  1. Ugh I don't know how to use this new fangled forum, like quote selectively n #$*!. Dwaine thanks for the wordy response, it saved me a ton of time researching and your even handedness. I usually just seem to trigger people 😛. Mission accomplished! Yeah I did recall that Japan has an ultra nationalistic can do no wrong streak. The comment was pretty nasty and the reaction calling for his death was really not the best approach to changing hearts and minds either. Just annoying that video games has to put up with the mixing of whatever politics that someone does on their own time. And what what 8-4 is gone? No one told me that. I may just have to get back into the game. What new DQ titles are out that aren't translated with a 2nd grader in mind? I'm still contemplating inserting party chat into DW4 NES, though my spare time kinda sucks nowadays.
  2. Ugh don't me started on this. Oh well too late. If you are easily offended please look away. So I'm guessing what happened is the following: Some nothing loser video game "journalist" NPC combs what xe considers far-right Japanese TV show for dirt to gain notoriety. Maybe it is far right but it's hard to get an objective look at things in another language, and I don't trust most "journalist". Plus one of those a-holes dissed my DQ5r translations so their taste is clearly questionable! Sugi baby said something bad about a protected class with a very powerful and rich lobbying group. (Bad move, should have said it about white straight males, you'd be a hero!) Said group agitates cowardly video game corporation. Corporation bends over and apologies like a #$*!. Dragon Quest has 99 problems, but Sugiyama isn't one of them. Most of the 99 is the shitty localizer (if it still 8-4) and the other issue is injecting western "values" so not to offend. I'm specifically talking about the changing of crosses and the censoring of a character in DQ9 physical appearance. I'm sure there's more but I don't remember them at the moment. When I play a game made by a Japanese company its partially to escape the current lameness and thinskinness of the US culture. The more DQ is sanitized, the more cookie cutter it becomes. I don't care about SJWizm and I refuse to be forced to care. Oh, and keep on whaling! Just in case this is TL;DR, here is everything I said in a nutshell: Get woke, go broke.
  3. Lo. I got me a Snes classic (well 2 snes classics and 1 nes classic and 1 playstation classic.) and I used hakchi2 to load DW4 with the below game genie codes hardcoded. Everything seemed fine with disabling tactics with "Try out" (well except for inconsistent spell screen flashes, donno what's up with that) until I met up with Chaos dolls in chapter 5. If a character got confused and took a turn the game crashed with a C7 error. I tested out picking "Use no mp" tactic but had the same issue, so I thought it was nintendo's emulator, clover-kachikachi-wr. So I spent considerable time figuring out how to load the save to NEStopia. But after all that it still crashes, except this time it's a blank screen and a hum if I recall correctly. So then I thought that maybe it's the codes. So I loaded a clean DW4 rom with the same savestate I was using. I went to Santeem (yeah I used the classic name, suck it 8-4) with the Hero by herself and then her and Brey and neither getting confused crashed the game. My theory (guess) is that since you can't get confused in chapter 1-4 (I think) the command input you use does not have a corresponding confuse override. The calling of the confuse routine that does not exist causes the crash. I did not try the following code listed on gamefaqs, though: YYEXVTGE Thoughts? DWEdit post below: The game checks the chapter number at various times to determine whether you have control of your party or not. It also uses the same check to determine if the Change Tactics menu item should exist. So I changed the code to use the selected tactics to determine party control instead of chapter number. Use these two codes to allow party control whenever "Try Out" tactics are selected: LIEXUVZS - Determine Party Control by selected tactics instead of chapter number EYEXNTEI - Control your party if "Try Out" is selected instead of "Try Out" NOT being selected. But these have the side effect of removing the Change Tactics menu item if you have "Try Out" selected as your tactics. So here's a code to force there to be a Change Tactics command: PAOUYTAA - Force "Change Tactics" to appear in the tactics menu, but has the side effect of adding dummy menu items. Finally, if you try to give the party AI control in chapters before 5, it will fail. The characters will just sit around assessing the situation. This code forces AI control to work in the earlier chapters: AEKEVAGA - Fix AI control for chapters less than 5 Of course, a real Game Genie only lets you pick three codes at a time. One last thing... If you set the AI to "Try Out" when in a battle, you will need to select Fight, then back out to control your party, and changing tactics from "Try Out" to something else will leave trails on the map, open the status screen to get rid of them.

Also looks like there was some typo correction in the 3ds version.   5. Oh yeah sure, I really wanted to be careful in my criticism. If I has a volunteer to de-accent the script and also target some of the place changes I wouldn't mind that. Though otherwise the PS version is already done and it's something I can do with minimal assistance. Hmmm, who could possibly help with that sorta localization.

