  1. I accidentally discovered Torneko no Daibouken. I am now addicted.

    1. Erdrick The Hero

      Erdrick The Hero

      'Tis quite fun.

How'd you not know about it/how'd you find out?

  2. To celebrate the 30 years of Dragon Quest Dai I decided to start watching it for the first time. I'll post impressions when I'm done 😀

    1. DrippySlimeStar

Where are you watching it? There wouldn't happen to be any subbed versions right?

    2. Chris

I'd like to know where you're watching it as well. :3

    3. Kakugo

I don't think I can directly say this but its name sounds like what cats sound like in Japan (lol).

  3. Why do people pick the hardest difficulty if they're going to grind their brains off anyways? Wouldn't be better to play on normal instead and skip the grinding?

  4. After hogging DQ1 on mobile for the last month I finally decided to go through the whole Erdrick trilogy, starting with DQ3 on mobile.

(now what I need is a DQ-themed wallpaper)

  5. I'll be playing Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 (because random encounters and no broken party members). If any kind soul decides to release a random encounters mod for DQ XI let me know!

    1. YangustheLegendaryBandit

Don’t you disrespect Morrie now. Red, I don’t care, but not Morrie.

    2. Madrigal

I have to say that I think the PS2 visually and sound wise is superior to the 3ds version and I hope we get a PS4 port.  I do love having Red and Morrie recruitable…. wished Marek and Ishmari were recruitable too.

  6. I just realized my problem with 100%ing games: It can't be an accurate measure of skill. It takes effort but it's not as demanding as some self-imposed challenges like x6 draconian on 11 yet people /clap harder for the achievement hunter and not for the x6 guy.

Oh and btw I haven't done either so I'm impartial to the debate.

    1. ignasia

Correct.  It's also one thing I dislike about Trophies, it gives people something to say...wow I totally completed a game, only it's shallow, and it actually takes away the joy of playing it again, not for the effort so much as the sense that there's nothing left to do.  When in reality real challenges have always been what you make of them.

I'll never forget FF4 DS and my Solo Rydia and Solo Cecil boss rush + fixed battles only challenge.  Took me months to get through two bosses: Lugae and Demon Wall.  Just brutal.  No one else in history, not even in Japan taking on a similar challenge, have gotten past those two bosses, because it's pure luck.  Literally the stars have to align perfectly.

I also met people judging a game by the time it takes to 100% it. "Oh, it took you 90 hours to 100%? But it's a JRPG wtf were they thinking?" they were probably thinking of giving people the most piss poor achievements so they can take their cup and move on with their lives.

  7. Just completed DQXI. What a great ride! Starting my second playthrough tonight, will be playing for 1-2 hours before bed time daily. Fantastic game!

  8. Isn't it odd that the Western JRPG player complains about the combat speed more than the Japanese player? Their culture is more intrinsically workaholic, you'd think they would be the first to request such features.

  9. Dragon Quest XI made me remember all the charming things that made me love the turn-based JRPG genre and I feel like I may not be able to play another turn-based JRPG for a while.

    1. ignasia

      You say that now...

    2. Kakugo

I mean, "for a while" isn't forever. I don't think I can go back to glorified visual novels again.

  10. I like how nobody complained about "silent protagonist is keeping the narrative back" for games like Chrono Trigger and Suikoden 1 & 2, but for DQXI it makes it literally unplayable for some people.

    1. ignasia

You can't help cognitive dissonance in others.  Maybe a frying pan to the back of the head if you're willing to accept some jail time.  Or going through the pain of actually hashing it out in a discussion with them trying different angles to see if something works, only to find your own brain goes through catharsis for some as their lack of ability to think is what is keeping them from enjoying anything outside the norm (stuff they already complain about but lack the realization that whether they enjoy something or not is entirely based on perception and openness of thought so you can critically understand why something is truly good or bad).

The same people if you actually asked them to think critically would likely produce real headaches because that's generally what they've been taught in school: stop thinking, it's not worth your time.

I digress.  Some people refuse to help themselves, and so cannot be helped.

