I hope it's something more meaningful. Hell, there wasn't even a cutscene in the original one, was there? I felt I picked that to happen and suddenly it was true, zero interaction.

So jealous. I can’t play the demo cos I don’t have a Switch until the Roto Edition ships. I’m excited for the system, but I kinda wish they’d released it with the demo instead of the game.

Thank you! I’ll definitely look into these other sources of lore!

An idea that suggests itself to me is "how DQ characters/tropes evolve from game to game?" (e.g. the history of Lamia). I still need to listen to the first one, but I'm currently missing my headphones.

I had to skip out on getting the original version because I'm personally resolved not to get any new games until I've finished (or at least taken a respectable bite out of) my library of currently-owned games that I have yet to finish. But I would someday like to grab a Switch, and this is one of the games I'd like to play on it.

Based on the past year's releases and direction, there should be more boobies in the Switch version.

Makes sense. Tomoko and I were thinking of buying up a bunch of $20 Kubota sake in Japan that sells for $100 a bottle in the US, but ultimately we ran into that issue as well. We would be bootleggers if we did that.

You can emulate the Wii remote or any other standard input device compatible with the Wii using the keyboard, mouse, or a USB/Bluetooth keyboard. If you plan on playing games that utilize motion controls, it's possible to play without a Wii remote, but would be much better if you paired a real one via Bluetooth. You can emulate the Wii remote pointer with the mouse, but if you're already using a real Wii remote you might as well use a sensor bar as well. You don't need any particular brand (such as "dolphin bar"), any battery or USB powered one will work (even the one that comes with a real Wii would work, if you really wanted to leave your Wii powered on alongside your computer). "Sensor Bar" is a misnomer as it actually contains no sensors - it just houses a pair of infrared LED lights which the Wii remote's built in IR sensor picks up and uses to triangulate it's position.

I’m starting a play through of II mobile (to better make sure I can reference and compare versions for my hack more directly) and at the beginning, of COURSE, there’s the random name choices for the Prince and Princess. I realize, “Oh yeah! Those names should be in my rip.” I even went as far as to look up the Japanese version. Prince: For reference according to wiki And according to my mobile rip (Japanese on the left, English on the right) ランド (Rand) / Randolph カイン/Kain アーサー /Arthur コナン (Conan)/Conrad クッキー (Cookie, his Fortune Street Special name)/Caradoc トンヌラ (Tonnura)/Thomas すけさん (Sukesan)/Sigurd パウロ (Paulo?)/Paul And for the Princess アイリン/Eileen マリア/Maria セティア (Setia)/Fleurette (both names reference the same character from Dragon Quest Swords) ユーイ (Yui?)/Isolde プリン (Purin/Flan/Pudding, her Fortune Street name)/Peronel レナレナ (Lenalena? Renarena? I get stuff from DQX when I look her up)/Ginny リンダ (Linda)/Lynda サマンサ (Samantha)/Elaine Anyway, thought you might like to see these. The mobile was much closer to the Japanese than Dragon Warrior II was, but even the Japanese version has a few curve balls. Also, the previously thought NES exclusive item, Dragon Potion IS in the game. At least it’s listed in the game data. It’s called Rebirth Stone.

