What DQ character pisses you off the most?

Recommended Posts

I'm tired and don't have much time before I need to log off tonight, but a topic idea hit me.

What main DQ game main character do you hate? It needs to be a playable character, not a NPC or bit character.  Do you still get mad at Cristo and his AI (which I personally never had a problem with) or just about every character in DQVI (which I personally do).  What do they do that makes you want to push them into wagon and never take them out?  Who do you realize now that you wish was never in a DQ game?  I'm interested to hear from you all.  I'll probably go into depth later about the DQVI people, but until I wake and do that, who do you despise?

For me, it's Maribel. Her snooty, stuck up attitude rubs me the wrong way, not to mention just how much of a b(irch tree) she is to the hero and Kiefer. Her whining, her nagging, and her all around negativity just makes me want to slap her. I know she matures over time, but....

Only reason I kept using her in 7 was because of all the time I invested in her job class growth.

Expected a sea of Charmles posts.

I'm going to shock everybody when I say the one that pisses me off the most is Trode. I wish he was cursed with a missing tongue. So obnoxious.

Maribel is the type that tends to go one of two ways when she's older.  1) She grows up, respects the man she loves because he's a badass, and she loves him for it, even if she flung and occasionally flings poo at him, and will defend him to the death.  2) She becomes more and more childish as she gets older, and more demanding, and this typically occurs if the man she married becomes less and less mannish, and more and more a shell of his former self, causing a painful cycle of resentment and regret.

Given the Hero, my guess is, if he didn't end up with the Princess...or one of the many other girls who no doubt would jump all over his bones, Maribel, who clearly DOES have a crush on him, will become the former, given his personality tends to be strong, resilient, and unyielding.  Maribel also has that lively spice that makes for a very aggressive woman between the sheets.  I'd say, since he's likely the only man who could tame her and make her satisfied, Arus would have one heck of a honeymoon he won't forget.

Oh yes, she's in love with him.  No doubt about it.

I love Maribel as well, since I know the type, and I know the likely potential attitude she'll take in a few years, as she can't hide her feelings behind her sass and chastising the only guy she finds worthy.

I love how Horii has a taste for redheads!  My man.  Alena, Ashlynn, Maribel, and Jessica!

Plus, she makes battle chat SOOO interesting.  The others are always nice, even Aira, but not Maribel.  She'll even scoff and scold the enemy!  She's almost as fun to read as Gabo.  Almost, and I'd be sad if she wasn't the fiery little vixen she is.

Ahem....so, my least favourite character?

That's a hard one.  There really aren't any I can think of that I dislike.  Bianca in the DQ5 DS remake, however, this is unfair, as my negative sentiment stems solely from the translators decision to alter her dialect to one of a hillbilly, which makes no sense, since Whitey speaks plainly, there are tons of tourists, and even those living in the town she moved to speak nothing like her, so there's literally NO reason for her alteration in dialect from childhood to adult, except perhaps to bother the user just enough to break the spell of guilt-trip-o-rama and feel it acceptable to take Nera, or chance Deborah, leaving Bianca to a fate of loneliness.

I guess for genuine dislike, for the character, not due to a forced error on the part of the translators...Trode.  He means well, he cares deeply for his daughter and his kingdom, but he's an $#!&$#! who rarely recognizes the value of his faithful servant until the very end, and even then, only in light of the Hero uncovering his past in the post-game.

Oh, I guess Trode doesn't really count, given he is not an active party member.

Angelo, but not for who he is personally.  His backstory was well conceived, and his development was excellent, and altogether saw the most growth out of all the characters, due to his ability to completely forgive his brother, even after Marcello tried to kill him, then threatened to while being saved, and scoffed at and spit on...forget all the history of unwarranted abuse and cruelty, for simply being born.

