I started up the Fire Emblem: Three Houses DLC. I am only on chapter 3, but I am already regretting on putting it on Hard. I am pretty bad when it comes to tactics games. Let alone something that can crush you like Fire Emblem.

Chapter 2 pissed me off. Oh boy. I tried to cheese the chapter by camping in a corner. Only for a powerful unit to spawn right behind my army and mess me up. Had to reset that entire fight. And the maps for the DLC are pretty damn big. So it takes a while to get through. Not fully sure if I feel like the DLC is worth the price tag or not.

And that is why I waited to buy any of the DLC. I’ve been paying attention to fan feedback. I might pick up the DLC sometime this year, but it’s not like Breath of the Wild where I feel like it would be fully worth it to be honest.

We’ll see how I feel after a full playthrough.

Damn, chapter 5 was definitely a challenge in FE Three Houses. The climb to the boss was a task due to the reinforcements that kept showing up, but then the boss had a sudden second form that just wouldn’t die! I’m scared to see how this new mechanic is going to keep appearing in the game, especially if you have long battles with other the “2nd phase,” as it were.

For reference, my play time was 13:44 before, and after the map my playtime was 15 hours on the dot. Damn! Sure didn’t feel like I was playing that map for that long! I’m glad I managed to find an Armorslayer sword in the map so the heavily protected enemy units went down quickly.

I’m glad I was able to get a few of my units up to Intermediate Classes before I started the chapter. Byleth being a Thief and Claude being a Lord helped out, as did Leonie as a Cavalier and Raphael as a Brawler. He could get 4x attacks, and in some battles he had a 15% chance at a critical, which is pretty damn good for (what I assume is) early on in the game!

This game is definitely starting to click with me now. I’m enjoying the challenge of Hard Classic mode with this game, and it’s just been actually fun to play.

Finally wrapped up my second play through all of the Etrian Odyssey games and my first time actually beating Etrian Odyssey III. I love seeing how much the series has grown in balance and complexity, and it brings a tear to my eye seeing how much the creators the creators care to cultivate an RPG series that respects player choice and strategy more, and better, than I've ever seen another turn-based RPG manage. The boys down at Atlus have me pining for a Switch release of something.

Man I played Etrian Odyssey III so so so much more than any other individual EO game. It was so adventurous with the ocean stuff!

Etrian Odyssey III was an absolute treat, but it's super obvious that the series' focus on highly tactical combat, player micromanagement of skill trees and its unique design of skills and classes is still fresh in the minds of the developers. This side of the franchise I think actually reached its peak in Nexus, which not only featured the best of old classes, but also totally reimagined them in incredibly novel ways. It also helped fix the series's very old issue of being a slow burn, so it's a lot easier to get people into Etrian Odyssey with the more immediate Nexus.

I’m glad to see we have another person of culture here on the Den who truly appreciates Etrian Odyssey. It makes me a happy Yangus.

Finally popped Trials of Mana back in for a little bit. I was concerned I wouldn't remember what I was doing but 15 minutes or so of walking around and talking to people got me back on track. I'll try to play it a little more frequently as time permits.

I think I need to chill with the crafting on Rune Factory 4 & just plow ahead with the story. The last boss I took I, I just walked up and hit it, didn't bother blocking or avoiding attacks. I ended up getting hit twice total, took maybe 15% HP off. The battle lasted under 30 seconds. I think I'm way OP. A lot OP.

I never thought I'd have the chance to make one of my favorite video game characters happy! Truly, this is a momentous occasion!

Made it about 1/3 into the last dungeon of Final Fantasy 6 last night. The random encounters are actually harder than the bosses lol. Hoping to finish it up tonight. Seeing how it's pay day I might swing by Best Buy after work and get Fire Emblem Three Houses...

Oh no! Flayn has gone missing! Not the green haired little girl who’s only shown up a few times! Whatever shall the Three Houses do?!?!

