Dragon Quest I: Roto's Rebirth

Ok, this topic is for the first remake of that I'm doing. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the other two (II and III) post in the old topic. Why did I start a new topic? Simply put, I didn't back up nearly as much as I hoped, meaning I had to remap over half the world, recreate the custom sprites, redo my day/night system... yadda yadda. But now that I have my new laptop (windows 7 is kinda sucky IMO) I have already finished mapping and 70% of the monsters! Also I did have a written up copy of the list of new monsters and I figured I'd share. These do not include the bonus dungeon monsters/new bosses. I will post some screenies a little later but for now enjoy the new list!

Things removed:

- the intro where the hero was trying to flee Alefgard

- the use of the ship (the new story is much more linear than the original and the ship made it easy to bypass some events)

- 2 of the 4 new towns I created

 

Things added:

- jukebox like item to change the music (only DQ songs, mainly OW themes)

- day/night system (just finished it... again)

- new weapons and armor to include Metal King pieces, Leather Hat, Iron Helmet, Roto's Helmet, Bunny Ears, Roto's Shield, Cloak of evasion, Mankini, bunny outfit, Dancer's Costume, Shimmering Dress, Flowing Dress, Furcape, Meteorite Bracer, Gold Bracer, Bunny tail, Bronze Knife, Oaken Staff, Iron Staff, Lightning Staff, Wimpy Bracer, and a Ball Gag.

- new items antidotal herbs, world leaf, world dew.

Does it still have a second (female) party member when you save the princess? I don't remember if that was in before or not. In any case, nice to see the revealing armor not limited to just females this time around. The Mankini should make for solid protection against any kind of attack.

 

Also, I look forward to seeing what a Queen Slime looks like.

When you equip all of the Roto Equipment the sprite changes. It's a custom sprite, and I'm no spriter so it may suck, but I don't care much, you get the gist of it...

world map... again... it was so annoying to do all over again. but I did try to make it better, not as many mistakes... I hope.

 

well making the Roto sprite took 2.5 hours, a whole lot longer than I wanted. Now all I have to do is make the mankini sprite, and the bunny outfit princess. That one though is easier cuz it's just gonna be a pallet swap. Yay

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Rather doing the guess and check method of the monsters trying to figure out how to adjust their stats accordingly to fit rpg maker vx's warped battle system I drcided to edit the code itself! This may not seem like a big deal but I have a fear of ruby scripting. I decided to bite that bullet though and try it, so needless to say after hours of agonizing research I did it! I will hopefully have all the monsters at the right stats by tomorrow! :)

Story thus far... The legendary hero has become a myth all over the world, not just in Alefgard. As a soldier you honor the code of the Hero and chase after evildoers that threaten the throne. Climbing a tower chasing down an infamous criminal you are tricked and fall off the tower into the ocean only to be awoken outside of Kol, where you learn of the extent of the damage caused by the Dragon Lord. As a soldier you can't let innocents suffer so you travel to see the King of Tantagel who suspects you to be more than just an ordinary soldier... from there your quest begins!

 

Yeah... I know... I completely changed the game. It's more of a retelling than a remake actually. But I stated that before. any way here is another screenie of the heroes leaving Mercado early in the morning.

just made an option to play solo quest, though it is nearly impossible unless you grind, a lot. The dragon lord gave me issues at level 35 solo fighting him. But the option is there rather than just carrying around a coffin. it will also be available in II and I am trying to think of extra bonuses for doing a solo quest but I'm at a loss.

well the fact that I'm getting views is a plus, it shows there's a mild interest out there. anyway I have a question, maybe one of you viewers can answer. Monster medals like in III yay or nay. I mean not for the bonus dungeon but what do you think about having to collect them for a prize? if I do it in one game though I'd want it done in all...

I'm leaning towards nay. I prefer a monster book type thing where you have a record of the monsters you have defeated. If you do throw in monster medals, I would say it would probably be best to limit it to just one medal for each monster. None of that bronze, silver, gold business. That was insane!

yeah, it would only be one type of medal, VX only has 2 item drops per enemy so a monster medal plus regular item drops would be ok. Hmmm a monster book I could try but there would be a LOT of work in that. Im going to test that out now.

Some ideas for solo quest bonuses:

- Make a 'Solo' Hero, and increase some of his stats a little, so he's a little tougher than the 'normal' hero.

- Some kind of newgame+ mode that can only be earned by solo questing?

- A dungeon or a place that can only be reached in the solo quest? Think of like, a hall of heroes or something, where only the bravest may set foot.

- An exp bonus item (if possible) or an increase in metal class monster spawn areas (only for the solo quest)

 

Some other things

- Have a few collection items, such as small medals. come up with some others and have a few. Ancient medals or something. Make a collectors shop for the medals, as in the dw games.