To celebrate the upcoming Legend of the Ancient Dragon expansion, I thought I'd post this topic detailing everything I know about DQX's story. Beware of spoilers. So, our story takes place in the world of Astoltia, known for its 6 main areas: Ogreed, Eltona, Dwachakka, Puku Land, the Wena Islands, and Rendashia. We start off as a random Human (we'll call him/her X) living in Etene, a small village in Rendashia. One day, the village is attacked by a strange guy with a scythe who calls himself Hades Nelgel. Wanting to get rid of a prophecied "heaven-sent child," the jerk burns down the village, kills everyone (including X), and seals Rendashia in a dark barrier. However, thanks to the power of a magic flower X had at the time, (s)he is brought back to life in the body of a random corpse that just recently died. (The Ogre froze to death. The Weddie was killed in a sword fight that was supposed to be a friendly spar. The Elf.....misfired a death spell? Someone correct that for me. The Puklipo......woke up in his/her coffin in a carriage. I'm pretty sure the dialogue did some explaining, but I can't read Japanese. The Dwarf........I don't know. I can't find the intro scene for Dwarves anywhere.) After some adventuring, X meets a sage who claims that he can help, but only after X gathers 6 sacred emblems. X does so, but is constantly tortured by visions of Hades Nelgel taunting him/her from afar. When the sage fails to break through the barrier, he tries to find help from a gal named Furukka, but she's a failure in whatever she does. Desperate, the sage pulls X from his/her body, which results in him/her meeting the corpse's original owner. X learns that the only thing that can penetrate Hades Nelgel's barrier is the Ark of the Heavens, a sacred vessel that was last seen 500 years ago. X travels back in time, witnesses some political problems between the Ogres and Humans, and despite defeating a demon named Razban, is unable to foil his ultimate plan (bringing Hades Nelgel to life). X finally makes it past the barrier, and climbs to Hades Nelgel's throne room, but doesn't account for the final trick up his sleeve. However, the trap fails, and the two finally battle square off, mano a mano. X wins and manages to escape, but Hades Nelgel's barrier remains intact. Using a magic compass, X makes it through the barrier into Rendashia, where (s)he has to find a "sleeping hero" who should, in theory, be able to ultimately destroy the barrier. On the way, X meets an (amnesiac?) girl who is trying to head to the kingdom of Gran Zedora. However, the road is blocked off to anyone who doesn't have 3 sacred butterflies, compliments of Princess Anlucea. X rounds up the butterflies, and meets the princess, who is actually an imposter, with the girl from earlier being the real Anlucea. The rest is mostly my guessing, but..........Anlucea turns out to be the "sleeping hero," and helps you defeat Hades Nelgel's boss, Great Satan Madesagora. If you have stuff to add here, don't be shy to post.

While fiddling around trying to update my old chat monitoring program, I happened across something in memory that lets me easily get the current dialog (i.e. what's printed in the large boxes at the bottom center of the screen) at any given time. As a result, I thought I'd go ahead and slap together an app to expose that to those players here who need help with Japanese and would like to at least be able to analyze the text, such as looking up a particular word or kanji compound or even put it through machine translation if that's your desire. I've tested it on two of my machines and it works fine and produces correct results, so hopefully it'll work for everyone who's interested. I want to make it clear that this program only reads strings from memory, it does not write anything so you're not at any risk of detection or banning if you use this. Known issues: every once in a while, it will fail to find what's on screen. In this case, just press the reset button and it'll find it after that. Also, when you talk to some NPCs, the regular towns people in particular, it will load all of the lines they'll say before the window closes at once rather than as they're displayed on screen. I might be able to address this, but it'll have to wait. Download dq10dm-v0.1

