  1. So the Nintendo Switch Lite was just announced.

I might be tempted to get one as the one I carry with me when I'm outside my home, given its $199.99 price tag.

      Shoulda called it Lite Switch.....

Happier that a cheaper Nintendo Switch is finally coming out. Was not sure how I was going to be able to afford the console plus a game or two.

  2. A 6.4 earthquake on the 4th of July, followed by a 6.9 earthquake today. "Damn nature, you're scary."

But in all seriousness, I hope I don't have to wait too much longer for any announcements.

  4. I didn't expect Square Enix to show a Dragon Quest XI S trailer during their E3 conference. I guess we'll find out about the release date either during Nintendo's E3 direct or during Nintendo's Treehouse Live.

I'm kind of not surprised by that. I still need to see it, but I'm sure it's far better than watching the circle jerk that is Bethesda, after refusing to apologize to their fans, and instead doubling down on being #$*!s in pretending they deserve sympathy because...people are behind the screens, and wow, they have personal stories, some of hardship (like their fans do not, and that somehow excuses their own behaviour, especially when they locked out and destroyed thousands of accounts who were being critical with a positive spin, a desire to see Bethesda fix problems in their games, especially Fallout 76, with VERY little abuse and only a handful of abusive posters...and they know it, so they essentially shat all over their fanbase, and clearly used a paid-for audience, or an audience of numbnut diehard fans who will take a D in the A anyday from Bethesda, with a "thank you sir, I'd like some more...and use spikes next time so I bleed...then pee on the wounds and throw some salt because I will crawl over a lava field for Bethesda no matter what they do to me, my gaming experiences, my friends, and my fellow gamers/guild members.")  Always sad when you have to hire people to clap for a mobile game no fan, not even super fanboys, want.

Sorry, got on a rant, but seriously needed to let that out.  Bethesda is trash, and I think they killed themselves with this last one.  There are three games worth buying though, but they should have focused on that alone, though I can see them as a company shrinking a little, with certain subdivisions seeing profit margins still high (id for instance, plus their French team has what looks like a real gem on their hands).

      ----

Sorry bro, so anyway, back to the topic at hand.  I'm not surprised.  SE really wants the Switch to sell well in the US.  They want to see 1m+ worldwide in total sales, and I think they will see that.  So probably 4m in Japan, maybe 4.2, and 1~1.8m worldwide...I think, depending on how Nintendo handles marketing, the Switch version could see 700k in the US alone, another 600~800k in Europe.  I think 1.4m between the US and Europe is very possible if they focus on it, treat it like a new game.  Actually get some real commercials out, flag it on youtube and facebook for marketing purposes as a priority.  If they do that, this could really do well.  Otherwise 4~500k and 4~500k is more likely for the US and Europe, and the rest of the 1m from other regions.

So in lieu of that, I think SE, especially given there is a Dragon Quest facebook/twitter/youtube, I can see those people, including our own Michi doing some promo work.  Maybe not focusing, but definitely promo work.  At least not focusing until after Builders 2 is over and done with.

I'm hoping Nintendo will also highlight Builders 2.  I'm having SOOOOOOOOOOO much fun with Builders 1.  It's terrible, I'm 30 hours in and still only halfway done with Cantlin.  I've built another tower on top of the city, and created a whole series of upper layers, and a bunch of chests to store gobs and gobs and gobs of minerals and dirt and clay and sand and sandstone, etc.  I've actually carved out the center of several whole sections of several mountain ranges.  The whole inside just gone, lol.  You'd be surprised how many hammers I've made already (about 300 now).  I can't help it.  It's like Lego's in a videogame.  So much fun.  So so so so so much fun.

Anyway, I do really expect to see a bit more help and push from the SE side.  I'm sure this isn't just part of the contract and Nintendo wants help, but rather I think SE really wants to assure the extra costs are more than justified for going all out with the Switch version.

The only thing that bothers me are the number of asshats complaining that they were screwed over on the PS4 version.  Never a good argument, just complaints.  I get some of it, I really do, but if anything they should be happy because we're taking a complete game, and adding a ton of content to it, and content from the version we didn't get.  So #$*! yeah.  That makes me happy, even if I never did plan to buy a Switch, I'm glad to know that version exists.

Speaking of Bethesda, I find it really sad they even said that "We, like you, like mobile games." (As if a lot of gamers legitimately like playing mobile games that's riddled with microtransactions, lootboxes, etc.)  Too bad Ubisoft was only slightly better than Bethesda.

