Hahaha, sorry, @ignasia. I have an occasionally morbid sense of humor.

    4. ignasia

@Brother Jaybird LOL, well, I used to have a very morbid sense of humour.  My aunt had this doll room that was wall to wall pink and light blue drapes, with dolls sitting on bookshelves, over couches, all starring at the center of the room, in a circular room with white wall paint, and we were never allowed to turn the light off.  So there would always be these odd shadows and the light source from the windows was always heavily reduced by the translucent drapes, giving it this eerie bluish permanent twilight throughout the day.

My uncle would pretend to be "the creature from the black lagoon" at times, pretending to rattle the glass doors and floor to ceiling windows in their family room, just off their dining room, which was very poorly lit, so you couldn't properly see what was going on in a house that was part gothic, part roman, part modern american.  It was a very creepy place.  At the bottom of a long winding path bordered by dense trees, was a very large pond with a dock, and filled with fish and reeds.  It was so full of algae and fish poop, it was impossible to see past the surface layer, and the wind would howl as it passed through two sets of dense trees, with a small opening between them.  It always felt like something was watching us from the woods as well.

They are (and were, my uncle passed on), devout Catholics, so there were a few crosses, and they had one of those giant very loud grandfather clocks with a large pendulum that was rather mesmerizing.  It kind of added to that creepy ambiance throughout the house.

My uncle had quite the collection of horror and fantasy movies, and was not shy about putting those movies on for my sister and I after we turned about 7.  Not Disney fantasy of course, but movies like Krull, Dragonslayer, Labyrinth, the Princess Bride, etc.  Horror like Creepshow and Rawhead Rex.

He was a pretty fun guy, lol.  Anyway, I used to have a very morbid sense of humour (like I loved the Bert is Evil site from back in the day, and I frequented some pretty macabre sites).  I still like horror, though I've generally lost the darker edge to my sense of humour.

  1. People: I want Persona 5 as well as older Persona games on Nintendo Switch. Can you please release them to Nintendo Switch?

    Atlus Japan: Does not compute.

Good point.  DQ needs a player controlled character development system that leads to heavy innuendo and potential marriage.

I mean we've come far enough to have 3 games now with marriage.  Now to take the next step.

Also, and this is just me, but I feel like Akira Toriyama’s designs (and artstyle in general) aren’t attractive enough to care about romance options compared to the designs in modern Persona and Fire Emblem.

    4. ignasia

I can see that.  Not that he's incapable of creating characters with a range of looks and styles that would be appealing from a purely physical aspect in the sense of generating male attention and desire, it's not like his animation style has ever been geared towards romance.  Nor his studio.  That doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but there is that sense of range between Bulma and Chichi, neither of which invoke a sense of girlishness except in very rare instances, and then it's not adult female girlishness...it's more like a child (or a child's tantrum...I have to wonder at what type of woman his wife is, lol).

  2. The Nintendo Switch officially outsold the SNES at around 52 million units. I wonder how long would it take for the Nintendo Switch to reach Wii numbers.

      http://www.vgchartz.com/article/442058/switch-vs-wiivgchartz-gap-chartsdecember-2019/

The only thing you can count on for actual accuracy on a daily basis from vgchartz, are system sales.  So these are very accurate to actual numbers.  A bit past this point, the Wii will start to slow down, and the Switch is right now experiencing high month to month.  However their best year is at this point if we compare weeks or months.

For the current month cycle on the Switch, we're comparing February, which is the last month before it turns 3 years old.

For the Wii, it will be October of 2009 before it turns 3.  So the Wii's entering a Christmas cycle, while the Switch is just starting out a new year.

October 2009 Wii sales: 2.785m -> February for Switch

November 2009 Wii sales: 7.396m -> March for Switch

December 2009 Wii sales: 1.522m -> April for Switch

January 2010 Wii sales: 1.103m -> May for Switch

February 2010 Wii sales: 1.378m -> June for Switch

March 2010 Wii sales: 856k -> July for Switch

April 2010 Wii sales: 869k -> August for Switch

May 2010 Wii sales: 896k -> September for Switch

June 2010 Wii sales: 954k -> October for Switch

July 2010 Wii sales: 597k -> November for Switch

August 2010 Wii sales: 603k -> December for Switch

      ==============

There's a few things the Switch has in its favour:

      1) MS and Sony are about to release their new consoles, and given specs, the price points will be steep compared to the initial offerings this past generation.  Sony's system will be worth about $850~1000 if rumours are true, so they'll be taking a massive hit if they release at $500~600, and will be in the red for at least the first two years.  For MS, it will be about $750~850 for its base system, $1500~1750 for the high end.  So MS, depending on what they'll likely go for, maybe $450~550 for its base, $900~1400 for its high end.  That historically, will mean slow out the gate for most gamers, until the first major price reduction before system sales really pick up, much as with the PS3 and 360.