- The monster medals would be nice too, and could also have some kind of reward shop. Maybe if you collect 50 slime medals or something, then you can recruit a slime to join you (and he's a little tougher than regular slimes).

yes, some of that is being used. I do have mini medals, and it's set up like in DQ V, where you pick out a prize rather than get one based on the number. some of the stuff is only accessible post Dragon Lord. I think Im going to have the Monster book Idea where you have to try and fill it for a prize. For the solo quest its going to be a permanent thing, like after you rescue the princess you can choose to go alone with the option to take her back (but no solo bonus because you could use the princess to help grind and then beat the dragon lord alone which i find cheap), or you can go alone permanently having to start a new game if you want her back, but this version of the solo hero will have increased growth rate (no change in stats just quicker to reach). These options will be in II and III as well.

 

I made a chance spell :) it works fine. I did things more my way though so it really has good and bad effects.

-Lora spaces out

-Everyone losses all MP

-All monsters stare at Lora (like jessica's sex appeal)

-Lora revives any dead enemies

-Transforms all monsters into Dragon Lord (have his stats but not HP)

-monsters leave

-randomly gain 900 EXP

-poisonous fog poisons everyone

-automatic game over

-echo

-party goes berserk and attacks for 3 turns straight

-lora falls asleep

-lora casts kathwack... and dies

-lora casts kathwack and it works

-lora spaces out... again

-listens to the j-pod or wants j-pod

-lora goes into a rage where she is stronger and her defense goes down, she is nolonger controlable

-finds some extra gold

-gust of wind blows off your armor

-lora uses healusall

 

now i know this may seem a little tipped in balance but there is NO restriction on who the effects are on. this means you could kill a boss instantly, or some metal monster. or you could die. feeling lucky XD

Cool, I like the chance effects. I will definitely be holding my breath while casting that spell in this game. Sounds like you have done quite a lot of work really quickly.

sorta, currently mapping out towns and dungeons, but since i lost a good chunk of data when my laptop broke all the tiles i created are gone so i have to re import them. and for ssome reason the tiles of vx are double the size of the tiles for rpgmaker2k. so the tile importing is a pain. also making enemy groups are a lot harder than i thought, one too many monsters realllly makes a difference in a battle. I'm actually thinking of you having to save the princess right off rather than wait. If so I have to change a whole lot of monster stats.

Ok, I've been mainly testing scripts and what not today. Had to figure out how to script an inn that would work with my day/night system... it was both difficult, but also easier than expected. Also figured out how to make the coffin follow behind the living player, so that is a plus. and here is a zoomed out version of Kol! Huzzah!

As for extra features, if you beat the game solo (permanent solo where you can't get any party members to join you) there is a new game+ haha. But I did add a third party member to the list. His name is Slib (I'm guessing you know what he is). To get him you need to collect 50 slime medals. If you choose solo he will not join you though. Hmm what else did I add... oh the new game+ is another solo game but you play as a slime hero. I think it's a neat idea. He's basically the solo hero but with a few different moves. Yeahhh I'm having too much fun with this now.

i tried to do some casino like stuff but i suck, so i'm making some minigames instead! so far i got a slime herding game and one with random chests. i'm thinking of creating an arena like battles where you have to battle with no MP or items solo for prizes. similar to golden sun. you will get coins like the casino. some of the neat stuff of the game will be here.

 

I found a script for monster book! huzzah!

Now i hate using scripts because i dont know how to code... and it makes me feel bad for using someone elses work... but i shall credit them and i shall learn! eventually...

oh it gets even better boys and girls. after hours of scouring different sites for script tutorials i found someone who actually made a dq menu script. I mean it's awesome.

I misspelled magic, haha that's funny, and the color will be changed from blue to gray but I mean other than that it's great. I was so happy to find it. Now to be honest I don't know if there will be a formation option... I'm just no good at this scripting stuff...

well got the new menu worked out. slowly learning scripting too. mainly editing though don't think I could sit and code myself yet.

New menu now shows Gold and Location! It also is a hybrid gray of the old games and style but has the opacity of the new DS remakes.

All items now have their proper icons. Also added the thing where your character flips the mini medals just for fun.

Haha yeah... I tested that script out hundreds of times (because it's all randomly based on who's in the party) and I never caught that :(. Guess when you do it it's harder to pick up on minor errors.

 

Edit: Jami bashfully changed "basfully" to "bashfully." :P

nay to monster taming. but there is 2 monsters (slimes) that you can play as. the first is just a third party member. if you manage to beat the game solo mode (i mean SOLO you are given a choice after you rescue Lora) you get a solo slime hero quest with little things changed. But in the remake of III i have planned there will be monster classes! like in VII. I tried making a DQM game doing a hack of a pokemon rom but all my data was wiped out so then I started on the roto/loto trilogy. with some add ons. feel free to sugest some other ideas though as I have incorporated a LOT already. Optional bonus bosses are up to 5 and there are 5 new bosses in the original game! (Some of which I do not know what type of monster to use) It is a massive project but I am having fun doing it. So like I said if you have any other suggestions for DQ I rebirth let me know here. If you have any for II or III please visit the other forum further down the list XD.

 

I appreciate the offer for the sprites but I already made all the custom ones :( ummm but actually if you have access to the DQIII SFC sprites or DQVI SFC sprites and you want to try making the 3 heroes from DQII I'd be stoked.
