Gigglepuffy 5
In Dragon Quest X, you have two options for pet vocations. The traditional Monster Tamer (sometimes referred to as Beastmaster) and its counterpart Item Master (sometimes referred to as Tool User). The screenshots in this guide will be from the latter, but the monster raising is the same mechanic for either. The specifics of how either job is played won't be covered, but the surface difference between their monsters is that Tamer uses organic beasts such as Slimes, Slimes, and Slimes. Item Master uses inorganic creatures that are enchanted objects, or mechanical such as Goodybags, or Golems, and so on. From looking over the skills, Tamer seems to have more support oriented beasts, while Item Tamer has more damaging fellas. It's The specific monster list is as follows Tamer Slime Momon (Teeny Sanguini) Purizunyan (Candy Cat) Heal Slime Slime Knight Chimera Nekomadou (Meowgician) Lizardman Mischevious Mole Battle Rex (Hacksaurus) Baby Satan (Imp) Baby Dragon (Small Fry) DRACKY!!!!!!!!!!! Item Master Metappi (Meena) Takeya Rihei Goodybag Needleman Golem Rogue Knight Fondue Magical Hat Entashisuman (Dancing Pillar) Mud Mannequin Killer Machine Yami Shibare (it's like a new monster, bondage ghost? has counter skills?? KINDA UGLY) Unlocking the Jobs + Capturing I will expand this section if necessary, but this has been talked about elsewhere so at the moment I'll lay the basics down. Both vocations are very quick unlocks. Monster Tamer requires a pre-requisite of 30 unique enemies killed, but otherwise you can run up and immediately unlock it so long as you've been Level 20, have completed the quest to change jobs, and own the expansion pack. Simply leave Olfea (the Puklipo "capital") from the West exit, and make your way to the cave zone on the east end of the map. Inside will be an NPC named Kuroha. Speak to her a few times, get your job. Item Master is unlocked by clicking the teleporter in the Gatara ruins (southeast of the first major Dwarf city of the same name). You must have a monster manual purchased from the pet section of the tavern for Item Master before you go in, or you won't be able to complete the quest. You will be asked by the cute wardrobe inside to viciously murder Skullaroos and Gachakokos (metal Meena birds, silver). Return to him to unlock. Monster Manuals are an important part of scouting. You must read a monster manual before you can scout an enemy for your use. The tavern sells a bunch, but others must be acquired through lottery, the Casino, or different means. Once you use the monster manual, you will use your Scout ability on that very monster with the exact same name, so if you can't read Japanese, make sure you make a note of how it's spelled before you chase after a color palette swap. Once you use the ability once in battle against them (you won't be able to use Scout period if it's not the right enemy), you need only kill them. Upon defeat, if you capture them, they will appear on the map to be spoken to. Then, you name them. Then, they're yours. (I will detail the menu options in the tavern another time) Outfitting Your Buddy On this screen, you'll notice stats and a few options you can glance through. Starting from the cursor down, you can see: - Equipment - Dress Up - Set which skills you want them to be able to use - The skill building menu itself - Set Tactics The first two options are what I'll talk about first. Equipment works much the same way your own does. You can fully equip your tamed monsters with weapons and armor, which definitely helps them out. Each monster has one weapon type it can wield, such as Slimes using boomerangs (and boy does this never stop being cute!), or Goodybag using fans. As you can see above, my Metappi "Dyna" uses claws! She stores them on her wings and slips into them in combat, which is precious. Below you can see Chuchu, who uses a slime wand which is like, something I'm really gonna miss when she outgrows it. Make sure that your monster can equip a gear before you buy, or craft, anything. Cycle the equipment menu three screens and you'll encounter which monsters can and can not wear something. This claw below can only be worn by The option to dress them up is its own separate, cosmetic entity. Using crafting ingredients at the tavern, you're able to make hats and bows and