I did fine a version with the symphonic tracks inserted back in, it's named "Dragon Quest 7 US - UNDUB - SYMPHONIC" Anyway the main reason I am posting is to say I seriously tried giving it a chance. The dialogue to start was OK. Using Pilchard instead of fish wasn't too bad, though it was beaten to death. I did get annoyed at the overuse of kipper, wta is that? The Scottish accent wasn't too bad either, it seemed to fit well. Then I got to the town formerly known as "Dialac" and things just went to hell. The dialogue was so thick with a fake germanic accent that I had to strain my mind to understand what was being said. Before I tried to annoy the other party members by ignoring instructions for what I should do next and just chatting with all the NPCs, but now it seemed like a chore. Enough was enough, so I am making an extractor/inserter so I can put in the PS version of the translation where available. While the Playstation translation admittedly has errors due to the size, time constraints (and money?) but out of all the localization before and after it seemed like the best mix of keeping the original power of the story while having some localizing. I will have to adjust some of the names that were shortened due to coding limitations and maybe run a spell checker on it too. I already have a FPT extractor which is step one. So I do have a full script dump but I'm assuming either I gave out the script or someone else made an extractor. Step two is I need to match the English version with the Japanese text in Eden no Senshitachi 3DS. Having some issues tracking the 3DS Japanese version down though. Step 3/4 I think is already done, match the PS version English and Japanese. Then step 5 is to match the Japanese in both the PS and 3DS and replace the English in the 3DS version with the associated English in the PS version.Usually there is very little change in the Japanese versions so unless it's a new added feature it should match up nicely. Then of course there's cleanup and menus and tag differences etc, but that's not so hard.
  7. Yah, just need a lil direction and a lil push. ^.^ Though depending on how legit the reports are DQ7 may still require a tweak.... Midi? Ugh! I'm doing better. Had some health issues that sound scarier than they are. Soon though I'll be makin some coin and feeling even better I'm really out of the loop.... I thought DQ7 3DS was already out. o.x

If SE would have sent one for DQ5r PS2 that would have been "great news", but I think they really didn't care because it was a version that had no chance of release outside of Japan. I'm regaining my enjoyment of life now (I think I can now look past a localization that tries way too hard) so I might even give DQ7 3ds a whirl. Wondering if the legit cart would run on a 3ds with arm9loaderhax...
  9. After pressing send while using the quick (not full) messager in firefox I just see the slime sending animation continue indefinitely. When I open another tab and check if the message was sent it appears as if it did. kthxgoal. Edit: Ok it finally did dismiss, though not sure if it was after a long period of time or if it was triggered by me posting this bug report.

What, Phantasy Quest VII? lol Hey Tom, you were part of DQTranslations, right? Is there anything you can do about the DQTranslations site being down? How long was it down? Damarsman would be the guy to ask. Also I need a DQ7 3ds um, hookup *hack*cough*hinthinthint*.

  15. Hm mm I'm going to need to look at the actual ROM when I find it. While earlier in the thread there is some technical chat on the fpt0 format I usually have to actually see the binary to understand it. I'll need to look exactly how DQ7 3DS organizes the text vs how the PSX version does it. Right now there is too much variance in textbox size to align it properly. I did do some work with DQ9 (turned the punny puns down from 11 to a 4.5) and it used a lot of different encoding methods and the MPT0 "format". Optimally it would be best to be able to add/subtract text boxes and change pointers so that all the text fits and looks nice and pretty. Oh, and if we can get it to align properly I have a cross reference list from DQ7 PSX. It appears to be debug but it might help with "Dragon Quest VII 3DS: Scenario Titles Translations".   16. Maybe it has to do with DQ6. You know that one quote that pops up and says "We gotta save the cow!" Let's just say instead of a puff puff, you get a mooff mooff. It's from DW7, but they said that puff puff is just "Sounding a horn". Not sure about cows though.

  19. When I worked on DQ5 PS2 (and my side trips with DQ 4-6,9) I made heavy use of Japanese-English cross referencing. Even though you still need translators, there is a ton of common items, equipment, and general textboxes that are word for word reused. The less time translators are doing boring dry "Welcome to my crappy shop!" lines. the more productive they'll be. As for the new lines in DQ7 3DS I may be able to make a context report like I did for DQ4-6 DS. For each room I would list who is in the room, and for each text box I list who is talking and who is in proximity. This cuts down on fixing gender and relationship errors, since you can see inside the room, per say.

If i recall correctly, the he guy in charge of the mobile ports(/remakes) said some time ago something like VII needed a new translation like I-III got, to get in touch with the "Dragon Quest" branding instead of "Dragon Warrior". I wonder if he saw how huge the DQ7/DW7 script is. I guess they could do something foolish and take out party chat. :E I suspect the only real possibility is a fan translation for 7. Edit: I took a look at my ripped script that has all duplicate blocks removed. There are 43951 text blocks in the PSX version that were translated. o.O
  21. Unfortunately the post 2004 changes are probably why 7 won't get remade. DW7 has a ton of text and I'm surprised we even got the spelling error ridden PSX version. Just updating the shortened spell names, toss in the new style spells and run it through Word spell checker and SE could possibly turn a profit. The new localization style doesn't seem to be a net positive and is in no way sacred.
