  1. A new FromSoftware game was teased tonight...

Please be Bloodborne 2, please be Bloodborne 2, PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE let it be Bloodborne 2...!

    1. eal

      eal

You should give Nioh a go. It's Bloodborne in every way but asethetics. It's fuedal Japan. It's derivative but the good kind.

    2. TheKingOfTheDragovians

      TheKingOfTheDragovians

Nioh's also more level based as opposed to Bloodborne.

    3. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Yeah, the level by level based system is like Demon Souls. I've thought about Nioh, just haven't looked into it.

  2. Darkeater Midir may be the hardest superboss I've had to deal with. He hits like a truck, has tons of health, is surprisingly fast...oh, and he's a giant nightmare dragon who lives at the end of existence.

What I have gotten myself into...

Wow, he looks like a rather intense fight.

Hmm...sure, why not.  Just remember you'll need to grow two horns on either side of your head, and adorn yourself with purple robes and a strange headdress.

Then again, Skyrim alone makes a man a lord of Dragons, though perhaps not a DragonLord?

    3. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Purple robes sound wonderful. Hopefully I don't get the weird blue skin problem the DragonLord and Hargon have...maybe green or purple instead...

Sadly i cant fight becuse i dont have ds3 i want to fight this boss who has moves like kalaamet from ds1 who i have fought

  3. Dragon Quest Rhythm has been a lot of fun. It’s been easy enough(ish) to navigate through the game’s menus. Luckily the layouts are very similar to the Final Fantasy ones on the 3DS, so that helps with navigation. Naturally the first character I chose was Yangus. Oh, the heroes of DQ4 and 7 were picked as well, and that Puklipo fella from DQ10.

I’ll post my full thoughts thus far on the game tomorrow.

  4. Freakin’ YouTube’s algorithm spoils the hell out of Dragon Quest XI if you aren’t careful. Or even if you are. I was trying to show a work buddy a cutscene from the game, and the recommended videos showed stuff like “Hidden reference costumes!!!!!” and #$*! like that.

Do people have no consideration for spoiling stuff? If you want to make a video about that, fine, but make your damn video thumbnails not reveal that stuff!

It reminded me of it too, just this time with a power to be dealt with instead of a stooge.

    3. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Not to mention a villain who actively tries to destroy the heroes in the 2nd act a several points/appears a few times before the final fight rather than just hiding out in his tower waiting for you.

Much as I like FF6, they should have had Kefka be a bit more active in trying to deal with the heroes.

    4. ignasia

      ignasia

I don't think Kefka was a stooge.  He's a lot more cold and calculating in the original script.  Woolsey gave him a bit of a wild and erratic spin, that altogether made him seem more like a clown, when the getup was more to do with his warped mind than with him being eccentric.

Yangus.  True, but then Kefka figured no one could challenge him.  He wasn't interested in any particular individuals, as he saw himself as a God, and unlike here, there's no prophesied heroes, no one tied to some greater power who could challenge even if fallen.  FF6's characters were just human, a half-esper, and a magitek infused soldier.  So to his mindset, nothing of note.  He even makes that clear in his speech at the end.  He hates everything, wants to destroy everything.  So essentially it fits better that his divine justice beams are random, and he just allows the monsters he's unleashed to terrorize as he watches, contemplating what place he'll destroy next.

Mordegan is clearly more focused, even if both are psychopaths, and the threat to his power is quite real, as the power he stole can be removed from him due to its connection to the Luminary.  There's no such direct connection to the Goddess statues amongst any of the party members, not even Terra.

  5. Happy New Year, all! Let's hope the year is full of new quests for all of us! Maybe there will even be some dragons along the way!

Since Dark Souls III has become a new favorite, I figure it was fitting to make my new profile picture Greirat the Thief for three reasons: he's one of my favorite NPCs, he's a cool thief character (much like a certain bandit), and is a loyal friend/ally to the player character who will risk his neck to help out.

Oh, and he's got the rockin' blue hat.

  6. How I feel about my DQ7 symphonic suite order being cancelled on me:

  7. I get to replay the entirety of Suikoden 2 now because I screwed up one little thing that blocked me from the best ending. You’d think recruiting the 108 stars of destiny before a certain point would be enough, but NOPE.

    Goddamn it.

  8. I know I’ve only had Dragon Ball FighterZ for a few days, but honestly I really regret not getting this game sooner. It’s like a new Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, just with Dragon Ball characters.

Maybe someday I’ll get a Tatsunoko vs. Capcom 2, but for now, this game is a very fun substitute.

  9. I’m starting to get back into the Final Fantasy series. It’s thanks to Theatrhythm Curtain Call actually. I might finally get around to playing (and actually beating) Final Fantasy III this time.

