Ending suck x100 now with that last spoiler. I hadn't heard that part yet. The day after I started the online petition for it, I read the spoilers and it immediately made me want to pull the plug. Without saying it here for all to see, yeah, that really sucks. It cheapens the whole Dragon Questness of the movie. If that's the entire message and plot, basically you just screwed with the most cinematical, cohesive, lovely story just to prove a point & send a message. If that's the point, do it via some other proprietary series. Bleh, sucks they licensed out the name for that.

Forward There was a group of Japanese screeners who were so horrified by the ending, they leaked it. Ever since reading it, it's just cemented my disdain for the movie. They also ignored one little nugget as well, though probably because not as many Japanese gamers would take an issue with it, due to social stigma and constant repetition of it:

Both of these ideas are strange choices, particularly for the first DQ feature film, particularly when riding high on its high-fantasy legacy at the moment. DQ5 has reentered top ten sales figures in Japan in the wake of this film release. These two choices feel, to me, like pulling punches and not completely trusting the audience to love Dragon Quest simply and purely for being Dragon Quest. Personally, I think that’s someone’s miscalculation, and I hope they don’t do it again. Of course, I don’t actually know the reasoning and I haven’t seen it for myself, but that’s my hot take. Also, @Plattym3 and @ignasia, I’d say you’re both right. Consoles definitely went through a decline. I have no statistics and am not interested in the research, so everything I say is based on my lived experience, my friends, and the kids and adults I’ve taught: PS2 dominance was, I think, a point of pride to Japanese gamers. There was a real love and respect for Sony, like with Nintendo and Sega before them. Sega had faded, and it took Nintendo a while to establish that “old Nintendo feeling” with the DS/3DS. Xbox never really took off here (yes, understatement), but awareness of the console wars and trends toward handheld took some luster off PS3, I think. PS4 seems to have more momentum, in part I imagine because 3DS era has been in slowdown for a long time. And then there’s Switch. Switch is why I think you’re both right. I believe before Switch Japan was actually headed for death of consoles. Japanese gamers and the casual public have fully embraced mobile. Many still loved their 3DS, but I stopped seeing them out and about probably…three(?) years ago? Switch has not only filled that gap (though I basically never actually see people playing it in public), but (I feel) reinvigorated the entire industry. Switch feels like Famicom-era gaming. It had a freshness and fun vibe that transcends even the 3DS, I think. I hope they get on integrating 3DS-level social features and UI before the momentum fades! Also… everybody has Switch. I teach kids now, and literally all of them have it. I know several adults who have it or want it. Switch has a feel good factor that is definitely revitalizing interest and somehow making public gaming okay again, rather than public shaming. I think there may be more Switch playing on trains and in public again as the Lite and better-battery Switches release this autumn. I hope so. That’s the real test. I used to never get on a train and not see people on their 3DS/2DS/DS, with occasional Vita and PSP. It’s still all phones on the trains at the moment, but I do think that may be Switching.😉

Whilst it's nice that Dragon Quest gets more exposure in the West due to Super Smash Bros Ultimate, there's still a long way to go before Dragon Quest becomes mainstream in the West.

If the Switch version weren't around the corner then I would say that they're allowed to spoil whatever they wish...its been a year, etc. But you're right, a lot of people have been holding off for this version. They should have had a spoiler section at the end of the podcast. That said, the DQ community is pretty insular, and I feel like Puff Puff Hour has been more of a "retrospective" look at the series. They're used to reviewing decades-old games...it's not every year we get a new DQ game. If you're new to the series then spoilers will abound for many of the games in DQ communities. Though I agree that, even though we're almost a year in since release, XI should be treated differently since the Definitive Edition has yet to be released. Sent from my LG-H871 using Tapatalk

That’s my reasoning for why I like “in the zone” better, too. Also, visually in the game, pepped up characters don’t look like excited cheerleaders; they look like they’ve entered a kind of meditative state. They also share that mind space with other characters who have entered that same state/space, literally in the zone. Pep Powers are performed, to my mind, in that virtual meditative space. That’s why only the characters who have entered that state are visible and that’s why the over-the-top animations are almost like dream sequences. They are literally in the zone. But whatever, it’s fine. It is what it is. As for spell names, it’s gonna take me some getting used to, but I actually like it. It’s more like the Japanese and gives DQ a distinctive voice and tone. It will be an adjustment, but it’s one I’m happy to make. For characters, I just think of them all as having surnames: Jade Martina Rab Lau Erik Camus, etc… This might not work for everybody, but it’s good enough for me. And it makes sense, too, that in the Japanese version, they’d use their surname as their social name.

