DQVIII Progress - Summer '14

Recommended Posts

Waiting on that multiheal. Just 1 more level. 1 more level.

After about 10 hours (yes, 10) of roaming around the world, finding chests and infamous monsters, I'm back to the main story.

Hunting argon lizard hearts. Didn't go well (got lost) this morning. I'm off to go move my 30 boxes of stuff from one classroom to another. Hope I get more play time later today.

I've just reached the Riverside Chapel.  I have to say, this game needed the instant-alchemy change.  Alchemy went from something that was laborious and annoying to something that is actually useful.  Admittedly, it is really easy to abuse now, but I like having a streamlined DQ8 experience.

So far, my impressions are that I much prefer this version.  Maybe I am just sick of the voice acting after ripping all of those cut-scenes, but I love to just quickly read the sentence and burn through those scenes without feeling like I should have taken longer to listen to the VA all the way through.

I'm loving it and looking forward to playing it each day.  I'm happy to take my time and make this play-through last a while.

Boy do I know that feeling. With the HQ rip, I'm up to the first arrival at Baccarat. But ripping is definitely slowed down at 4x internal res ("Iiiiii aaaalllssssooo hhheeeeaaarrrddd tttthhhhhaaattt Cccccaaaassshhhhh aaaaannnndddd Ccccaaaaarrrrrrriiiieee..."). On mobile, I'm only up to Ascantha. The VA definitely made DQ8 a much more real experience back in '05. But knowing the story (and the VA), I too concede that it's nicer just zipping through the on-screen text on mobile.

I'm a little bit past Empycchu but I'm stuck at the boss.

I can't find a proper place to grind.. the little island south west of the Dessert Chapel has LMS but they have run away from me each time I find one.

Grinding in this game is seriously killing the experience for me, it makes me really sad to say that. I had no problem doing it in the other Dragon Quest games for some reason.

Also, having the maps, both work and dungeon instantly available is helpful too.

Damn game just reset on my while fighting Evil Jessica.  I was close to the end too!  UGH!

Only the 5th time it's crashed in the 50 hours I've played it, but this was the most annoying!  Oh, and I have some VA VA VOOM pics to share soon :whoa:

Don't want to look for KMS in the Dragon Graveyard?  I just met one on the 5th or 6th battle.  Defeated it and one level up per character!  I think I haven't had to grind because I've been spending SO much time walking around everywhere.

Soul, I don't know, I feel much the same about DQ8 and farming/grinding.  I have few problems in 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, even 9.  8 for some reason gives me a gut feeling like I'm ripping my insides out.  Though like Platty I find it's easier to stay ahead of the curve by just wandering everywhere, all the time, since that seems to mitigate the sensation as I'm attempting to explore every nook and cranny, even though I already have half the maps memorized, lol.

Platty...*claps, sheds tears*.  That was awesome.

I had the equipment.

It was coming eventually. Specially considering the 99:1 Male:Female ratio here.. lmfao

I need a break from technological life. Bad things happen in 3s, right?

1. The power button on the side of my phone broke. There are other methods for turning it on and off, but it's a pain. And my dad screwed up our upgrade schedule, so I may have to deal with this for a long while.

2. My home computer won't turn on. My son was pounding on the keyboard and shut it down yesterday. Now it won't come on. Windows forever pretends it's loading, and the safe mode won't work either. Ugh.

3. Then there's this: upu5u2ap.jpg

Good, right? Nope, that screenshot crashed the app. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

(edit) Ok, to be fair, I did win two 100, 000 jackpots in the 20 mins after posting. Everyone has liquid metal armor right now and I have a Falcon Blade. So, the least important thing got fixed. Working on the computer now.

I am stunned over the fact that someone can beat Empyrea and somehow get stuck on any of the much easier bosses after her.

Pretty much all the bosses are a joke if you can beat Dhoulmagus and Empyrea. I guess the final boss might be an exception. Might. I actually had more problems with the baby form personally. All those one hit criticals are annoying as hell.

Oh ya, his baby form is definitely the harder battle.  He might hit more often in his fatty mcdonut-munchin' form, but he isn't as threatening, dangerous, or as difficult.

The only positive I can see with the lack of VA, is no one will be forced to listen to the grating, underwhelming, and annoying voice of the Big Bad.

Speaking of annoying, I haven't been wiped out since my first hour.  Then I go and get all my characters the liquid metal slime armor (ended up with ~600,000 casino coins today in 2 hours - the 100 coin slot machine is WAY easier in this version.  WAY more generous!!!)  So, the first infamous monster I come across is the Blizzard enemy up north.  First round he Thwacks my entire group.  I hadn't saved in a bit, so 5000 gold gone.  I go back to take him out.  I get through a few rounds & he Thwacks 3/4 of my party.  Seriously!!??  Is his spell supposed to have an 88% success rate!?

I can't kill KMS, all my characters are to slow for it. My party wasn't designed to fight metal slimes in the first place.. minus Yangus.

Hero:Boomerang, Yangus: Axe, Jess:Staff, Ang:Bow

So I decided I'll grind the old way

I really can't explain why the grinding feels like such a chore in this game to me.

It's a shame, it's killing the experience a bit.

That's my build primarily, Yangus killed all King Metals. I'm ready for my hero to step it up, he's sitting on a mountain of skill points.

I was just playing this, and then I switched to another app.  I forgot that if you didn't save your game it basically restarts the DQVIII game when you start up another app.  Good thing I didn't get too far.  This game isn't too good when multi-tasking.

Yeah, you gotta watch that.

Actually when I booted the game tonight I got an auto-recovery save notification.  I then tried to take a few screenshots and accidentally kicked myself out of the app (holding the hybernate/power button too long.)  I loaded DQVIII up again and got the auto-recovery again.

It's weird, because the first time this happened I don't remember getting any sort of auto-recovery save.  Nice to know I have it, but I wonder what triggers it and what doesn't.

Changing screens, when it has to load, it'll save.  Like if you're in a town & it has to load to go inside a building, or if you leave town, or enter a dungeon.  Whenever you have that pause & it loads, that's what I've gotten autosaves from.

There's a glitch with autosaves in Pickham. It's not game breaking or anything, but if you load an autosave from when you enter the casino, it will start to play the casino music and then switch to the town music once the room is loaded, even though you are inside the casino.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just reached Trodain castle (19 hrs in).  Took a bit of a diversion to do some Monster Arena-ing and just cleared D-rank.  Now I am off to plunder the aforementioned castle.  Loving every minute of this play-through.
