      Interesting. Is that a different thing that happens in the remake?  If I recall right, in the old NES version, I believe the Merchant was stuck in jail.

      Is it the green orb? I thought it was yellow. That was what I was referring to earlier. But yeah you're absolutely right Dog, in the original you don't get your merchant back but in the remakes your team gets him/her released from jail.

      Once you get the ship, you can start the newtown quest.  After each orb is gathered you can progress it further.  Once the orb in Newtown is gathered, even in the NES, and speaking to your Merchant in jail, then speaking to the man who started it all, where the Merchant decides to rot in prison, assuming all other orbs are already gathered, leaving town once more and returning will trigger his/her return to Aliahan.  Then just return to the party planning place to retrieve him/her.
