Contest #119-Dragon Quest's Most Notable Quotables 3!

Recommended Posts

It's contest time again, and this time were doing something a bit different. This contest requires no art skill, no technical skills and there is no purchase required! We are on a hunt for Dragon Quest's most noteworthy quotes.

DQ8_22.png

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to identify some of the most interesting or funny quotes that you have come across while playing a Dragon Quest game. Truly, the series is a veritable gold mine of classic lines and witticisms.

Each quote that is submitted must provide a bit more info than just the words that are spoken. We also need context. As such, submitted quotes should include:

1) The quote itself (obviously)
2) Who said it
3) To whom it was said (if applicable)
4) Under what circumstances did the quote take place
5) The game it comes from

For example, for the above pictured quote, you could submit something like the following:

"Me? Hearing my name is enough to make anyone wet their knickers!"
- Spoken by Yangus to King Trode as the party tries to pass across "Yangus' bridge" in Dragon Quest VIII.

And what would any contest be without some good old fashioned ground rules? So here they are!

Rules:
1) "But Thou Must!" will not be accepted for this contest
2) Any of the previously submitted quotes will not be accepted(I have a complete list, so I will check and let you know if it has been previously submitted)
3) You may submit up to three quotes each(if you submit one that was previously submitted, it will not count as one of your three)
4) You can submit quotes from the English version of any Dragon Quest main-series or spin-off game
5) In the event that two or more people submit the same quote, the first person to submit it will get to claim it
6) Submit your quotes to me via Private Message
7) You have until Sunday, September 28th, 2014 @ 12:00 PM MST to contribute your submissions

Once all of the submissions have been gathered, the community will vote on which ones are the best. The three people who submit the top three quotes will receive a badge. Furthermore, all submitted quotes will be used by Woodus to update the "Quote of the month" feature here at the Den.

That's it! Start your engines and get those hilarious or interesting quotes sent in before it's too late!

This seems like a cool contest. Couple of quick questions for you though.

Do we have to submit all 3 quotes at the same time, or for example could I send you right now and send the other 2 tomorrow?

And this is probably a stupid question, but how accurate do the 5 requirements need to be? For example I know the quote, the person that said it and who it was said to, and the game. But don't quite remember the circumstances for the quote and can't seem to find it short of playing the better part of game again.

You can submit one at a time if you want and try to be as accurate as you can with the 5 requirements. I'll judge it in the pm, but chances are that you'll be fine.

First batch of quotes:

"What? All of the villagers disappeared? Don't be silly! The village might be small, but there's no way something like that could happen! Did you take some bad Herb, or something?"-Woman asking hero if he has visited Avon in DWVII

"I’ve failed to bring peace… Forgive me, your wretched father… Urggah!"-Ortega's final words in DQ 3 GBC

We need some serious quotes to mix in with the humorous ones. Dragon Quest's most dramatic lines are the most memorable!

No question that that's a great line though.  It's what makes DQ7's script so awesome.

I ask that people read the rules and follow them. Also, the quote list I have is being a little temperamental (it may just be my laptop), so please bear with me if it takes me a bit longer than usually for submissions.

I personally don't mind it, but as a community are we OK with having that kind of language on the front page anyways? I think "$#!&@" is censored on the board anyways.

EDIT: Yes, it is.

I would like to thank Woodus for making a page of all the quotes. You can now check for yourself to see if the quote has been submitted. To anyone who may have submitted a quote and I have not yet posted it here yet, I will be doing that tomorrow.

Here's the link to the quotes page: http://www.woodus.com/den/resources/notable_quotables.php

Going through that list, I've noticed it looks like a lot of those quotes don't appear on the front page of the Den at all.

Yeah, I thought that too, the app I borrowed code from may not be working as expected, I may have to rebuild it to work like I did with the quiz questions, a counter on each item and select the lowest used counter.

Sorry for the delay. Here are the latest batch of quotes:

"Hwa ha ha ha hah! You will writhe in the unbearable agony of these thorns forever!" - Spoken by Dhoulmagus to the party as he conjures thousands of whips from his staff in Dragon Quest VIII.

