I forgot to pick up the thief's key in Dragon Quest VI (SFC) when I had the chance, and now I can't get the fire claw and defeat Mudou because of it! Oh well, guess I'll go level-grind at Mudou's cave and castle and just keep wiping my party out until I get strong enough to defeat him...

What are the options for players without the thief's key? Or is there no option?

(P.S. Keep in mind that I'm playing the SFC version.)

You can win without the Fire Claw. Its just a little harder.

Mudou IS a pretty cheap boss tho. Reminds me of Kecleon from DQIV. >0

Just try to keep your party healed up as much as possible while slowly dealing damage. Its a hard fight.

Is it not possible to go back and get the key?

I found that the DS version was pretty tough, so I can only imagine what this version is like.

Well, I forgot about the key until later on, when I was reminded that the doors are locked. And the bazaar ended when I finally had enough money when I came back to Shiena after spending it all on the scale armour/shield and a copper sword previously, so...

How about holy swords as an alternate way to defeat Mudou?

It might be hard-as-nails to nearly impossible without overleveling yourself, which is exactly what I'm going to do.

And I can't get past Mudou and his pierrot goons, and I'm almost always unlucky at the casinos, so...

it'll be fine as long as you had carver use that knuckle sandwhich/spirit punch (he learned it by this moment if i remember correctly) although it may miss some of the time,

As long as your about lv15-18, then it'll be fine. (reach lv 18-20 if you're unsure, don't need to go to lv25 or something..)

Well, my party was at the mid-to-late 10s, and I didn't even fight Mudou when they were killed; rather, it was some random encounters with chameleon men, burning breaths, and (if I do recall) sleep horns.

That's it, I say. I'm leveling my party up to level 18-20.

getting paralyzed from burning breaths would be so nasty,, maybe you can bring sure moonwort bulbs,, even so, chance of getting to hit is like 1/7 to 1/4, ... but i'd recommend taking down chameleon men, because sometimes the game would be rebellious,, (as for my case in DQVIII, i failed to get a "no game over" run just because some random monster cast thwack and it did HIT ALL my 4 people party, resulting one hit ko to my party,,, lol x_x.)

No, I meant the monster (which you dubbies may know as scorching man), not the actual skill.

Currently training in Mudou's cave, albeit not as much as I used to, since I'm currently collecting Skylanders. Once I get done with that, then I'll remind you.

Good news! A few days ago, I finally defeated Mudou.

UPDATE (1/6/2013): Remove the question because it has already been answered a long time ago.