More important from story stuff, I found out something cool about the Fire Emblem related amiibo when it comes to FE Three Houses. Using amiibo lets you earn some extra healing items, but more importantly, it adds in music specifically from the games of that particular Fire Emblem amiibo! Let me tell you, doing an optional battle for a side quest while fighting to “With Mila’s Divine Protection,” was pretty sweet. Even the male and female versions of Corrin gave different songs from Fates, so that was pretty cool.

Only FE related amiibo I don’t have are Ike and Tiki, but even without them the songs added by all the ones I do own are pretty great choices. I’m glad to have a battle theme I can use thanks to my boy Roy.

#$*!ing Fire Emblem bullshit just happened. I get to the end of the chapter map to rescue Flayn, and the stupid Death Knight got a critical hit on Byleth so I lost the entire chapter. And I had gotten some good level up stat gains for my characters.

Damn it. Well, time to play the stupid map again at light speed mode.

Edit: Ok, NOW the map is beaten. Glad it only took another attempt after that awful bad luck. This time Byleth got the killing crit on the Death Knight instead of the other way around, so that was satisfying. Lorenz and Hilda didn’t get all the good level ups he had the first run, but thankfully Ignatz and Leonie made you for it with their stat gains.

I’m thinking the Death Knight and Flame Emperor are

Spoiler

Jeritza and Edelgard respectively

but we’ll see if I’m right.

Both parts of this plan happened. I went to a local game store and picked up Medievil and Neir Automata. I played a little bit of Medievil and I'm gonna try to beat it while my wife is gone up north for a few days.

So because it was Byleth getting killed it an automatic game over and you can't rewind time right? That's what I don't like about some games. Like if this one character dies you lose. It makes me not want to use them because I have to be super careful and not get too far into the action.

Yeah, but I had also used all my Divine Pulse charges so I wouldn’t have been able to save him anyway. I just got extremely unlucky with that crit from the Death Knight, but I was able to make up for it in the redo (and not just getting him back with a random crit either).

In most of the games I’ve played with this mechanic, the main character is usually the strongest character in the game. Byleth in this game alone trumps all my other party members in overall stats, and I’ve purposely not been leveling him as much. I’ve seen it the same way in other Fire Emblem games, both the ones I’ve played and the ones I haven’t. The weakest of all the lords (aka lead character group) is Roy from The Binding Blade, but he is still a strong character.

Only series where it’s hard to deal with is any SMT related game.

Back to Tokyo Mirage Sessions after my customary “stuck so I’m going to take a week off” break. And just like every other time, the problem fixes itself almost immediately. The boss I was stuck on was a breeze this time and now I can move on, which is good because I had basically run out of new weapons to use so I was basically using mastered or mildly upgraded weapons, which is a waste. A flood of Radiant Unity skills unlocked too. And I’ve got Duo Arts that can extend the length of my Sessions and a couple Master Seals as well. Right now, I’m just blitzing through some side content and then I’ll get back to the main game. I hear the next chapter is incredibly long compared to the rest.

Three Houses is pretty good so far. I'm not fully sure about how the study portion works so I have it on auto for now. Seems to be the students or you pick what skill you want them to train allowing you to customize what they'll be good in which is a cool system but I'll likely stick to auto teach.

I’m trying really hard to finish Tokyo Mirage Sessions before I take off to Chicago on Thursday. From what I can tell, I’ve got about 12 hours left, potentially 13-14 when I factor in the side quests I’d like to do. My party is cutting through enemies like butter so that’s a good sign that I’m properly leveled.

I’m gonna take an opportunity to talk about side quests some more. These things are bizarre. I’ve talked about the content of them before, but the structure is also weird. Sometimes you could be fighting a boss that’s slightly stronger than a mid-boss. Other times you’re just reading the text and picking an option.

Almost always you get a costume out of it, and, they usually end with a performance of some kind. The musicians in your party have whole songs that they perform. There’s basically an anime OP in one random character’s side quest (and it looks like that’s the only piece of 2D animation in the whole game aside from a brief scene at the beginning). I’m almost certain there’s an album’s worth of songs here and that they stuck them a CD at some point.