I’ve forgotten how great FF5’s soundtrack was too. Easily one of the most overlooked soundtracks by Uematsu.

      The Dog of Zahan

FF5 has great music, I agree.  Some of it shines above that of FF4, and some is outshined by that game, but all is good!

  10. If I ever see anyone complain about Mario Kart 150 CC AI difficultly again, I’m going to tell them, “Well, it could be Super Mario Kart difficult,” because #$*! me the AI are a bunch of cheaters in SMK 150CC.

I’d rather be fighting the Laurence the First Vicar or playing Battletoads than deal with this.

Yes...yes it is.  Mario Kart Wii took awhile for me to get used to with the removal of jumping in favour of...what's that tactic?  Skidding?  POWER SLIDING!  That's it.  I still haven't mastered that technique.  I used to be awesome especially on the N64 with learning the right points to jump to get ahead of anyone, or jump the tracks.  Mostly for Rainbow Road, but yeah, the Wii version's AI is brutal, and they cheat given how often they get the super shell when I'm in the lead, or the lightning bolt that shrinks everyone.  Same with the DS version.  I'm in the back, and unless I'm in last place, maybe 1 in 100 item boxes gives me either of those two.  I get 3 mushrooms often, or a star often.  Or the Ink often.

Even more ridiculous when whoever is in 2nd bloody place gets the Lightning Bolt, and gets it often.  Like...really?  Just because I'm half a track away?  Then he passes me just as I'm unshrinking, usually just in time to stomp me into the ground while the small effect is still in play.  LOL.  Bloody bastard cheap AI.

Though for the DS version, it's more like, "did you meet the wall yet?  No?  Should've brought some cake and champagne!  Sucker!"  "See that fire pit/hole/water beneath you?  I'm going to smash into you so you land on it and crash out of bounds!  Have a nice day!"

    3. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Mario Kart DS’s 150CC AI was easy to deal with. I mean, when I got it Christmas 2005 I ended up getting gold on every CC cup in like....4 days. Took a long time to get Triple Stars on every cup/speed class, but eventually I did.

I did end up getting gold in all the 150 CC cups in Super Mario Kart. Koopa, my Mario Kart good luck charm, helped me secure the win on the Special Cup.

The easiest Mario Kart AI by far on the higher cups was Mario Kart 8’s. I Triple Starred nearly every cup on the first try, only needing to repeat the Special, Leaf, and Lightning cups. 200CC was another story, but 150CC was pretty easy.

    4. Brother Jaybird

      Brother Jaybird

@ignasia, the way I recall how to do the powerslide is, once you've set the direction you're trying to turn (i.e. left or right), set the control stick in the opposite direction (i.e. right or left) for a moment and then in the direction you're trying to go again to get the first level boost, and then do the same for the second boost.

@Yangus, I only ever got one star on everything in Wii, at which point I decided that was good enough for me.

  11. Is it possible to beat Orochi in DQ3 without at least Midheal? Cause my party of hero, warrior, martial artist, and merchant (level 21-24) are having a hell of a time fighting her. They can do good damage, but the stronger fire attack just does too much damage and I don’t know where I could find fire resistant gear for everyone (or most everyone).

Might have to break and use the Words of Wisdom book on someone so they can become a sage.

I'll link you to my FAQ anyway...it's not 100% up to date, as I need to update it to the current version:

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

I ended up using my Words of Wisdom on my merchant. Got him to level 16 for midheal. I did fine after that. If I had remembered how to get the Ultimate Key sooner, I might have gotten some Dragon Shields.

Heh, glad you got through it anyhow.

  12. Managed to get the Aloy armor set (based on the lead character of Horizon: Zero Dawn) in Monster Hunter: World. It's really weird to see my character (based on Sir Mervyn from Dragon Quest VII) suddenly turn into Aloy. Only a game from Japan, I guess.

Still, I'm glad I managed to snag this HZD content. Hopefully when the event quests are recycled I can snag the Watcher outfit for my Palico.

  13. Nice! Ni no Kuni II received an update that allows you to choose a Hard or Expert mode, along with some other changes! Nice to see the developers are offering a better challenge now. As much as I loved NNK2, it was definitely an easy game.

  15. Since I’ve been in a Falcom mood, I’m going to use the Yangus of Falcom games for a profile picture: Dogi, Adol’s adventuring friend from the Ys series.

Now if only he had his own equivalent to COR BLIMEY!

    1. ignasia

      ignasia

Dogi the Wallcrusher at your service!

That's more or less the only consistent turn of phrase he uses that I recall.  Indeed, no innately funny line, as it requires delivery and demonstration for the punch line to really work as comedy.