But anyway, I think there's a good chance Dragon Quest XI S will get proper advertising, considering Square Enix was happy with Octopath Traveler sales on the Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo's responsible for advertising Octopath Traveler outside Japan. And we musn't forget that Nintendo also was responsible for advertising  Dragon Quest IX outside of Japan, and Dragon Quest IX has over a million sales in North America and Europe. So I have cautious hope.

  5. If Erdrick's revealed as the next Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC character tomorrow, I don't know if I can handle seeing a lot of hate thrown at Dragon Quest. Anyway, looking forward to Nintendo's E3 Direct tomorrow.

Oh screw those people throwing needless hate at DQ. It’s just people who are upset that their most wanted character isn’t getting into the game.

People need to learn to ignore the dumb #$*! others say.

  8. Can the 3-4 weeks from now pass, so I can get some more Dragon Quest XI S news, alongside other important gaming news? Thanks.

  9. I don't know what to believe in terms of the Nintendo Switch revision rumours all over the place.

    1. ignasia

      ignasia

Just wait for the official statements, and have fun with the speculation.  I would say the releases to the official news sources are the most likely accurate, as they're consistent and have been repeated with further "data releases."

They feel like official "leaks" which is something Nintendo loves to do to generate early buzz when they're prepping for a real release, then watch responses and social media buzz based on those releases to see how to market.  They've been doing this since the DS, though screwed up majorly with the Wii U and 3DS, likely due to the health issues of Iwata and the transition issues after his death (it's hard for a company to adjust when there's no consistent direction based on leadership still establishing itself).

  10. So Reggie Fils-Aime just opened his Twitter account. This should be fun.

  11. I'm definitely getting Nintendo 3DS vibes when playing with the Labo VR Kit.

  12. I'm intrigued by the "Nintendo Switch Mini" and the "Nintendo Switch Pro" rumours,  even if there's the possibility that the rumours are false.

I personally think 2019 is too early for the "Nintendo Switch Pro". I think 2020 is a good year for the "Nintendo Switch Pro".

But what I'm afraid of is that in the future, many games (Nintendo and/or third parties) will be exclusive to the "Nintendo Switch Pro".

    3. ignasia

      ignasia

I wouldn't be.  Especially with a second weaker system.  They've likely learned much from the 3DS/N3DS and watching Sony handle the PS4/PS4Pro and MS handle the XBO/XBOS/XBOX.

Sony had few to no complaints, higher sales, drastically, and MS turned around the XBOne into a decent selling system that's so far their second best system in terms of overall sales.

Nintendo's issue was they locked off hardware, Sony and MS did not.  Sony and MS promoted the fact that the Pro and S and X systems wouldn't have exclusives, but would just enhance games.

Nintendo might try to do their own things, but they do learn from mistakes, even if it takes them a long time.  The current management seems faster on the gun as well, and more willing to listen to younger voices.  Probably due to all the issues inherent between Iwata's desires for the company, and the board (there's a reason he had health issues due to stress, and his background, and the idea of the Switch are fully representative of just how ambitious he was compared to what Nintendo released in his tenure).

Plus they're actually taking risks now, and adapting fast to problems (fast for Nintendo anyhow).

I mean if they do pull a N3DS...then they've shot themselves in the foot.  If they pull a PS4 Pro, they'll have not just gamer love, but move all three versions consistently, and watch as the "pro" version of the Switch outpaces the normal quickly due to quality updates, but without the complaints from parents, those who have the hardy purely portable version, and original adopters.

    4. Dakhil

      Dakhil

I don't know if it's possible for Nintendo to make the power gap between the current Nintendo Switch model and the "Nintendo Switch Pro" to be as drastic as the power gap between the base PlayStation 4 model and the PlayStation 4 Pro without risk of significant thermal throttling and/or a significantly steep price.

I was taking a look at the power gap between the Tegra X1 and the Tegra X2, and the power gap between the Tegra X1 and the Tegra X2 (to me) doesn't seem as drastic as the power gap between the base PlayStation 4 model and the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Of course, Nintendo could decide to use the Tegra Xavier SoC for the "Nintendo Switch Pro". But considering that the Tegra Xavier SoC has been designed for automobiles and not consumer electronics, I imagine it would cost so much money for Nintendo and Nvidia to customise/engineer the Tegra Xavier SoC, so that the "Nintendo Switch Pro" would not only be more powerful, but also be very power efficient, and also have sufficient amount of cooling, so there would be no thermal throttling.