In Japan they'll have a MUCH harder time with the PS5 given handheld popularity.  So I imagine Sony either has a handheld in mind, or they're willing to take the hit and hope the PS5 match's PS4 trends at the least.  They won't see increases until Japan's government literally tells their citizenry videogames are acceptable as an adult hobby.  For all the adult elements about Japan, regarding attitudes on a plethora of concepts, the least adult behaviour they have is allowing dictation on what is acceptable to do in their free time, and it's a bit shocking they would allow this much control over their lives.  Anyway, worldwide and in the US this won't matter nearly as much except for slow out the gate, unless they're willing to go for MS, 450 and 900 respectively, and Sony at 500.

MS might go lower if they want to attract customers.  The problem for them is the adoption rate nearly doubled after the release of the Xbox One X, by most reports.  The issue is MS doesn't release numbers, so they have to go by retailer stats, and work out a model for retailers that aren't giving numbers.  I don't see Xbox One X owners buying the Xbox 4 anytime soon.

      ---

      2) Then there's gaming library.  Both Sony and MS know the next gen games will take as long or longer than for the previous generation, especially for those with lots of physics.  The really big AAA titles especially.  Thus backwards compatibility.

This actually hurts new systems, as it did with the PS3.  Not just price point, but also timing on the heels of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S and X models.  S had minimal impact, but X was fairly huge.  There's also a very large chunk of the 360 market that has yet to buy a new MS console (like a good 40%), and most of those will likely do what they did with the 360, and buy the Xbox One S or a heavily reduced priced X, instead of the XB4.

That second element Is I think why MS might go cheap on the weaker console to entice new system purchases instead of the previous generation.

PS4 to PS5 will be an easier transition given the Pro released alongside the S, and not the X, so it has another year and a few months on MS for its super console.  However, if it goes high, which I think is likely, and is at PS3 numbers, with the past-gaming library as its only real library, and given PS4 adoption rates....unless there's a lot of PS2 owners who haven't purchased a console in awhile, and are waiting out the PS5, that will hurt the first few years of sales.  I think it more likely this will be $500, and in that range few consumers even want to purchase.

      ----

      3) Unlike the Wii, the Switch is getting support from 3rd party, and that seems to be picking up.  That will help with future sales, especially given Nintendo's gameplan of continuing the Switch brand for a VERY long time, and backwards compatibility.

Especially in Japan, the current trends, and especially once they release the next tier to compete with Sony and MS (once their sales start going up, likely a year and a half to two years after release), Nintendo will finally release the Switch and Switch Lite Pro.  By that point, if sales are still strong, most developers will use their familiarity with the Switch and need for more cost effective game sales to code for the range of Switch offerings, where the Pro uses higher grade textures and bumps up the resolution.

The Switch right now, is primed to go into the next two years with a continually growing library of new games.  Companies are pulling out a lot more from the system now, and there are improvements on games.

If they can fix the online issues and the drift, and release the Pro at the right time relative to MS and Sony, sales will stay high, and we might see the Switch compete with the PS2 and DS for numbers.

The CPU, GPU, northbridge, southbridge, and memory controller is all in that chip. That is how Tegra works. So "upgrading" the CPU really doesn't really say anything.

Looking into it a bit more. I doubt this is a new "model".

Nvidia doesn't produce the same chips for long. The T210 is no longer being made. The new Switch models (including Lite) use T214. I don't think they are making a massive new Tegra for this. It is just cycling out older hardware for something new and modifying the specs of the system a little bit.

I don't think this is going to be a "pro". Just a slight hardware revision. Which is what all gaming consoles go through in their lifespan.

Switch Pro better support 1080p in handheld mode.

And hopefully 4K docked. A man can dream, right?

    4. ignasia

      ignasia

@Twinkie In this case, I have to agree.  It's too early for a Switch Pro at this point.  Not given system sales are picking up, and games per sale are also much higher than PS4 or XB3.

They'll eventually have to put one out, but only if they're seeing trouble on the horizon due to how many people have purchased the PS5 and XB4.  Until then, they'll just keep doing small hardware revisions as slightly tweaked and upgraded chipset models come out.

It also tracks better with Nintendo's stated plan to keep the Switch going beyond the normal system cycle period.  Eventually leading to new chipsets that allow slower general integration for older system purchasers to buy into the next line at a lower price point than the PS5/XB4, and from there new slight upgrades.  So rather than a true "pro" down the line, more like the next model tegra, but maintaining OS consistency and just beefing up the hardware and range of functionality in the OS to compensate with expanded power.  That would keep things going nicely for a long time.  I just hope they push companies to release patches to upgrade older games on the newer system, ala Sony/MS, instead of playing it the 3DS to New 3DS way.  That would keep interest going for older games as well.