I guess you can just go...Oh Yeah!

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

Haha. Now I want to see Dogi burst through a wall while I’m running through an area in Ys 8 and shout “Oh yeah!”

  16. Suikoden 2 is really starting with a bang. I mean, it’s already set up many reasons to hate the main villain, Prince Luca Blight, so well that he may take the cake for “Most psychotic villain.” Not to mention the many improvements in the production values of the game. The sprite work is wonderful for one thing, and the music is once again top notch.

I’m regretting not playing these games sooner.

  18. The Dragon Quest mobile games are on sale along with other Square Enix titles.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gamespot.com/amp-articles/killer-deals-on-civ-6-final-fantasy-9-chrono-trigg/1100-6464044/

      ignasia

That article is wrong.  Only a few of them are on sale (just FFT):

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFVI&hl=en_US
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.chrono&hl=en_US

You'll see there's no sale sign indicator in the above, meaning they have a permanent price reduction, while these next one below will have a sale banner of up to 50% off.

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFT_en2&hl=en_US

Meaning this is far better than a sale.  Most of the mainline series are now permanently reduced in price.  Gamestop didn't pay attention to this detail for some reason, but it's really cool.

Coincidentally, it seems like Sid Meier's Civ V is now a permanent change on the iTunes store.  Doesn't have any temporary information, so it looks like a price change as well.  Pretty cool.  Meaning if they go on sale again, they'll be even cheaper!

Thanks for this. I still need to play VI and I might pick up V just to see how different the “official” version is (only played V PS2)

LOL, would have helped to have given the new title: Etrian Odyssey X.  Given most people would be totally confused given there's no EO VI at least in title.  The FINAL EO game, unless Nintendo decides on another dual-screen console.

      http://www.siliconera.com/2018/04/09/etrian-odyssey-x-announced-3ds-series-crossover-title-august-2-japan/

If they do continue the series, it will be without the map making feature, which would be damn hard to pull off in a single screen.  Still, they've done much to expand the regular gameplay, that it shouldn't matter the lack of a map making feature, just have it open up as the party explores.

I'm really liking the design aesthetic of the new Hero class.  I still need to get EO V.

    2. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

It's not going to be the final Etrian game. It's just the last one planned for a dual screen system.

      https://nintendoeverything.com/atlus-working-on-new-etrian-odyssey-teased-as-last-entry-using-a-bottom-screen-on-3ds/

The speculation right now is that when the series gets to the Switch, it will feature a map on the screen that you can shrink or grow depending on what you're doing, or it will be placed to a particular button for easy access.

I know the series will continue on. The Etrian team has always done well with adapting to new hardware, or advancing forward with new gameply ideas and implementations to the core of the series. I'm sure the lack of dual screens on Switch will really alter a few aspects, but not harm the base of what makes the series so great. If anything, I'd love to see what the team is capable of doing with the Switch hardware!

That makes me feel better.  EO's approach to class mechanics makes it one of the best tactical RPG systems ever made.

  21. The Nintendo Direct that was supposed to be last week will now be tomorrow, September 13th.

I watched it, and I loved much of it.  That the Switch is getting so many FF games, and that awesome looking Daemon X Machina game... this is an exciting time.

  22. Welp, now I HAVE to get a Switch. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (aka Monster Hunter XX) will be arriving on August 28th in the west! I knew Capcom wouldn't skip out on releasing the game in the west!

Ah, so the grinding complaints are real then. I've heard reviews mention that, but I just assumed it was reviewers only saying that because it's an RPG.

I only ask because the PSN version I got came with the Crimson Court expansion. Haven't looked too much into it other than the new playable class that came with it.

    3. BorisTheWizard

      BorisTheWizard

I don't know if the PSN version gives you the option of turning off the DLC, but I would highly recommend it if it's your first playthrough. It adds a mechanic that forces you to do the DLC area, and punishes you if you try to ignore it.

Also, as far as the grinding goes, (minor spoiler)

Completing any level of the Darkest Dungeon (the in-game dungeon of said name, not the game itself) gives all surviving members a debuff that no longer lets them enter the Darkest Dungeon. It basically means that you need a minimum of 16 max level characters to finish the game. I've heard they've added a new difficulty that reduces the grinding somewhat, but I don't know to what extent.

    4. YangustheLegendaryBandit

      YangustheLegendaryBandit

The PSN version lets you choose to make the DLC part of the game. Also it has different difficulty levels. Wasn't really sure which was which (and didn't even know they were difficulty options until later!) so I just chose the first difficulty.

Also the Shieldbreaker DLC came out. It's not part of that, but it's a fun new class.