I dreamtrain have a dream. There's all sorts of mods out there rebalancing abilities and difficulty out there, such as FFT, the reloaded patches for Golden Sun 1 and 2, and there's one out there for DQV that lets you recruit more monsters, I'd love to one day see the same for Dragon Quest 6 and my objective here would be to see what the community that actually likes this game thinks, pool ideas and see how much interest there is in this happening, maybe we could crowdsource this eventually. First off something that would kick up the game as if you were playing under the Stronger Monsters Draconian Quest where major bosses can get up to 3 turns, are a bit more likely to use desperate attacks and get around 20% increase in stats (Exact value not confirmed), and grant them some new skills so they normally wouldn't have to keep you on your toes. Since you don't have any skills in the first third before Dharma/Alltrades, perhaps include a soft buff (not in stats, but get extra options for damage and mitigation) so you don't feel like you're doing Rhone with only boring plain auto attacks, I haven't really thought through this part of the game yet, let me know your thoughts if you disagree and would actually like it that way for that portion of the game. Secondly, a rebalance of the jobs so that everything feels useful and you feel a bit more encouraged to try the other classes and have more options to deal damage aside Focus Strength/Knuckle Sandwich on bosses (if its possible to tweak the resistances table for this), the point of a difficulty increase is not so that for bosses you have no choice but to do a turtle formation on bosses just doing 80 damage total each turn while you try to survive. I'm really against difficulty by inconveniencing, I think that's boring, if I want to hit like a wet noodle I'll turn to II or V, I really feel you should feel strong while fighting back the stronger monsters, and I feel XI achieved that with the draconian quests: in some turns you had to regroup because of the onslaught of damage and conditions, but when you could deal damage it was meaningful because of the selection of options you have, thats what I would like to achieve with a difficulty mod. At the same time I would recommend removing the free pass you get with just Boulder Tossing everything with gladiators at no cost. Also, as I'm not sure how much is feasible to edit the existing game, the scope would lie in using the existing abilities available in VI, but if it was possible to code in a few custom-mades that behaves like skills from IX and XI to grant diversity to the options available that would be great (in which case it would be worth to grant these new skills to enemies also so they hit keep you on your toes). Another thing I think would be worth editing, is the Whack resistance many abilities have that essentially makes them useless in most scenarios. I'll start with what I think is the class that requires the most rework: Ranger and its sub-classes, this path offers a lot of out of battle utility that I think would require further editing of the game out of combat so you feel they have an actual impact, but more on that later. The first thing this class needs is a lower battle requirement to unlock, lowered from a total of 435 down to 315 (In comparison the much stronger Gladiator requires 350 between Warrior and Martial Artist, and Sage needs 340 between Mage and Priest), this alone makes it somewhat more competitive with the other classes for it to be a path for Hero, some tweaks would also be added so that it's not an absolute chore to progress this class and the end result of this class path is to be a jack of all trades being a secondary damage dealer in comparison to the Gladiator and being a decent backup healer second to the Sage (mirroring the healing support Ranger gets in IX). Thief Monster Master Merchant Ranger So that is it for now, really open for suggestions so long as they make sense, enhance the gameplay in a fair way and aren't made up skills/classes that don't exist outside the world of Dragon Quest.

My number one feature, alternate marriages, is already in... so I’d have to go with Monster taming and maybe more casino games. I would also love to see more outfits from all the heroes of Dragon Quest like they did with VIII. Also a new ending and final boss would be sick as hell.

How on earth would the 3DS version be a rival to the Switch version? The Switch version is going to be based on the PS4 version (I HIGHLY doubt with how long it’s been under wraps it’s going to just be an upscaled 3DS version), and the 3DS version has a lot of different content compared to the console version. But this is Square Enix. They only self published 4 games on the 3DS during the last 7 years after all. They just don’t have faith in the handheld, unlike the DS before it where they gave it a lot of support.