"Persistence is not a virtue! Something you obviously never learnt. Allow me to educate you." - Spoken by Marcello to the party at Neos in Dragon Quest VIII.

"Remember, together it is possible to break even an elm. Together, you can overcome even the strongest evil." - Marta's advice to the party in Dragon Quest VIII.

"If it got really, really cold, do you think a slime might stop wobbling about and go all hard like a stone? Tee hee hee!
That'd be fun! I wish we could try it!" - After getting the herald of spring, talk to slime in Fairie Lea, then party chat with Honey in Dragon Quest V

"Then I'll put down a thousand G that says he doesn't! H-Hey! I was only joking! Don't look at me like that. You're scaring me." - Harry in Fortuna casino after talking to bartender, betting about whether the hero will show up in Dragon Quest V

"....... Sometimes I just don't have anything to say, that's all. It doesn't necessarily mean I'm in a mood.
I just don't feel like talking to you. Of course, sometimes that's because I am in a mood. so you'd better just stay on your toes." - Deborah, in overworld during generation 2 in Dragon Quest V

"D-Dear Goddess... Please lend me your strength... For the sake of my dear son, [Hero]..." - Mada's plea to the Goddess in Dragon Quest V

"...I remember. Everything you ever told me lives on inside my heart. Forgive me, Sasha. ...I've finally opened my eyes. I'm sorry for being so sad and lonely." - King Pavan, after the memories of his beloved Sasha helped him recover from his sadness in Dragon Quest VIII

"You will writhe in the unbearable agony of these thorns forever!" - Dhoulmagus, after being defeated for the first time and attempting to trap the party in thorns in Dragon Quest VIII

Glad to see a lot of serious quotes in this batch.

This batch of quotes brings up an interesting aspect of this we haven't evidently encountered before.  Spoilers.  I know it is a contentious issue as to whether or not we need to mark spoilers on these forums for games that are older than a few years, but since these quotes will be posted on a regular basis at the top of the forums, I wonder if we want to allow ones like where Mada is struck down by Nimzo, or how Marta sacrifices herself.

Also, is it just me, or do the first and last quotes in this recent batch bear a very striking resemblance to each other?

They are. It looks like the only difference is Dhoulmagus' laughter.

And I guess mentioning the quotes may contain spoilers is fair enough. You have to accept that a list of quotes will have some level of spoilers and this is a site dedicated to single series so when you visit it's important to remember that there are spoilers behind every corner.

Good point, KZ. In lieu of an omission, I think a rewording of the captions to keep things a bit more vague could also suffice, i.e. "Mada's plea to the Goddess in DQV", or "Marta's advice to the party in DQVIII".

I'm with Eal with respect to including more dramatic lines as opposed to strictly humorous, but I can see where it's hard to caption some of those without giving too much away.

You mean the quiz doesn't actually take any of your answers into account? Awwww...

Yes it does, I just mean so the same questions don't come up each time, they all get a pass thru the quiz display

That sounds like a good compromise to me.  I think the spoiler is effectively managed by amending the descriptive text as you have suggested.

Batch o' quotes:

"There is one thing which an adventurer must never do upon any account... And that is to force this noble application to close." - Written by Tutorio Lerngood in the Traveler's Tips section of DQ1 for Mobile

"Canst thou not see that I am engaged in the changing of my petticoats!? Begone, thou lascivious knave, lest I call the guard!" - Spoken by a woman in Rimuldar when the Hero enters her house.  DQ1 for Mobile

"Lumme! Then I have mistaken our trysting place yet again? Verily I am doghouse-bound!" - Spoken by Roderick in Rimuldar after the Hero tells him that his girlfriend is waiting for him in the other corner of town.  DQ1 for Mobile

I can arrange that edit. Which ones do y'all think should have the edit?

I've got more than 3 quotes. Can I submit the three I think would most likely win, but also submit the others to the list without entering them to the contest? (If someone else were to submit the extras after I did, they'd get the credit for them.)