I also took a look at some of the DLC out of curiosity and, along with the usually costume packs (one offers costumes representing four of Atlus’s core franchises), they sell a sort of hybrid between traditional DLC and a micro transaction. It costs about as much as a costume might, and it adds a new dungeon to go to, but what it is is a place to quickly level up your party to make it easier. The awkwardly worded description even explains what kind of person would want to buy it, and mentions that one of the downsides to buying it is that it might make gameplay less fun.

Three Houses: Welcome to Chapter 7 of the game, where the famous battle between the Eagle and Lion Houses will take place! Isn’t that great?!?!

TH: STOP ASKING QUESTIONS AND GET READY FOR THE #$*!ING BATTLE AT THE END OF THE CHAPTER.

Me: Fine, gawd! I’ll fight the stupid fight! Lousy game making me fight in something that doesn’t seem necessary...

TH: WHAT WAS THAT?

Me: Nothing, nothing...

Edit: Okay, ignoring all my nonsense above, I’ve made some good progress at the start of this new chapter. Thanks to my progress for Byleth I was able to recruit both Catherine and Shamir, with the former just destroying the monthly tournament to an absolutely unfair degree. It was so beautiful, and really the reward wasn’t super worth it but it was just fun. 😈

It looks like I can start doing some Paralogue battles now. The first is focused on Lorenz and his family, so that should be interesting. Lorenz is (unironically) my favorite character from the Golden Deer House, so I’m hoping this will shed more light on his character and why he acts the way he does. I probably won’t use Catherine and Shamir too much since they are clearly very strong units, but if the Death Knight shows up as a boss again...well, I won’t feel quite as bad if they trail behind the rest of the units and then swoop in to show the Knight who’s boss.

Also, going to call another character reveal prediction for a character Sothis commented on:

Spoiler

Tomas is going to be that creepy mage guy from the Byleth Smash Bros. reveal trailer. Don’t know what that guy’s name is, but with Sothis commenting on Tomas and what was said in the previous chapter/how Tomas looks, the gears in my head are starting to think he’s the crazy black eyed mage from the Smash trailer.

I kind of thought that was weird as well. I ended up going with the Golden Deer (FEAR THE DEER!) and when they mentioned it I'm like...how am I going to factor into this?

In regards to recruiting other students, are they basing their requirements off of Byleth's stats? I believe they're all "battle" stats but I'm not sure how to raise them other than in battle. Like...can I raise my "reason" skill in the monastery?

Yes. The other teachers can help raise stats like Reason or Heavy Armor.

Whats funny is that now the characters are saying all of the Houses take part in the battle and how great it is and so on. I imagine they came up with the name first at the school and then Rhea or someone was like “Oh #$*!, we forgot about the Golden Deer! Maybe if we include them in the fight anyway no one will notice...”

Oh yeah, I just got the tutorial prompt about interacting with them. I talked to the guy with the monocle but there wasn't an option to learn from him, he was just going on about those god damn crests. Is there only a certain point that I can do it at like on free days?

Yes. On free days or in seminars you will gain stat points for those skills. Sitting in on a seminar will cost a free day but will help Byleth and several house members and learning from a faculty member when exploring the monastery will cost one activity point.

Not playing anything new at the moment. I just recently bought the Dragon Quest Erdrick Trilogy on Switch after months of telling myself it wouldn't be worth the money to buy games I've already played before. I hate replaying games unless there's some big incentive to do so, and Dragon Quest II is the only one I never really finished so I didn't wanna just buy one, but... I ended up getting all three. Along with them, I got Final Fantasy IX, the only Final Fantasy I've yet to really play, and 3000th Duel, a Metroidvania Souls-like I heard was like Hollow Knight.

I finished blazing through Dragon Quest 1 and I'm well into Dragon Quest II. I got all the sigils I can get without the Gold Key, stuck on finding it. I caved and peaked at a guide, but never got to where it told me because they say the castle was "the scene of the battle between Erdrick and Dragon Lord" and I realized that the guide was not reliable calling Alef by "Erdrick" like that.

After all of this, I realized I should make a list chronicling all of the JRPG's/SRPG's I've played in my life for the benefit of anyone who'd love to share in my love of particular games on the list.