@Woodus You might want to add a page for this data I'm about to impart: In Act 1, the moment the orbs are shown to Benedictus in Arboria allowing access to the First Forest, the game makes a copy of the full inventories of Erik / Veronica / Serena / Sylvando / Rab / Jade. Not the Luminary, just the other party members. This includes equipped items. At some point in Act 3, all of the equipment and items from those party members from that unique snapshot in Act 1 are copied over in an event that takes place. So all the items and equipment from that moment, upon giving all of the orbs to Benedictus in Arboria, are copied over and end up in your inventory. Now, because of this, there are certain 1-time only or limited supply equipment that can be copied over to allow doubles of, and certain items that probably should be copied over. Recommendations highlighted in green. Weapons: Banishing Blade (ATK 91/95/101/108, Parry Chance 2%, Bonus Damage vs Demons 10%) (Red Door <Hotto Steppe>) Assassin's Dagger (ATK 37/39/41/44, Chance to kill on hit 2%) (Caverns Under Octagonia) Nobleman's Knife (ATK 64/68/73/78, MMP 6/7/8/9, Charm 19/21/23/25, Chance to Beguile Humanoids 8%) (Red Door <Sniflheim Castle>) Pixie Pole (ATK 15/16/17/18, MMend 12/13/14/15, MMight 3/3/4/4, MP Absorb 2/2/2/3%, MP Regeneration 2/2/2/3, Chance to Beguile Nature 8%) (Grotta della Fonte) Rune Staff (ATK 23/25/27/29, MMight 21/23/25/27, MMend 16/17/18/20, MP Absorb 9%, Chance to Paralyze 8%) (Mini Medals <20MM>) Gracos's Trident (ATK 70/74/79/84, Parry 2%, Chance to Beguile Nature 8%) (Quest <Nautica - Up Where They Walk>) Starting Weapons that can be used in Duel Wield [Cobblestone Sword, Erik's Dagger, Serena's Wand, Sylvando's Sword] The other Starting Weapons [Cobblestone Greatsword, Veronica's Staff, Rab's Cane, Jade's Glaive] <- Rab's Cane can be used in battle Helmets: Trodain Bandana (There's only 1, and it's used up to create the improved version, so with 2 the original can be kept) (You start with it) Armour: Glombolero (DEF 40/42/44/46, MMight 17/18/19/21, Chance of Absorbing MP +20%) (Mini Medals <50MM>) Agility Gilet (DEF 45/47/50/53, Agility 15/16/18/20, Charm 38/40/43/46) (Mini Medals <45MM>) Trodain Togs (There's only 1, and it's used up to create the improved version, so with 2 the original can be kept) (You start with it) Vest for Success (+1% Chest drop rate) (1x for PSN Pre-orders only, sadly NOT AVAILABLE for everyone else, and for those people, this is the only Vest that is a MUST) Arriviste's Vest (+10% Gold, 15 cap, per battle, not very useful but only 1 available normally, 2 for Amazon Pre-orders) (Puerto Valor Casino <10,000T>) Elevating Vest (+10% EXP, 75 cap, per battle, not very useful but only 1 available normally, 2 for Gamestop Pre-orders) (Puerto Valor Casino <10,000T>) Uniforme de l'Academie (+1% Chest drop rate) (3x normally, in Act 1 no less, and only 3 women, so this is merely for those who just want extras for whatever reason) (Mini Medals <25MM>, Quest <L'Academie - The Agony and the Ecstacy>, Red Door <L'Academie>) Gallopolis Garb (1 only, only the Hero can equip, so this is only if you want an extra for whatever reason, like an extra one in the inventory to have a complete inventory if it's your favourite costume gear and he's still wearing it in Act 3) (Gallopolis <Silver Cup - Easy Mode first win>) Accessories: Gemma's Charm (because why not? It's a keepsake, and I'm curious if the original is used in the making of the better version, but either way it's from Gemma...they really should follow through on expanding this relationship in the Switch version) (Event <Gemma gives it>) Trickster (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, Evasion Rate +1/2/3/4%) (Quest <Gallopolis - A Cactus Cutlet to Die For>) Assassin (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, Critical Rate +1/1/1/2%) (Gallopolis <Silver Cup - Difficult Mode first win>) Shield-Bearer (DEF 10/12/15/20, Charm 5/6/8/10, Block Rate +1/1/1/2%, Parry Rate +1/1/1/2%) (Mini Medal <5MM>) Warlock (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, MMight 3/5/7/10, MMend 3/5/7/10, Spell Critical Rate +1/1/1/2%) (Quest <Lonalulu - My Secret Saint>) Vanguard (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, Agility 10/11/13/15, Chance to Start Pre-Emptive Battle +1/2/3/5%) (The Champs Sauvage) Supplicant (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, MP Regeneration per round 1/2/2/3) (1x for all players as a bonus, Arboria) Healer (DEF 2/2/2/3, Charm 5/6/8/10, HP Regeneration per round 3/5/7/10) (1x for all players as a bonus) Belle's Bow (Jade ONLY, DEF 10/11/13/15, Charm 20/21/23/25, MP Regeneration per round 3/4/5/6) (Quest <L'Academia - A Memorable Message>) Traveller's Hood (Hero ONLY, no other real purpose to this other than...if you like using it on the Hero but want to save the slot in the inventory then sure, or just want maximum counts possible, then sure) Other Useful Things that can be considered: Pep Pips (4 normally) Seeds (Skill <5x found, 4x from Sniflheim Crossbow, 3x bonus with every game copy, 3x or 15x pre-order bonuses> , Life <Metal Slime , Corpse Corporal> , Magic <Hypothermion> , Strength <Brownie, Troll> , Deftness <Pteranodon, Chillanodon> , Agility <Raven Lunatic> , Defence <Jockilles, Mosstodon> , Sorcerery <Professaurus> , Therapeusis <Wrecktor>) Falcon Blade (2x at this point, Mini Medal Reward <35MM>, Red Door <Isula Occidentalis - just North of The Strand>) Falcon Knife Earring (1x at this point, Red Door <Puerto Valor>) Wristorative (10/15/20/25 HP restored per round) (1x at this point, Red Door <Cobblestone>) ---====--- Now as to Farming Seeds, here's some advice: Get at least 8 (recommended 16 total) Bunny Tails from the Bunnicorns around Heliodor. Use the Campsite in the Heliodor region, get Erik + Hero to Pep State (easier early game, but the steal rate will be much easier), then save, and save scum Itemized Kill until successful (it's easier if you want for Serena + Veronica as you'll have one Robber Glove, and can more easily steal a second from the Robber Rabbits around Gallopolis, but still very doable here). Once a single Bunny Tail is procured, equip it, then just kill indiscriminately and with each new Bunny Tail, equip them to speed up the process. It isn't hard to get 8x with just Erik. Takes about 20 minutes maximum. If you wait until 2x Robber Gloves, it will probably be around 10 minutes...assuming Erik + MC are in the Pep State. It's easier to get them there if both Veronica and Serena are in the Pep state as well (rate of Pep is MUCH higher with just Erik + Hero alone, but overall it's just easier to farm later on). I do recommend getting at least 4x while you have just the Hero + Erik though. Do note that Itemized Kill requires the Hero learning Flame Slash, and Erik learning Half-Inch. Note, you do not have to upgrade any Bunny Tail, they give the same +1% chest drop rate regardless of upgrade level. Make sure everyone has the following things equipped before farming: Uniforme de l'Academie (all three women), and Bunny Tails in both slots on everyone. Best if the rotation is men only, keeping all three women in the active party at all times. Seed of Strength -> early hunting around the Gallopolis Southern Campsite, with 4x potential battles immediately on the way to Gallopolis, and 6x potential on the way to the Gondolia Checkpoint. An alternative is the SW-most island. Seed of Deftness -> Sniflheim region, lower section of the map, between the two spawning locations down in that oval shaped area of 2x and 3x Chillanodon Seed of Agility -> Around the ruins of houses just near the Ruins of Dundrasil, the Southernmost three houses especially, but anywhere in that Southern section. Seed of Magic -> Abuse the healing statue in The Other Side, and there are three platforms with at least two Hypothermions, probably the worst seed to farm for, and the one most easy to overlevel the party Seed of Life -> The Other Side, first area, or The Champs Sauvage at night, lower section near Phnom Nonh. Seed of Sorcery/Therapeusis -> Royal Library, floors 2, 3, and 4. Just go to town. Do realize that having only 1 monster in battle does seem to negatively impact chances, so Therapeusis will be easier to farm than Sorcery at this time.