things that show up and accessorize your creature. Other than equipped weapons, these are the only other things that will show up on your buddies. Once you've created an accessory, it's stored in the menu to be swapped in and out at will. Raising Your Pal Well, so Friend #1 has got their equipment and maybe a silly bow on. But that's not really the big meat of raising right? What about growth, skills! This is where pets get even more fun. In the first cycle of your pet (reincarnation is something I'll mention later), they will have only access to three types of skills. They all follow a basic pattern, sometimes personalized a little, with the names all differentiating based on the creatures. They are almost always Offensive Skills, Support Skills, and Weapon Skills. You'll see a lot of the iconic attacks from the enemies in one of these. If you have reincarnated your monster at level 50, you gain access to a bunch of skills related to stat raising, and further reincarnations give access to other abilities. On that note, at monster happiness/tameness level 100 you gain the ability to take them with you regardless of job. What the offensive and support skills are depends on the enemy type (obviously Heal Slimes are heavy on healing, but Golems are heavy on demolishing so their support skills will be buffs instead, etc). I'm of the opinion that crossing between two skills at once can be pretty handy, although specializing in one (the way you would your own passive at first) is a good idea too, since those 40 point skills tend to be pretty damn good. Gaining access to them early might just be a smart idea. No pressure, I can't imagine you can mess up a build that badly. Your New Friend In Combat You will gain access to an ability called Petting, or Tune-Up, shortly into your job passive skill line. This gives you a great two minute buff to your partner, as well as Psyching them up. Outside of that, your battles are mostly self-explanatory. Speaking only of your partners. The AI controls your monster and you set Tactics to guide them. When in a pet vocation, your bottom menu option in combat will be a Tactics button where you can see Equipment and Change Tactics on the fly. These tactics are basically as follows. - "Let's klobber 'em" with no care to MP. - Use attacks, but be mindful of MP. This is FIGHT WISELY in DQ localization and is the default and yeah it's usually pretty wise about how it handles stuff! - A general tactic. Use attacks and spells, will heal when you hit a certain threshold of low health percentage. Don't rely on it for support if things are dangerous, because it can be finnicky. - HEAL. HEAL. HEAL. HEAL. HEAL. HEAL. - Conserve MP absolutely. - Your pet will leave the fighting to you entirely, but they will support you. While you have a pet "out", you can also hide them from party participation period using this button. Their icon in the party sidebar will vanish and you will have space. Simply click it again to bring them back. --- This is all aimed at newcomers for the most part, to give an idea of what these jobs do. If anyone who's been playing this much longer than I have wants me to add in information, please tell me! I have more I can add in for sure and this was kind of a rush job, done on the spot inbetween playing the game today, so I'm sure I missed something worth adding in. Murd 3
Thanks for your excellent guide for the class!! The Monster tamer is very unique class for DQ series. I really enjoyed DQ5 because being able to tame monster to form your party. Really glad that DQ X brings my joy back!
PantheonSasuke 73
Robots are awesome, so if I ever get the opportunity to play this I'd probably try to get that item master vocation as soon as possible. Killing machines and those bamboo dudes are cool, and I suppose the mecha-mynahs are cute in their own goofy way I remember reading about this powerful magic cannon attack they can have as a recruited monster. Oh, and a question: just how many times are you able to reincarnate the monster? I'm guessing you can't do it enough to max out all the monster's skill trees, what with balancing and variance and such? And thanks for the awesome guide, yo. From what you state, this seems like less of a luck-based hassle than some of the previous games way of handling taming / recruitment.
