So I've been thinking about this for a while now but it always annoys me how many of my friends aren't into Dragon quest. A lot of the time they simply haven't been exposed to it or rather just don't seem to know where to start. I've given up on a few of them since they seem to be pre occupied with other series and to each there own. I mean Persona isn't my jam but I will try it sometime. However I have gotten my girlfriend into the series so I don't doubt that I could do the same for other people. I still have some hope. But what would you guys recommended as someone's first Dragon quest game? How would you introduce them to the series? I have a few routes. If there a Traditionalist ( someone who grew up on 8bit or older 16bit rpgs) then either the GBC remake of Dragon Quest 1 or SFC( if there into emulation) or heck even the old NES games. (starting either with 1 for a quick game or 2 for a general good idea of what the series is. 3 afterwards to see the class system into play) Perfect amount of difficulty mixed in with older style gameplay give someone a chance to see the monster design and the challenge and if they want to get into the whole class systems/fun stuff they can without being overwhelmed. If they are more Rpgs Veterans ( late 16bit or 32bit rpgs) then I'd introduce to V for the story and mechanics. IV if they want to see the class system handled with limited options. VI to really see the class system and get a general idea what a DQ game is like. All the DS version ( unless again they are into older style and don't mind emulation). Finally VII on the PS1 ( or 3ds ) However its supper important they play VI before VII. I thinks VII will be that much more enjoyable with its crazy hybrid skills. Finally if they are more into mainstream/modern RPg's . I'd suggest to start with VIII. If they want to play the older stuff that's cool they can find it on the DS along with IX. However if not they still get to enjoy one of the best stories. I've bought this game for a friend and I'm still waiting to crack it. I'm also secretly waiting to get that text from him when his first party member dies and ask me where to buy some "phoenix down".
