Ryu's Rants - DQIX.

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to rant on this title long. There are spoilers.

DQIX. The latest maintitle we got here in the US. Local multiplayer, spotpass, the works. We even got a pretty decent advertising campaign.

But that's not why I'm ranting on it. I have three specific problems with this title.

1. The Story. The story to me was extremely lacking compared to other DQs. You get the Fyggs, then beat the big bad. That's essentially it. The endgame is similar to lower-end MMOs, basic quests and a lot of grinding. It's meh. Especially compared to DQ4-6.

2. DQVC. Really? I have to go on the internet with this title to unlock quests post-game? Should've left it for shops. My old DSi when I had it (( The system I played DQIX on )) did -not- connect to the internet off my router. My solution for this, and tagging? My old CycloDS and the save editor. Which I still advocate to this day. (( I remember a lot of arguments on "cheating". :D ))

3. Multiplayer. This was a decent enough game to warrant some kind of online multiplayer. Would've been awesome to play with Denners. But nope, never turned out. >:(

DQIX was in my eyes, DQX's testing ground. It was a decent MMO-wannabe, but in my eyes, and to this day, they should've left it out of the DQ series in general. I don't mind a lot of the puns in it, the only thing I minded was in the other re-releases, and that was some of the spellnames that left me with a sizzling hatred.

This right here, is my new favorite topic. I absolutely can't stand IX for pretty much everything it is (excluding the soundtrack) and stands for, and I agree that the game was essentially testing grounds for X.  I could go on about why I DESPISE this game, but the easiest way to some it up is this:

It didn't feel like a Dragon Quest game.

For a long time I hated IX with a passion... then I got another copy and remembered that I enjoyed the main game :P That post-game, though...

But yeah, the first and third points you make ring true to me. While DQ games generally tell individual stories on top of a larger one, IX almost seems to focus too much on the individual ones while the primary is left a little lacking. The multiplayer could potentially distract from that, but like you say, there wasn't really any online aspect to it, only local, and it feels like a lot of DQ fans outside of Japan are spaced too far apart to get together and quest it up. That's the feeling I've got from the fans that come here, at least.

It really does feel like some sort of proto-MMO, and part of me wonders if some of the oversights they made were due to that. Mind, these are little things that probably don't bother too many folks, like defeated monster counts capping at 999 and skill points becoming useless after you master every set. Like, if they were going for an MMO / multiplayer feel, wouldn't these be things to expand on? Oh well. I'll just add in that I enjoyed the removal of random encounters because I prefer control over random bologna, but folks have their preferences and that's one of the things that's cool about IX: you can control how you play, you just might need more than one copy since the game's got too much stuff in it to have more than one save file.

I played through the game twice. First when it came out in japan, then once again when when it came out in English. I was one of the Grand prize winners of the contest nintendo of america held.

I love dq9. Im the first to admit it doesnt have the best story in the series, but I still liked the overall story and the town missions.

Playing this game multiplayer is amazing. I played through the japanese version by myself, but I played the american version almost entirely with two of my friends and it was an absolute blast. We had do much fun goofing off. I think I have about 400 hours between both versions.

Not to mention the cameos and legacy bosses were fun.

I agree. It's a great game if you have friends to play it with, but going solo not so much. :baa: (Says the guy who spent 999 hours in the game)

well what can i say i am in love with this game, i hail it as my favourite game of all time along side super mario 64.

But why?: well even though i would agree that the story isn't as good as the others due to its fragmented feel, also on that note that fact you're other party members don't have a back story was disapointing (at first atleast).

Now then the first thing that i enjoyed about ix it the fact thats its a top down rpg, i had big issues with the camera angle in  dq8 and that game is easily my least favourite and  what about the graphics do you like them?- because i think there perfect i can't realy explain it  to you better then that they just  work perfectly. The soundtrack is brilliant obviously.

The fact you can fully customise you're characters, something that every rpg should have in my view because it really helps to immerse you into the game which it what rpg's are about and Even though i was excepted random battles ix showed me tnat there is a better way, in which dodging monsters becomes a game in it self. But before a blable on lets face it i have 800+hrs logged in my first cart (all in single-player never played multiplayer) and with the amount of content in this game i have many many mores hours to play, what with getting every monster at 999 kills and perhaps i can clock out the grottoes completed clock and such....

But i couldn't play this game so much if the battle system wasn't up to scratch and i have to say that this game has the best battle system i have ever played with.

its just a shame dqx looks terrible, not the graphics so much , but i don't care about multiplayer and well i don't mind if we just skip x here in the west i can pretend i doesn't excised.

Couldn't stand the game and one playthough is enough for multiple reasons.

The puns. I couldn't take the game seriously when there were so many puns basically every 5 seconds. Puns and jokes are good and all, but sometimes you need to cut back a bit in order to have people take the game seriously

The lack of random encounters. I already posted all i needed to about this issue here

Local wireless play. While a good idea, in Japan since theres a huge amount of people who play DQ there. its not so much here. When I preoredred IX, i was the only one in my city to ask for it. The only time I have ever been able to play online was once at a convention about 3 years ago. It was fun, but i felt like i was missing out of a big portion of the game by not having the chance to play online with people.

The online store. I couldn't access it most of the time. The way my router was set up with its encryption i couldn't get onto the nintendo WFC unless I took down the password, kicked everyone off of the router, log onto the store, get the updated item list, put back up the password, kicking everyone off of the router again, then use the store. Not to mention that now that the WFC is being discontinued, people who do not have action replay or other cheating devices wont have access to those exclusive items, the guests or even the DLC missions.