    2. Megalosaro

On the contrary, back in the day people #$*!ed about it all the time.   Those older games, people have come to terms with it being in those games.

Was the protagonist in Suikoden I and 2 silent?  I don't remember.  But I do recall lots of backlash against Chrono Trigger and Cross and it in older games back in the 90s

  11. Happy birthday!

  12. Where can I find more information on the DQ11 "Draconian Quest" which is supposedly the hard mode that we're getting for our version?

  13. Finished Cold Steel 2, didn't liked it at all. Now I'm heading back to Dragon Quest to play the Erdrick Trilogy as my first games.

    1. Plattym3

What didn't you like about it?  I'm almost done with Cold Steel 1 & am wondering about 2.

    2. Tiael

I loved 2, do it Platty.

    3. Kakugo

Combat difficulty remained the same low level even on Nightmare, and the way the boss fights are resolved is a coin-flip. The twist at the end felt kinda forced, like they had to have a twist to blow your mind so take that.

  14. Happy new year all!

  15. I can't believe that I'm still enjoying the first Dragon Quest. After about 3-4 playthroughs of the mobile version I'm checking out the NES one, and I deeply appreciate everything it does.

    1. Kakugo

After I'm done with the NES one I will finally play my second Dragon Quest ever, which is obviously going to be Dragon Warrior 2.

  16. Which DQ game was the first that introduced enemies dropping weapons and gear in general?

  17. I somehow managed to almost break my index finger while attempting to kill a mosquito. For that reason I'm looking for a challenge run for DQ1 before I start with DQ2. Got any ideas?

  18. Finally finished Trails of Cold Steel 1. Pretty cool game tbh and it made me check out the fan translation for Zero no Kiseki, which I already do a "no damage" attempt on.

I'm going through FC for the third time as a side dish for Zero. Loved the Sky trilogy way before Turbo was a thing.

    3. Plattym3

Playing through Sky 1, but I do have Cold Steel sitting unopened ready to play.

    4. Tiael

Likewise, starting when FC hit PSP.

  19. People who 2x speed JRPG's to grind completely missed the point of Horii's quote.

@tesla Remakes made things less grindy to appeal to a wider audience, which results to profit. The obstacle that stops me from grinding my way through challenge was higher, and now is WAY lower. That's all.

    3. Bururian

Well, it's easy when you have One For All.

    4. Neofrodo

Thats not true. Most people praise the changes the remakes offered. Even old skool fans.

A very few minority like things the way they were on the NES. For good reason.

  20. Sonic Mania gets delayed for PC. Me: "More days for Cold Steel"

...force an acceptance for 4 being the final game?)

      4) Skies of Arcadia Legends HD

      5) Skies of Arcadia 2

    3. ignasia

...maybe Sonic: The Dark Brotherhood 2

    4. Kakugo

I have to play Phantasy Star one day, but I still need to play SMT and Persona.

  21. Enjoying Trails of Cold Steel so far.

    1. Tiael

      *Two thumbs up

  22. I just made 2 friends mad because I'd rather support Dragon Quest games than Trails of Cold Steel due to the poor way the latter handled "balancing" its gameplay.

I agree about the balance. Tbh gameplay wise legend of heroes isn't the greatest, it's really the characters and world you're playing for imo.

    3. Kakugo

Yeah, true. I cleared all 3 Sky games and besides some fights on Nightmare in SC and 2 fights in the 3rd, it was fine.

    4. Kakugo

Well, one of them gifted it to me just now. Might as well play it lol.

  23. Checked out amazon user reviews of DQXI. They're very happy, at 4-stars after 552 reviewers.

    1. Neofrodo

Well it IS a new DQ title. I'd expect as much. : P

    2. Kakugo

Yeah, well it's not rare for a new game that belongs to a franchise to stir disappointment. Tales of Zestiria cough.

    3. Neofrodo

More like people tend to dislike any type of radical change.

You see this with alot of series.

  24. Finished DQ1 on SFC. Goosebumps during credits. I'll switch to the official mobile versions of the first 3 games today.
