  1. Man I’m tired of hearing about Kingdom Hearts 3. Everywhere I go on the internet lately it’s the only thing I really hear/see about.

Thankfully there aren’t a lot of people here super into KH so at least he still has the Den to call...my sanctuary....

"Come to Eal's Sanctuary, where no one has to talk about Kingdom Hearts."

I want to play KH3, but I need to finish the rest of the series first (my PS4 is currently in storage and my RPG time is going mostly in DQX, with a few scrap hours in DQXI Act 3). That said, KH fans can get pretty annoying... but I've actually not seen much about the series lately. Not any more than I do from any series' new release, at least. Honestly I'm only barely aware that it exists.

  2. I don’t think I’ve messed around in a game as much as I have in Red Dead Redemption 2. At this point it’s gotten to “Story missions? What story missions?”

  3. Strange Journey Redux is giving me a kick in the pants again, just like the original. Man, I wish more Atlus games were this difficult nowadays. I appreciate then challenge....except Macca Beam. That spell is just evil, even by Atlus standards.

  4. Since I’ve been replaying Dragon Quest IV mobile on and off lately, I think it’s time for good old Torneko Taloon to be my profile picture. When I got into the main series games back in 2010 he became a quick favorite of mine.

    1. The Dog of Zahan

      The Dog of Zahan

While I don't like his standalone chapter in IV (I have quite enough experience as a retail drone without simulating it in an RPG, 10-Q), I love what he does in battle in the original game. Best secret weapon against the final boss is when Taloon trips and does a double-crit on them!  He's a good fella.

  5. The Dragon Quest mobile games are on sale along with other Square Enix titles.

That article is wrong.  Only a few of them are on sale (just FFT):

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFVI&hl=en_US
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.chrono&hl=en_US

You'll see there's no sale sign indicator in the above, meaning they have a permanent price reduction, while these next one below will have a sale banner of up to 50% off.

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFT_en2&hl=en_US

Meaning this is far better than a sale.  Most of the mainline series are now permanently reduced in price.  Gamestop didn't pay attention to this detail for some reason, but it's really cool.

Coincidentally, it seems like Sid Meier's Civ V is now a permanent change on the iTunes store.  Doesn't have any temporary information, so it looks like a price change as well.  Pretty cool.  Meaning if they go on sale again, they'll be even cheaper!

Thanks for this. I still need to play VI and I might pick up V just to see how different the “official” version is (only played V PS2)

  6. I have to say, I’m impressed with Red Dead Redemption 2. I wasn’t really sure how much I’d get into the game when I got it for Christmas, but the past few days with it have been fun. Arthur Morgan is a great main character, and I like exploring the world and hunting down animals for new pelts and supplies.

  7. Merry Questmas everyone! Ho ho COR BLIMEY!

  8. With Final Fantasy III now finished, next up will either be Final Fantasy VII, VIII, or X on the “Final Fantasy Games Yangus Needs to Play/Finish,” list. Not sure which one it will be.

I can go back to earlier entries no problem after playing a more recent game. I grew up on N64 games, so graphics of that era are semi-nostalgic whether I played the game as a kid or not. I’m no graphics whore.

I’ll go to FF8 because I don’t feel like starting a new PS4 game (got the HD version of X) and FF7 is low on my backlog priorities list.

    2. The Dog of Zahan

      The Dog of Zahan

Sounds good!  FF8 gets a bad rep, mostly, I think, for the awkward "Draw Magic" system.  This is where you siphon magic elements out of your opponents rather than having an MP pool.  The only problem I had with that is generally, the more powerful the spell, the fewer casts you can suck out of an opponent, adding to the grind.   Still, the game's pretty solid!

    3. ignasia

      ignasia

It's also the junctioning.  Since the toons use what spells they've drawn to augment stats, through special junctioning filters to connect them to those stats when summons are equipped, and because the augmentation has a range of value based on the total number of spells drawn, using magic will reduce overall functionality.

As FF8 is the only FF where enemies literally level up with you (not 100%, but more like ES games where each one has a cap, but generally the game is VERY easy if you play a level 1 game), this can pose a problem for people using standard FF tactics.  You really have to approach battles from a different perspective so as not to overlevel if you're trying to balance yourself, or use spells you don't want to when you don't want to (or if there's limited access to draw points, which often occurs).