One save. This is the biggest reason I have not played the game since i beat it. I spent a lot of time tagging people so i can get new maps, completing the DLC, grinding the legacy bosses, especially Nimzo so i could make my character look like Abel for a convention that i went to as Abel. I'm not going to erase that save after all the time i put into it. But i'm also not going to buy a new copy of the game, unless its dirt cheap because of my distaste for it. And i dont have anything that could move my save from the DS onto my computer. So i'm stuck. If I get the urge to play it I play from my last save and i forget where all of the grottos are, the higher end legacy bosses are a bit too tough for me because i forgot the strategy i used for them. So it makes it not fun for me.

I know its a big game so it might only be able to hold the one save, but that doesn't mean I can accept/like it.

It is NOT DLC of any kind. The quests are on the cartridge, and simply requires a flag be set to access them.

Hate.

the fact some quest are locked unless you connect to the internet is terrible for sure, but since they are all unlocked on my first cart i don't care personally - i am fine with my second cart being incomplete, but it is a shame for future gamers .

i never really used the online store i only brought the items you can only get from it then left it alone

Honestly the one time I did mess with the store, I got stuff I could use well enough, it had a Falcon Blade in the shop, so.

But I was in the same boat as Kalmana. I could -not- connect to WiFi at home, and nobody around had DQX. That's why I'm glad they largely left out Streetpass in DQ7, should it get here.

it certainly wasn't the series highest point in some aspects to be sure, but i did like it. though not my favorite, no the honor still is held by a two way tie between 5 and 7. i'm not one for MMO games so you can guess my feelings towards it, but i am also a sucker for collecting so it balances out i suspect.

I will admit I kinda agree with your points, but actually I didn't realize them nor care about them at the time I played. I will say I was very disappointed in the game for a lack of a casino. That pretty much sucked as it was such a part of the game series up until then.

;) I enjoyed Dragon Quest IX for what it's worth, after all I put 1100+ hours into the game but I have to say you raise some pretty valid points about the game as a whole. The story wasn't as epic as say Dragon Quest V and VIII's and the post game was nothing more than grinding really, good for a time sink though :D

The lack of a Casino doesn't bother me in the slightest as I never bother with those things in ANY RPG. I'm not a big fan of gambling in general but the DQVC was a HUGE pain in the butt, not being able to access certain content without WiFi really burned me big time and as for the Multiplayer, I never really experienced that as once again I had no WiFi and no one I knew that lived in my area had the game let alone a DS to play it on.

I can't and won't try to hide this game's problems.
ANd it's certainly not my favourite (I guess it would be V or VI (I haven't played to DQVII yet)).

And the only way I could access this game's secret missions was through Gameshark.

However... I love thsi game's world. All these ruins environment who hints to a greater story. All those great landscape to visit.

(That actually works with your theory of it as a proto-MMO)

This game is just really beautifull.

Not as much replayability as I would like, though

And I like the removal of random encounters. Makes level up actually easier, because hunting Metal Slimes becomes less a chore to do.

I started to find this really tedious at the time, so it was a nice change

It is a really uncomplete game, and certainly not the best of the serie, but I'm still fonds of it.

I don't think I made it clear before. I really loved DQIX. I sunk over 120 hours into it, making it my 2nd most played DS game. And probably in the top 3 of DQ. It was fun, and I did more post-game stuff than any other DQ game ever.

bla bla my long-ass post

I totally disagree with you. DQ IX is one of the best DQ games I have ever played.

Then tell me why you disagree, like everyone else has. :P I beat the hell out of the game, and I will likely never play it again, barring an enhanced Wii U port that would only happen in my dreams.

There's a story in DQ IX, which revolves around the main character and how Corvus was imprisoned for 300 years... the story takes long time to develop, I like the story, The DQVC I can't use anymore (because no wifi here), but I did at one time get some amazing rare items.... the multiplayer is good. In the menu, you can call your extra person you called from another world... (meaning from another DQ IX game) and they can fight with you. That I liked. The overalll play of game is excellent. DQ IX is the hardest of all the DQ titles in the series and rightly so. I love DQ IX for how the game works. I love DQ IV for the characters, I love DQ III for the unvealing of the Legend of Erdrick (Loto), I love DQ V for the story, and I like DQ VI for the guy with the spiky hair!

DQIX isn't hard.

Dq5, 7, and8, now those are hard.

And the Story IS the problem. You get a snippet of it at the ass end of the main game, qnd the DLC isnt that much better.

The only part I liked was Coffinwell.

Gonna have to disagree with you Eccadairius, As someone who plays RPGs mainly for the stories, having a very slight story at the end of the game is laughable. I can remember the stories and plot of every other DQ game, and i can remember a very detailed plot of others. I could not for the life of me, remember the point of IX. and thats never a good sign.

And yeah, the multiplayer was fun and all...the one time in the years i had the game. They really should have made it a full online game for the states, not just "If people near you have it you can play together :D"

The game itself was laughably easy for me compared to 4, 6 and 7 for me. It took me forever to beat Psaro the first time playing the game, same with Mortimor and Orgodemir. Heck, i only really beat Mortimor once. It's hard to see how a game is difficult when you can easily run by all of the enemies and go straight for the boss. Heck, it was so easy to run by enemies that i could enter in a level 77 grotto with a level 1, and go hunt some king metal slimes, encountering only the enemies that i wanted to encounter

You go to find fruit from the sky, and after finding fruit, fruit is stolen, you fight the supposed big bad only to find out at the end some douche angel ends up being the real big bad, and the final boss music sounds like regular boss music.