Ogden! Love those games! This was my progress from like 3 days ago because I find I’m more likely to keep playing if I don’t post that I’m playing something until I’m decently deep into the game. I’m at level 20, equipped with all the best weapons currently available, and defeated the third boss. I like how speedy the fights are, makes level and money grinding a quick affair. It’s a good pastiche of Dragon Quest IV. I’d love to see their take on V.

From my understanding it’s the same for the mobile versions of I and II. They are based on phone ports too. I liked played III on my phone, but it lacking a lot of the features from the Super Nintendo and GBC versions makes it a bit hard for me to return to the mobile version. I do like the new localization script, though.

At Fan Expo Boston for the day. The first thing I did was get into Dan Slott’s line to get some books signed because the last time I tried to get into his line at a convention, it was just after Peter Parker came back and the wait was ridiculous. I succeeded in meeting him today and he signed ASM #655, which got me into reading modern comics. Dude was really friendly. Met a couple other artists but that was probably the most significant. More in line with this forum’s interests, I did also met the voice of Zelda in Breath of the Wild and she signed my Wii U copy!

Yeah, that makes sense. I've definitely drifted back and forth over the years, but those games hold some nostalgia for me, so I'm hoping to find time to buy and play them. If there is one I am looking forward to most, it's Baldur's Gate.

Thanks. Fixed it. Just narratively, it’s such a feeling of achievement to make that happen. I hope they do it! I hope you’re right, and if it happens, I hope the male options feel just as celebratory as the wedding options. It would solve a criticism I’ve seen a lot, that there isn’t enough variety in the music. Also, this game is shaping up to be an intro to the series for a lot of players over the past couple of years. Exposure to past games is smart business sense. I think it could happen, but they’re heavily advertising VIII and only VIII. It would be an incredible surprise if they do it, definite hype bomb. Amazing! I’m so happy to hear this! The Medal Academy is already dear to me because my LE Switch preorder bonus includes a room key holder from the school! Can’t win ‘em all. Expectations appropriately tempered. I live in Japan, but I’m satisfied with the Definitive Edition. I’d only care about the 3D if it looked like the Switch/PS4/PC version. I hadn’t thought of it til you posted, but yeah, maybe I can use 2D to go to any little islands I can’t get to in 3D. Though I’d like to see everything in 3D. This game world is crazy beautiful! I figured. I’ll not expect this. This was perhaps the most important to me. Thank you for confirming this! Fun! I’ll be on the lookout! Do you mean the Companion’s Compendium that came with the “Edition of Light”? No one is selling it separately, so it’s not worth it to me. Also, I’d expect the Japanese artbook to be Definitive anyway. I’ve already got the packaging from the Japanese PS4/3DS Dual Pack. The Cloth Map is also being sold separately here, though it says “Map of Dragon Quest XI” instead of “Map of Erdrea”. It’s annoying, but not a dealbreaker. Plus there’s the gorgeous faux leather Switch case. I’m kind of putting together my own LE. Yeah, maybe. I might just try to make it myself. You’re in Japan, too? Cool. I’ve never even seen photos of it, so I thought they hadn’t made it at all yet. I’ll keep an eye out. I’m not exactly complaining or whining. I just really do think “in the zone” is better. But it’s true, Horii-san approved it, so I can just accept it. EDIT: I also want those cool Slime hapi and yukata from the 2019 Summer Matsuri as in-game wearables in multiple colors! And the aloha shirts! They could make quick cash by just selling me outfits and poses as DLC forever. That’s how excited I am for Photo Mode with this cast! I want all the fun seasonal content that DQX and DQB get! Like Santa hats with Slime pom poms or clips or something. I doubt this is happening, but Photo Mode is new for the series, right? So maybe? They could have all of my money… And some kind of weather-altering charms/spells or something, so I can make it rainy/snowy/foggy/misty/sunny etc, any time, anywhere. Even if it only works in Photo Mode. Oh! Maybe a Cowbell that changes the weather depending how many times you hit it! That would seem to integrate well with two existing game elements. That would be awesome! Imagine if we could make a small garden and grow Seeds! I feel certain this would’ve been announced if it had any chance of happening. And a Photo Album in-game! Bonus points for “only limit is your memory card and saved to card”. More bonus points for sharing online! Extra bonus points if in addition to being accessible from your menu any time, it’s also an item you can pick up