Then there's the card game.  BEST mini-game card game in FF history, but it's brutal.  9's is a severely watered down version.  8 has a lot of rules that expand as you progress, and change how you play.  Plus getting a lot of NPCs that can play with you, to play at all is sometimes tricky, some require specific things done in the game first, including sidequests.  Others are limited time access, and through them limited access to rare cards.

Cards in FF8 are also the most significant element in the game.  Mostly because of a particular Summon ability you can learn that allows exchanging them for other resources.  This is also the only way to access certain items, especially Holy Wars, the single most significant item in the game when it comes to late-game boss fights, and even certain uber powerful normal monsters.  On top of a single spell that allows taking triple actions per turn.

The name of this game is...how many limit break attacks can I dish out in any given boss battle, and through that, what cards must I obtain.

I mean you don't HAVE to do these things, but Ultima weapon, and especially Omega weapon are literally impossible without ample Holy Wars and that requires the card game.  Even in a level 1 game (well, Omega...Ultima is possible at levels below 30 without proper setups).

As per normal game bosses, even the end boss (easily the hardest FF final boss), they're not needed.  It does add on a lot of time.  Also limit breaks are tied to weapons.

FF8 is probably THE most guide dang it FF game.  I would argue more than even FF10-2, which requires a guide to complete to 100%, even seeing 80% of the game and getting the best outcomes throughout spira requires a guide.

  9. The King of Fighters XIV is free to play on Steam for a few days. If you have Steam, check it out.

  10. I get to replay the entirety of Suikoden 2 now because I screwed up one little thing that blocked me from the best ending. You’d think recruiting the 108 stars of destiny before a certain point would be enough, but NOPE.

    Goddamn it.

  11. I’m a few days early, but time for Santa hat Yangus! Ho ho COR BLIMEY!

St. Nicholas Day is only a week from tomorrow.

  12. Does anyone here know how well the full game of Dragon Quest Builders runs on Vita? Currently the Vita version is on sale for 50% off, and I wouldn’t mind getting it for that discount.

  13. Anyone else have it when the finally finish a Dragon Quest they get this sad feeling inside that your adventure with the game is over? Yes you could always replay the game, but finally seeing the ending is happy but bittersweet too... 😭

    1. Brother Jaybird

      Brother Jaybird

I imagine completing any game for the first time leaves a touch of the bittersweet. Dragon Quest being more involved than most games, the pang is probably correspondingly harder.

  14. Suikoden 2 is really starting with a bang. I mean, it’s already set up many reasons to hate the main villain, Prince Luca Blight, so well that he may take the cake for “Most psychotic villain.” Not to mention the many improvements in the production values of the game. The sprite work is wonderful for one thing, and the music is once again top notch.

I’m regretting not playing these games sooner.

  15. Suikoden has proven to be quite good. I think I just had to play it some for it to fully click, kind of like when I played Grandia 1. I ended up absolutely loving Grandia 1, and Suikoden 1 is going down that route. Not quite to the level of Grandia 1, but still, I’m very much enjoying the game.

    1. ignasia

      ignasia

There are now rumblings of Suikoden's return.  Either as a remake a set of ports, or a new game.  No idea beyond that.

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

I’d be happy with any of those so long as the potential new game isn’t a mobile exclusive free to play mess.

Now that I’ve finished Suikoden 1, I want to get into this series. I have 2 for my Vita thanks to the PS1 Classic version, but 3-5 may be harder to get.

  16. I wonder why more RPGs outside Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy don’t have examinable pots, dressers, etc.  What little I’ve played of Suikoden 1 so far, several pots/vases scream “Hey, look at this!” in buildings, but nothing.

    1. Brother Jaybird

      Brother Jaybird

      Pokemon has examinable trash cans.

(I wouldn't define Pokemon as a real RPG, though).

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Another thing that bugs me: when you go into houses/buildings in towns and the houses are just big empty spaces save for maybe a bed or another knick knack of some kind.

Trails games at least get around this by making houses and the like more believable with what you find inside them. Makes the world a little more believable.

    3. Brother Jaybird

      Brother Jaybird

The old Medabots also-pseudo-RPG (released for the GBA, technically a remake of the 2nd gen games) allowed you to interact with dressers and cans and the like, but the main character would almost universally refuse to actually examine them and told the player to not be a thief.