No, it's Angelo's game construction that bothers me.  His lack of any really good AoE's until Swords are finished.  Bows are...interesting, but ultimate fall short of swords, and swords for Angelo falls short of the Hero.  His Staff skills leave everything to be desired, and fisticuffs only offer a defense boost, while his best AoE isn't as effective until very late game, when it's damage output is still poo.  All of this to balance him out and make that undesirable forced skill "Divine Intervention" a serious contender as his only use outside of healing.  Even then DI still sucks, isn't as worth the effort, despite how early it becomes available, and it's presence and his nerfing to a backstop in party mechanics is the whole reason to allow for Resistance Table A.  My dreaded nemesis and the most profane and evil concoction any game has ever developed.  That it's in a DQ bothers me tremendously, and no, I don't forget about details like this.

Maribel is mah waifu

Dude, she's like 16.

The man was about 16 when the game came out ;).  Ah, those were the days.  You were but a sparkle in the eye of your mum, not yet a teen, and perhaps just learning to tie your shoe.

It's not much different than a man who remembers his first crush back in middle school, and wonders what would've happened had things been slightly different.  Sure, she picked her nose, and yelled a lot, and threw tantrums if you didn't give your cookies to her, but she was your waifu back in 5th grade damnit!

In all seriousness though, it really isn't much different than looking back, since if she were real, she would be older as well.  It's also a note on the personality types of a woman a man tends to prefer.  Some like'em hot and spicy.  Some cool and collected.  Others homespun and calmly...and there are so many other types of women.  Ah, this does bring me back to those days of Enix's return, and the old days when I was 19 and had a crush on Maribel.  Oh yeah, I did...she reminded me of someone I did like a LOT.  She was a redhead too.  So I can relate.

What I'm saying is, don't take it too literally in that manner, it's not meant in that way.  Even if so, in the sense that she represents a type of female that is preferred is not crossing any boundaries.  Now, if he were to make fanfiction of Maribel at her age, and him much much older, at his own age.  Ok, then sure, time for a police call, a raid, and some questions to the sanity of the man, but I don't see any reason for that in this case.

Let's see...if Maribel were to be real, and would've aged.  We can replace her with someone that looks a bit like Emma stone.

Hands down: Deborah Briscoletti  from DQ5 DS.  I still married her in my playthrough, just to see what egotistic garbage she'd sling, and to get a slightly better spellcaster daughter but aside from humorously annoying dialogue and minmaxing offspring, did she really have any redeeming factors?  Not that I could see.

To me the most annoying character, even though it is not technically a main character it is playable, that damned Dancing Jewel from DQ5 SFC. He is like the Magikarp of the DQ kingdom useless. He does have some powerful attacks if you bother leveling him up, but why bother? And that grin....wanna steal his jewels and go buy a decent PC...

Playable - Tough. Sancho is slower than molassas in January. So is the Brownie. Cristo's defeat is worthless on the NES version of DQIV.

"In the party" - Not technically playable, but Prince Charmless. If I was in the Argon heart party, he'd be kneecapped.

Enemy - Gold Batboon from DW2NES. "Gold Batboon chants Sacrifice. Thou art dead"

Ah, redheads. I have such a weakness for redheads that I'm married to one.

Maribel is one of my favorite characters. Seeing her and Kiefer go at it in party chat (with Gabo getting an occassional deadpan wolf zinger in) makes me laugh. Mentare/Verdham had the best party chat in the game.

Some of the highlights.

-----------------------------

Kiefer - That serving wench really did love Iwan.
Maribel - You just figured it out? What an idiot. I knew about it from the start.
Gabo - Don't ask me. Women confuse me.

--------------------------------------

Maribel - My clothes are drenched. This is all Dave's fault. All of it.
Kiefer - Shut up Maribel. Know your place fisherman's daughter. You're like a little kid.
Maribel - Oh shut up you halfwit. I'm not one of your subservient wenches.

------------------------------------------

Maribel - You and the prince need to give Pepe a good talking to.
Kiefer - Do it yourself.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Gabo - So Balrock is the male version of Maribel?
Maribel - Gabo! I heard that you nasty boy! How in the world could a pretty girl like me become anything like a feeble disgusting old man like that?
Gabo - Yikes, you heard me? I didn't mean it!