To celebrate the upcoming Legend of the Ancient Dragon expansion, I thought I'd post this topic detailing everything I know about DQX's story. Beware of spoilers. So, our story takes place in the world of Astoltia, known for its 6 main areas: Ogreed, Eltona, Dwachakka, Puku Land, the Wena Islands, and Rendashia. We start off as a random Human (we'll call him/her X) living in Etene, a small village in Rendashia. One day, the village is attacked by a strange guy with a scythe who calls himself Hades Nelgel. Wanting to get rid of a prophecied "heaven-sent child," the jerk burns down the village, kills everyone (including X), and seals Rendashia in a dark barrier. However, thanks to the power of a magic flower X had at the time, (s)he is brought back to life in the body of a random corpse that just recently died. (The Ogre froze to death. The Weddie was killed in a sword fight that was supposed to be a friendly spar. The Elf.....misfired a death spell? Someone correct that for me. The Puklipo......woke up in his/her coffin in a carriage. I'm pretty sure the dialogue did some explaining, but I can't read Japanese. The Dwarf........I don't know. I can't find the intro scene for Dwarves anywhere.) After some adventuring, X meets a sage who claims that he can help, but only after X gathers 6 sacred emblems. X does so, but is constantly tortured by visions of Hades Nelgel taunting him/her from afar. When the sage fails to break through the barrier, he tries to find help from a gal named Furukka, but she's a failure in whatever she does. Desperate, the sage pulls X from his/her body, which results in him/her meeting the corpse's original owner. X learns that the only thing that can penetrate Hades Nelgel's barrier is the Ark of the Heavens, a sacred vessel that was last seen 500 years ago. X travels back in time, witnesses some political problems between the Ogres and Humans, and despite defeating a demon named Razban, is unable to foil his ultimate plan (bringing Hades Nelgel to life). X finally makes it past the barrier, and climbs to Hades Nelgel's throne room, but doesn't account for the final trick up his sleeve. However, the trap fails, and the two finally battle square off, mano a mano. X wins and manages to escape, but Hades Nelgel's barrier remains intact. Using a magic compass, X makes it through the barrier into Rendashia, where (s)he has to find a "sleeping hero" who should, in theory, be able to ultimately destroy the barrier. On the way, X meets an (amnesiac?) girl who is trying to head to the kingdom of Gran Zedora. However, the road is blocked off to anyone who doesn't have 3 sacred butterflies, compliments of Princess Anlucea. X rounds up the butterflies, and meets the princess, who is actually an imposter, with the girl from earlier being the real Anlucea. The rest is mostly my guessing, but..........Anlucea turns out to be the "sleeping hero," and helps you defeat Hades Nelgel's boss, Great Satan Madesagora. If you have stuff to add here, don't be shy to post.

The other day on the DataHoarder subreddit, somebody posted an archive of around 90 GB of video game commercials dating backing to the 80s through to modern consoles. I looked through them and pulled out only the DQ ads as I thought someone here might want them. They aren't all very good quality, many of them having been captured from VHS and then compressed digitally, but for many of them I imagine they're the only copies in existence. There are Japanese as well as international commercials. Many of them, like some of the EU DQIX commercials I had never seen before. Here's an upload if somebody wants them, or if @Woodus wants them for the site. They're organized by game system in different directories. Around 180 video files at about 1.5 GB total zipped. https://www.mediafire.com/file/ucc8u3wx1wizd3p/DQ_Commercials.7z/file

Speaking of Joker 2 Monster Guide Book. It's one of my greatest gaming mysteries what happened to it. I bought it shortly after moving in with my wife. It was freaking bright yellow. It got lost 1/2 way through the game. Thought we'd find it when we moved 2.5 years later. Nope. Last I saw it, it was next to the bed. Goner.

Thank you very much! I had quite a surprise on my un-birthday. On DQX, they threw a surprise party for me. I'd like to share the card that Meimei, a player in Japan, mailed to me!