  18. Since it’s October and the month of Halloween, I figure it’s appropriate to use a skeleton themed monster. So welcome back to the WhiteKing (or Wight King if you want to use the new translation style) for the month of October! MWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAAAAA!

  19. Freakin’ YouTube’s algorithm spoils the hell out of Dragon Quest XI if you aren’t careful. Or even if you are. I was trying to show a work buddy a cutscene from the game, and the recommended videos showed stuff like “Hidden reference costumes!!!!!” and #$*! like that.

Do people have no consideration for spoiling stuff? If you want to make a video about that, fine, but make your damn video thumbnails not reveal that stuff!

It reminded me of it too, just this time with a power to be dealt with instead of a stooge.

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Not to mention a villain who actively tries to destroy the heroes in the 2nd act a several points/appears a few times before the final fight rather than just hiding out in his tower waiting for you.

Much as I like FF6, they should have had Kefka be a bit more active in trying to deal with the heroes.

    3. ignasia

      ignasia

I don't think Kefka was a stooge.  He's a lot more cold and calculating in the original script.  Woolsey gave him a bit of a wild and erratic spin, that altogether made him seem more like a clown, when the getup was more to do with his warped mind than with him being eccentric.

Yangus.  True, but then Kefka figured no one could challenge him.  He wasn't interested in any particular individuals, as he saw himself as a God, and unlike here, there's no prophesied heroes, no one tied to some greater power who could challenge even if fallen.  FF6's characters were just human, a half-esper, and a magitek infused soldier.  So to his mindset, nothing of note.  He even makes that clear in his speech at the end.  He hates everything, wants to destroy everything.  So essentially it fits better that his divine justice beams are random, and he just allows the monsters he's unleashed to terrorize as he watches, contemplating what place he'll destroy next.

Mordegan is clearly more focused, even if both are psychopaths, and the threat to his power is quite real, as the power he stole can be removed from him due to its connection to the Luminary.  There's no such direct connection to the Goddess statues amongst any of the party members, not even Terra.

  20. Uh oh. Looks like the 100 Token slot machines are finally open in Dragon Quest XI. If you need me, I’ll be gambling away while the fate of the world goes on pause. It’s always so considerate of the big evils in DQ games to wait for you while you’re at the casino.

    1. ignasia

      ignasia

Just so you know, I did list a way to auto-pilot the slots if you want to just rake in infinite coins while you sleep tonight.

  21. Huh....I just realized Erik is left handed. Well, he just got +5 favorite points in my book.

  22. The Nintendo Direct that was supposed to be last week will now be tomorrow, September 13th.

      The Dog of Zahan

I watched it, and I loved much of it.  That the Switch is getting so many FF games, and that awesome looking Daemon X Machina game... this is an exciting time.

  23. I never realized how many Legend of Zelda jingles/songs originate from A Link to the Past. Ganondorf’s theme, the song when you pull the Master Sword...stuff like that. I guess it never really crossed my mind. Kind of a nice “Aha,” moment when you catch something like that.

    1. Brother Jaybird

      Brother Jaybird

Never connected the dots myself, but it makes sense. Link to the Past also introduced the mythic elements that formed the basis for the later franchise.

    2. Liamland

      Liamland

Same thing with Super Metroid to the Metroid series. SNES was a hell of a system.

  24. God I hate Goku Black. Seeing nearly everyone using him online only fuels the fire for my dislike of the character.

    1. The Dog of Zahan

      The Dog of Zahan

Is it just that everybody's using him, or that he's another iteration of the "Mirrorverse evil twin" schtick, and not even a very good one at that?  That's my take on him, anyway.

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

You fight against Goku Black and you’ll understand why he sucks to deal with. Safe normals are one such annoyance when dealing with him.

  25. So it turns out Broly’s blue color scheme in DB FighterZ looks really similar to the Sage class from Dragon Quest III. All he needs is some blue hair and we’d have ourselves Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan Sage.

    1. BorisTheWizard

      BorisTheWizard

And when he becomes a god in the upcoming movie we get to refer to him as SSJSGSSJS

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

What does the J stand for in “SSJ,” anyway?

And funny enough, last night at work we were trying to figure out which character would have the longest name.

    3. BorisTheWizard

      BorisTheWizard

Saiyan in Japanese is spelled Saiyajin. I've heard people throw the j in the acronym because SS Goku/Vegeta/whatever sounds like a boat name.