Hopefully it doesn't have to come to that, but a lot of people are having far more problems with SE with the CE codes than I did for Amazon, and Gamestop purchasers are reporting for GS. Amazon took some time, but after four contacts they sent me the necessary codes. A few are still waiting though. Gamestop seems to be the same, but SE seems to be universally difficult. Apparently the only non issue is Steam, then PSN took a few days for some people. My biggest issue is that I live in New Mexico. Amazon's warehouse with my copy is in a suburb of Phoenix. There's a direct route from Phoenix to Albuquerque where I now live. Rather than send it there (and my potentially getting a copy on the 4th or 5th, as it was initially sent out on the 3rd), they flew it to Kansas City, Missouri. It's been sitting in Kansas City since Tuesday. No movement at all. One person on GameFAQs who works for Amazon and is a developer for their transport logic scripts attempted to explain to me how this is actually saving Amazon money and not Amazon simply assuring that 5~8 business days will actually be within 5~8 business days, and this is somehow far more cost effective for transport by some metric I haven't enough knowledge to see and understand without being part of his team. Can't explain why because that breaks protocol and whatever confidentiality agreements he signed, but c'mon, that's utter horsecrap. This is way more costly for them given major distribution routes directly from Phoenix and Albuquerque, as I've gotten quite a few packages from the same warehouses as that's the closest to me. Sometimes my packages get sent right away, but never games. Never ever games. Calling does nothing, but maybe I might take your post as a bit of advice, as talking to Indians in India to get service in the US is insulting.