Ashes 52
You can reincarnate 5 times. Each time you reincarnate you can pick two additional trees. You only get 5 at any point in time. After reincarnating the first time your pet can wear any level gear. So at lv1+1 (the +# indicates the number of reincarnations) your pet can wear lvl 80 gear even if you can't. In addition, your pet gets a bit of a star boost each time you reincarnate and it resets it's stats back to lvl 1 plus those boosted stats. Also, she mentioned that once pet lvl reaches 100 you can bring it with you. The stat is better referred to as tameness or happiness. I'm the pet stat window it's 3 lines below the level. That pet's happiness is 17. There's also a 110 sp skill in both vocations that makes happiness increase faster. Happiness growth occurs at the end of battle randomly. It's more likely to happen the higher level monsters you fight. There are other theories, but higher level creatures and the 110 skill are your two most valuable ways to increase happiness. Ashes 52
Oh you get monster hearts by having a house, and the monster area for your house. Then pet it once a day. Other people can pet your monster too. This will then lead to your monster leaving you a present every 2-3 days in the area. When you open it you'll get a crafting material and some hearts depending on how much it was petted once a day. This said when you visit someone's house you should pet their monster and water their grass whenever you go to their house - once a day.
Shoryia 9
Ugh this guide is awesome Gigglepuffy! Reading this is pushing me further and further into purchasing this wonderful game. Taming beasts sounds and looks like a lot of fun
krw703 39
I made mention of this in another topic, but since I'm getting questions about it... How to train your monster from base happiness to the cap really quick! Of course when we get a new monster, we want to train them until they can travel with us regardless of our class! Because, y'know, what's the point of having them if they're going to shun us the second we stop being a Tamer/Item Master? Plus look at that flexing. Healslimes are buff I tells ya! No really, get them a support tree and they have tons of buffs What you need: 1. Any class at the level cap OR friends/team members at the cap for Battle Master and Priest. (Psst, you have access to these. Just ask. I'm better than a majority of the Battle Masters you'd get on hire plus I can add in my hirameki belt so you can do longer training sessions without needing to inn.) 2. Access to 2.1 is ideal. The best spot to raise them is available in 2.1, and the 120 SP cap is unlocked through 2.1 which allows you access to the 110SP skill for your respective class that makes training monsters twice as fast. The target: http://www.d-quest-10.com/detail/a00207.html (Bustin' internet Trolls all day long y'all!) Recommended hunting locations: - Outside of 2.1's Seredo village (the town next to Dharma Temple, or the second option from the carriage at the main castle). Set ruura in town and you literally just have to walk out of town to find them. - Top left corner of Glen East. Set your ruura at the Lion's Gate map (the one north of Glen East) and go from there. This spot is pretty far away. Nothing else to really mention about this. Just fight Trolls, they have low defense so you and your monsters will be able to damage them easily, fairly low HP, they provide stamps if your tamer/Item Master is at the cap and higher level enemies seem to increase your monster's happiness a lot more often. Estimated time: 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 hours to reach the cap from ~10 happiness (monsters start with around 8 to 12) or about 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 without the 110 SP skill. After that you can use them on any class, or put them in reserve to power level them while you grind other classes.
Murd 3
Just wonder if your tamed pet will take one slot for your party. Example, a full party of 4 members can only have you, your pet, and other 2 members. Am I correct?

Polantaris 2
I have a quick question in regards to monster taming. I've seen people walk around with GIGANTIC versions of a normal monster. For example, the other day I saw someone with a Dragon Kid that was practically twice as tall as I was. What exactly causes this? Does it have any effect on their stats, or is it purely visual? Basically, from the Dwarf Capital: Go East (out of the capital), South, then there's a cave at the top left of the map that they're in. I don't have names off hand, sorry. They're like Lv.40 or 50 mobs, if not higher.

What else is there really to know? - No level restrictions on gear after the 1st reincarnation - They get 10 extra SP per reincarnation - They get a fixed stat increase every reincarnation (you can compare their lv1 to lv1+1 stats to see the difference. They'll get the same amount per reincarnation) - You get to choose up to 2 more skill trees to use. 1 after 1, 2 after that. The skill trees are located here: http://ドラクエ10.jp/dq10_mamono_tensei.html And Polantaris, that Dragon Kid thing you saw was just the 40 SP skill in their first tree.