      But what do I know?

The reason I've mentioned that I'm afraid of many games (I'm talking primarily of third party developers, but Nintendo is also a possiblity) being "Nintendo Switch Pro" exclusives is that I remember reading an article talking about a rumour where Square Enix said that it's not possible to port Kingdom Hearts III to the current Nintendo Switch model due to how demanding Kingdom Hearts III is (which makes sense since Kingdom Hearts III is all over the place performance wise on the base PlayStation 4 model and the base XBOX One/XBOX One S). And if the "Nintendo Switch Pro" is powerful enough to run Kingdom Hearts III, I think Square Enix will make Kingdom Hearts III a "Nintendo Switch Pro" exclusive game (assuming the rumours are true).

I don't know about outside Japan, but I think Nintendo will have no problem having sales of the current Nintendo Switch model skyrocket in Japan due to Dragon Quest XI S (especially with a plethora of reveals by Square Enix today).

Kind of sad, Reggie is one of those guys who creates memes almost everytime he opens his mouth.  I don't know if anyone else can top that.  Plus the guy actually likes Dragon Quest.  Hopefully Bowser is a fan as well.  Christ I hope so.  It's kind of sad knowing he won't show his face at anymore E3's or special directs (in the ones where he is present).  He might be slow when he speaks, but he was definitely a presence.

I'm going to miss those Reggie "no RPG" memes from way back.  That was almost as awesome as Kaz Hirai's "Giant Crab Boss from historical Japan you can flip for big damage!"

On the one hand Fils-Aime will be undoubtedly missed. On the other hand. we have a massive new influx of Bowser memes on the horizon.

  15. I wonder how people would react if Last Idea RPG turns out to be a mobile game.  I hope that's not the case.  https://twitter.com/LASTIDEA_RPG/status/1098145331638820864?s=19

Remember when Tokyo RPG Factory said they were going to potentially create one last game?  I get the impression this is that game.  The Last Idea being their last chance to develop something that is worth the investment.

      https://www.rpgsite.net/news/8277-tokyo-rpg-factory-s-oninaki-announced-for-playstation-4-nintendo-switch-and-steam

Nevermind, I failed to see this.  So they continue onward.  Maybe SE sees them as still profiting, even if in smaller increments.  Keep going until they hit gold or something.

      So now I'm really curious.

Also, definitely Eal.  I think they were clearly aiming for that given, despite the overwhelming sales of FF15, there are a LOT of frustrated FF fans who feel the series has gone off the rails, including in Japan.

  16. The only reason I care about Square Enix is Armor Project and the team responsible for Octopath Traveler.  The rest of Square Enix is a dumpster fire.

  17. Happy Lunar New Year, everybody.

  18. I'm sad, but at the same time, cautiously optimistic in regards to Metroid Prime 4.

    1. eal

      eal

It’s not like when SE just scraps and restarts a FF game though. Nintendo is bringing in the original studio to work on it, which is a good step.

    2. Dakhil

However, the original team responsible for the previous Metroid Prime games is no longer at Retro. But Retro hasn't made a terrible game yet, so I'm "cautiously optimistic".

  19. I know this is not directly related,  but I hope this doesn't affect the chance of future Dragon Quest games to be released simultaneously worldwide.

There are also many games I'm looking forward to coming in 2019, so 2019 may be a really busy year games wise.

      Democrobot

The 2019 game lineup is similar to the 2013 line up bar a new Zelda game.

  22. Is it just me or does the World of Light feel rather monotonous and lacklustre?

    1. Democrobot

      Democrobot

I think that's just the style they went for. Sakurai said in an interview that for this story mode they focused more on the gameplay aspect rather than the story like they did in Subspace. I will give points though to the true ending take on things and the NG+.

  23. I wonder if anyone has watched this?

It's going to come to an end on 28 August 2018. So if you still want the 20% discount, you need to pre-order games before that date.

    3. ignasia

      ignasia

It's probably a money issue.  20% definitely eats their profits, and likely forces them to pay out of pocket, maybe 2~8 per game.  They're probably doing this as prime subs are slowing and profit due to the program has affected other sectors, so they likely see no benefit.  Thus playing the same card Best Buy did of giving a gift card, that keeps the money internally and induces more sales.

      Sad, but definitely necessary.