It’s extremely frustrating not seeing Final Fantasy 8 or Dragon Quest 7 along side their brethren on my iPhone and iPad lol. I ordered a 2DS XL on Friday (I got the Pikachu one because it looks awesome lol 😂) and it will be in on Tuesday, according to Amazon. I’ve been 3DS-less for about a year now which is why I haven’t played it. I gave my New 3DS XL to my step-stone last summer along with my Pokémon games (I kept DQ 7 and 8 and my Zelda games though lol) because his got stolen and he was upset about it. I had hoped that DQ 7 mobile would be a year or a year and a half after the 3DS release so I didn’t rush out and buy a replacement 3DS. I’ve been replaying DQ 6 on my iPad and I said “Damnit I want to play the DQ 7 remake already.” So I went to Amazon to look at 3DS models and saw the Pikachu 2DS XL and said “Okay I’m buying that one.” I will probably get halfway through the 3DS version and SE will release the mobile version lol.

Thank you very much! I had quite a surprise on my un-birthday. On DQX, they threw a surprise party for me. I was in town with the usual group, when suddenly a huge number of Japanese players surrounded me and started singing Happy Birthday. Mimas was there as well. I'd like to share the card that Meimei, a player in Japan, mailed to me!

That will get you versions 1 through 3. Version 4 will have to be purchased separately if you want the Version 4 content. There is no all in one that includes Version 4 yet (It'll probably come in a few years). The disk might have more than one installer on it. You may have to run a few installers to get everything. There is going to be a product registration code which should be inside the game box. If you don't buy Version 4, you can still play versions 1 - 3. Some content such as the 100 level cap will require version 4 even if you aren't on the Version 4 story yet.

In fairness, Dragon Quest itself has always been iffy on worldbuilding and flavor (there was next to no flavor text in a mainline DQ game until VIII); this thread is in no small part an attempt to fix that. (It irks me, for example, that one of the bigger cosmic problems of IX goes decidedly unresolved even if you obtain 100% completion).

I visited a used game store and they had a ton of Nintendo Power magazines. Most of them were from 2000 or newer, but they had one issue, from May/June 1989, and it had a two page preview spread of Dragon Warrior for the NES. I can't remember if I included this when I found a bunch of the DW stuff before that Nintendo Power repository went down last year, but I scanned the 2-page spread for people to see, since it's been nearly a year since that anyways. I love the western spin on the art. Toriyama's style would have been just fine, but Trying to catch the D&D players for this series in the west, I understand.