------------------------------------------------

Yes, it's obvious Maribel has a thing for the hero. ------------------

Kiefer – Think about it. This place is crawling with nothing but women. Wouldn’t you want to live in a place like this? (Yes) Eh Heh Heh. Isn’t that the truth. If we lived here, I bet we’d be real popular.
Maribel – Hold it right there Kiefer, Don’t you lead Dave down the path of unfulfilling hedonistic excess.

------------

Maribel - Dave (Hero), it's amazing that you always create your opinions independent of reason. She's not even all that attractive.
--------------
Maribel - I understand helping small children, furry animals, and even the elderly, but it's so infuriating when you out of your way to lend a hand to young ladies, Dave.

-----------------

After the princess makes a move on the hero...

Maribel - "Dave, you're face is all red. What the hell were you doing in there, you jerk?"

Well, since some people are throwing in non-playable characters and monsters, I'll chime in as well on that front:

Non-playable: The young prince in DQ6. Sadly his name escapes me right now, but he is the young prince who you have to escort into the cave. The little bastard keeps you running back and forth from the cave to the castle to find him. It's a never ending game of hide and seek with a little whining brat.

Monster: Belial from DQ8. These yellow devils are a nuisance in 8's post game. Strong abilities, a good punt of HP, and often appearing in groups of 2 or 3 (along with other enemies in some cases), these guys have been the death of me on a few bad instances in 8's post game.

100% agree on him. I never even wanted him in my party. I wish he was optional like Amos; I'd skip him in a heartbeat.

Where'd you get the notion that the daughter becomes a better spellcaster if you marry Deborah?  This is false.  The daughter and son have identical stats/equipment/spell lists regardless of whom you marry, and this is true for all versions of DQV.

Deborah is the most physical, and can equip the Hela Hammer, the 50/50 crit/miss weapon in DQV (only version that IS 50/50, until DQ7's remake anyway, where it has an upgraded version that I don't recall if it's cursed.  I have to check my notes.).  Anyway, this makes her indispensable in battle, given only a bare handful of monsters can even use it, and none of them hit level 99 that I recall, but the point is, she makes a useful tool for leveling off MKS and grinding out Metal Slime and Liquid Metal Slimes for recruiting purposes.

Oh, and don't forget, she DOES totally shift her gear in the end, and while still has some sass, definitely shows appreciation and affection for the strength inherent in her husband, making it clear no other man could ever capture her heart...and that she actually has one.  Heck, she even shows traits of motherly affection in Gen 3.  Still, I totally get why you don't like her, especially considering Bianca's attitude of always loving you and wanting to do everything for you, and Nera's attitude of always wanting to be the good wife who is a little naughty at times.  Oh yes, Nera = naughty.

Prince charmless,i hate him...my god,that stupid child...

Hmm, I guess we're moving on from active party members to non-party members.  Though yes, Charmles was frustrating beyond belief.  I wouldn't mind seeing a remake where, if you get the good ending, it allows the player a post-post game scenario, where Charmles as King of Argonia, seeks war with Trodain, now run by the Hero and Medea.  Then, in an Earthbound like moment, his massive bulk gets absorbed into the Abyss, after some events, and he becomes DQ's version of Poke Minch (and technically a rebirth of the same type of monster that was the big red Russian in DQV), and returns in a new game sometime later as a boss to kill.

Ah, redheads. I have such a weakness for redheads that I'm married to one.

Yeah, the first girl I ever fell for was a redhead.  Heck, back in the day, as a kid, there were only two movies I saw in theater more than twice.  Jurassic Park, and The Little Mermaid.  Jurassic Park I saw 9 times, because I loved dinosaurs (half the books I owned were dino books), and The Little Mermaid 7 or 8 times...all due to Ariel.

How-ard the duck (couldn't pass it up)......  (The parts of the 80's I'd like to forget). That character was about as "good" as the movie.
