there is an Easter egg that allows for automatic recruitment. Have your hero in front of the party. Make sure he is not equipped with anything. Empty his inventory. Then place these and only these items in his inventory in this exact order.

Cypress Stick, Sharpened Bone, Hat of happiness, Club, Saw Blade, and Cloak of Evasion. Again do not equip any of these items.

Now the hero will always do critical hits, and any monster that can join will join.

And speaking of more good luck, I scored 777 on the 100 token slot machine in the Baccarat casino during my playthrough on Dragon Quest 8 today.

Didn't think I'd ever see the highest win on it.

I had a Cureslime, but no King Cureslime.

I should play my save some more... #lazybastard

Up until March, I was obsessed with getting 1/128 equipment in EarthBound. The number of batttles needed to get a piece of equipment ranged from 60 (a Star pendant) to 263 (a Goddess ribbon). Yes, call me crazy because I actually tallied my encounters for the equipment. I even managed to get a second Goddess ribbon from a Ghost of Starman while hunting Bionic Krakens for a Gutsy bat.

I've heard about that trick before on GameFAQs but have never actually tried it out. Was it Enix or DeJap who programmed that into the game?

Since we're on Earthbound...

I managed to get the Sword of Kings on my first playthrough in only 20 minutes. I've never gotten it again since. One day though I'll find the legendary sword again...

Anyway, in DQ, the best examples I can think of is how I've managed to get multiple 777s in a row in a few games (namely 7 and 8).

IDK Who put it in, but I know it works. :slimeking:  I am really hoping that there is something similar in the DS release that we haven't found yet. I have a feeling that any such code would be linked to the nicknacks. As soon as I get the last one from Estark I am going to test some things out to see,

So the official guide book from Enix has a heart system which is 1/32 for 1 heart, 1/16 for 2 hearts and 1/8 for 3 hearts. Curer is 1/32. Both Kings are 1/32 chance. The only ones that do not have this heart system is of course Borongo , and the 5 in the under world.

I stand corrected, on the Another World pages of the guide it does show the heart probability. Do apologize.

I did get a second set of 777s on 8, but it wasn't in a row(But it did result in me meeting my token goal). The only rows I haven't got on them in 8 are bars and stop circles.

Somehow, I managed to get 777 on the 100 coin slots (DQ V, each 777= 10,000 coins) twice in about two minutes. What are the chances of that?