I’d like to see them use that artstyle or something similar for an Oracle of Seasons/Ages remake. It works to bring a Gameboy era game to a new light (in my opinion), and with them remaking Link’s Awakening it kind of makes me think we’ll see the GBC Zelda games remade next.

That reminds me a lot about how Yasunori Mitsuda almost left game music development after Chrono Cross for over-extending his health in service to finishing the soundtrack.  I believe he developed an ulcer?

Then there's Yasumi Matsuno, who quit FF12's production a few months near completion, forcing a few months of extra time for the rest of the team, due to health problems over the stress of completion.

I'm kind of not surprised by that. I still need to see it, but I'm sure it's far better than watching the circle jerk that is Bethesda, after refusing to apologize to their fans, and instead doubling down on being #$*!s in pretending they deserve sympathy because...people are behind the screens, and wow, they have personal stories, some of hardship (like their fans do not, and that somehow excuses their own behaviour, especially when they locked out and destroyed thousands of accounts who were being critical with a positive spin, a desire to see Bethesda fix problems in their games, especially Fallout 76, with VERY little abuse and only a handful of abusive posters...and they know it, so they essentially shat all over their fanbase, and clearly used a paid-for audience, or an audience of numbnut diehard fans who will take a D in the A anyday from Bethesda, with a "thank you sir, I'd like some more...and use spikes next time so I bleed...then pee on the wounds and throw some salt because I will crawl over a lava field for Bethesda no matter what they do to me, my gaming experiences, my friends, and my fellow gamers/guild members.")  Always sad when you have to hire people to clap for a mobile game no fan, not even super fanboys, want.

Sorry, got on a rant, but seriously needed to let that out.  Bethesda is trash, and I think they killed themselves with this last one.  There are three games worth buying though, but they should have focused on that alone, though I can see them as a company shrinking a little, with certain subdivisions seeing profit margins still high (id for instance, plus their French team has what looks like a real gem on their hands).

      ----

Sorry bro, so anyway, back to the topic at hand.  I'm not surprised.  SE really wants the Switch to sell well in the US.  They want to see 1m+ worldwide in total sales, and I think they will see that.  So probably 4m in Japan, maybe 4.2, and 1~1.8m worldwide...I think, depending on how Nintendo handles marketing, the Switch version could see 700k in the US alone, another 600~800k in Europe.  I think 1.4m between the US and Europe is very possible if they focus on it, treat it like a new game.  Actually get some real commercials out, flag it on youtube and facebook for marketing purposes as a priority.  If they do that, this could really do well.  Otherwise 4~500k and 4~500k is more likely for the US and Europe, and the rest of the 1m from other regions.

So in lieu of that, I think SE, especially given there is a Dragon Quest facebook/twitter/youtube, I can see those people, including our own Michi doing some promo work.  Maybe not focusing, but definitely promo work.  At least not focusing until after Builders 2 is over and done with.

I'm hoping Nintendo will also highlight Builders 2.  I'm having SOOOOOOOOOOO much fun with Builders 1.  It's terrible, I'm 30 hours in and still only halfway done with Cantlin.  I've built another tower on top of the city, and created a whole series of upper layers, and a bunch of chests to store gobs and gobs and gobs of minerals and dirt and clay and sand and sandstone, etc.  I've actually carved out the center of several whole sections of several mountain ranges.  The whole inside just gone, lol.  You'd be surprised how many hammers I've made already (about 300 now).  I can't help it.  It's like Lego's in a videogame.  So much fun.  So so so so so much fun.

Anyway, I do really expect to see a bit more help and push from the SE side.  I'm sure this isn't just part of the contract and Nintendo wants help, but rather I think SE really wants to assure the extra costs are more than justified for going all out with the Switch version.

The only thing that bothers me are the number of asshats complaining that they were screwed over on the PS4 version.  Never a good argument, just complaints.  I get some of it, I really do, but if anything they should be happy because we're taking a complete game, and adding a ton of content to it, and content from the version we didn't get.  So #$*! yeah.  That makes me happy, even if I never did plan to buy a Switch, I'm glad to know that version exists.

    2. Dakhil

      Dakhil

Speaking of Bethesda, I find it really sad they even said that "We, like you, like mobile games." (As if a lot of gamers legitimately like playing mobile games that's riddled with microtransactions, lootboxes, etc.)  Too bad Ubisoft was only slightly better than Bethesda.

But anyway, I think there's a good chance Dragon Quest XI S will get proper advertising, considering Square Enix was happy with Octopath Traveler sales on the Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo's responsible for advertising Octopath Traveler outside Japan. And we musn't forget that Nintendo also was responsible for advertising  Dragon Quest IX outside of Japan, and Dragon Quest IX has over a million sales in North America and Europe. So I have cautious hope.

  18. If Erdrick's revealed as the next Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC character tomorrow, I don't know if I can handle seeing a lot of hate thrown at Dragon Quest. Anyway, looking forward to Nintendo's E3 Direct tomorrow.
