Nintendo to release first "free to play" game in their library

I could see it happen but we might as well wait and see.

Even if DQX was overhauled to be free to play, you would still be paying for the game disk.

eShop could be an option.

It wouldn't be SOOO bad for me if the Wii U (and 3DS) weren't region locked, but they are.

I don't want to get excited for this.  My heart was already broken yesterday.  But I can't help myself

It's not Dragon Quest X. If it was, it's an already known and existing game, so why hide the name of it? I'm betting on something that'll have something to do with Miis.

There is zero chance that the game would be free and the subscription would be waived. The impact of every tea table in Japan being flipped at once would cause another tsunami. This will be some dopey browser game with some kind of DLC.

DQX will never, ever be F2P. It that's the only way an MMO can operate in the west, then that means we'll never see it. There's too much money to be made in Japan for that to ever happen.

And please don't bring up the fact that Monster Hunter 3 is free to play here but paid in Japan, they're completely different genres. I keep seeing that argument and it's just wrong.

I present, in order of likelihood, the localization options for DQX:

A. Game is translated and released in the west.

B. Game stays in Japan.

C. Game is overhauled to be F2P.

D. Game is overhauled to be F2P and they give the game away for free.

Bear in mind, since subscriptions are handled through the eShop, that Nintendo profits from them as well.

What do you mean, overhauled? DQX is already F2P -- for 2 hours a day. Kid's hour. It would be trivial to extend that.

They won't without some other form of revenue stream, but it is possible.

That's exactly what I mean, overhauled to have paid DLC. You would have to throw out alchemy and crafting. The whole game would need to be rearranged. On top of that, the Japanese players would have a fit. And it just wouldn't generate enough revenue to cover the server cost and weekly updates. DQX was built from the ground up to be supported by subscriptions.

F2P implies microtransactions in the MMO genre.

Yeah, one that you don't pay retail price for up front.

Maybe I'm wrong! I'd love to be wrong, but I don't think I am.

You are -- Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World are two games that have a retail price up front but no monthly.  GW2 designed for that originally, TSW retrofitted for that after release.
