I'm sorry that I just noticed this topic. #1 - I'm sorry, but no one here is going to be able to help. That's not me being a jerk, that's just the reality of it. I'm a teacher and have had some mild experience with this kind of thing before, but online help can make you feel better a bit, but there's nothing we're doing that's going to really help much. You need help IRL. Please, please, please, let someone at school know about this. Talk to a guidance counselor. Talk to a trusted teacher. There's going to have to be some sort of intervention (and I've got no idea what - family counseling, ...?) to make this in any way better. YOU need to be the one to start this as you're already showing signs of needing that attention. Get help. Get it today. Talk to someone you know today. Please.

The other day on the DataHoarder subreddit, somebody posted an archive of around 90 GB of video game commercials dating backing to the 80s through to modern consoles. I looked through them and pulled out only the DQ ads as I thought someone here might want them. They aren't all very good quality, many of them having been captured from VHS and then compressed digitally, but for many of them I imagine they're the only copies in existence. There are Japanese as well as international commercials. Many of them, like some of the EU DQIX commercials I had never seen before. Here's an upload if somebody wants them, or if @Woodus wants them for the site. They're organized by game system in different directories. Around 180 video files at about 1.5 GB total zipped. https://www.mediafire.com/file/ucc8u3wx1wizd3p/DQ_Commercials.7z/file

Hi I recently started playing all of the DQ's because 11 was my first. The game is pretty enjoyable. It's a slow burn but in a good way. The summary is you basically play as a luminary to fight off the dark lord. If you've played DQ 1-3 those could essentially mean something of importance to you. My favorite character was Erik. Not only for his personality but because he is super OP when you have him in your party for farming metal slimes. You should really try it. I played it on ps4 and played literally nothing else until i finished it. The investment into the story is definitely worth it.

Hey thanks man. It makes me happy I can do this for people. Believe me, I'd LOVE to jump ahead and do the SNES remakes. I think you're right in that if I did do that, the other games wouldn't get done. I'm still a novice to rom hacking so I like to stay with what I know and what I'm used to, learning as I go, than jumping systems and having to learn new procedures, tools, etc. And I know people aren't exactly foaming at the mouth to play Dragon Warrior 2 of all games, but I don't want to leave gaps for possible newcomers who insist on playing the originals. Sounds great! I honestly don't know much about that stuff, just keep in mind with the rom expansion needed to accompany the script this definitely won't work on the original cartridge. Anyway, progress update. The script is pretty much finished and updated DW2's strange dictionary system mentioned a few posts back. The intro is definitely a conundrum for me. It's not just the text (DW2 had the third person narration, the monsters speaking) that's completely different, but the "choreography" of the sprites. I'm thinking of dumping the third person narration just for the intro and use the modern style *: labeling (there's no parenthesis in the game like DW1 so I'm going to use the asterisk for the various emotes in the game like sob or sigh). I hope to really capture and compare both versions side by side and see if it's possible to match them up. Oh and if you haven't checked, version DW1 1.3c featuring a ton of fixes based off reports and feedback is out. I think there's one little typo and another little title screen tweak by Chicken Knife for a future update otherwise it's pretty final.

And on today's episode of Hunting Atlas, I couldn't find any of the Wanted!, which is what I'm hunting (I must've seen three dozen of the brutes so far, and the only Wanted! I've seen so far killed me at the eleventh hour). I'd planned on mobbing one with about ten Multicoloured Mannequins I'd recruited (since I was trying to bump their hunted numbers up, which is a ridiculously high 300), but decided to spend them all on a regular Atlas instead. It was fun cruising around with nearly a dozen post-game critters mauling all the local slimes and what not, but I still need to kill a Wanted! Atlas. I'll try again later this week, --- Share your own Heroes-series tales below.

I actually have a Beta SP of a Dragon Quest VIII commercial that ran on MTV in 2005. I worked there at the time and when the commercial came in I know we typically junked tapes after they were digitized, so I asked the video team to return the tape to me when it was complete. I don't have a Beta SP player or a means to record the footage, though. At this point the tape is just some random DQ swag in my collection.

https://nintendosoup.com/rumor-more-dragon-quest-titles-could-be-ported-to-nintendo-switch-this-year/ I'm guessing that the Dragon Quest games in question is the ports of Dragon Quest I, Dragon Quest II, and Dragon Quest III that was released in Japan on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo 3DS. But who knows what might be ported over?

Just as a related story, there’s a bunch of songs from an unreleased Rilo Kiley demo tape out in the wild to download somewhere because a fan forum discovered it up for auction and assigned someone who could get the songs online to bid for them, and members donated towards it. That was a bit different though. Everyone got something out of it, and the person who did the legwork got a memento for their troubles. How can we be sure the community at large would benefit from this?

The best part about the reveal for the Definitive Edition? Your party members follow behind you. I sincerely missed this while playing DQ11 on my PS4. Seeing everyone in your active party follow behind you was awesome.

I'm considering making some custom NES carts to practice soldering/working on boards. I might do a Dragon Warrior > Dragon Quest (Re-Quest) conversion. (I'd only use a donor board if the cartridge was damaged and I already had to repair it.) If I can't find a DW1 board that needs repair (or another game using the same mapper), I'll get some aftermarket boards. There's a website that sells brand new boards for homebrew, I think they support a few different mapper types, and have slots where you can drop in EEPROM chips. They're made for stuff like this and homebrew.

Hello, Choppasmith! This is my first post here. This project is so amazing it convinced me to join and post to thank you for your amazing efforts. I just recently got into the Dragon Quest series, and have been plugging away at the original Dragon Warrior on NES. This version of the original game will be great to have alongside the official versions. I really appreciate your stance on tackling the games in chronological order, instead of just immediately jumping into the fan favorites first. I think it's more productive to do it the way you are now. Otherwise, one might lose interest and never get around to doing the less favorite games in the series. Doing them in chronological order is fair for everyone, I think. I will be following this project closely. Thanks again for your amazing work!

https://gematsu.com/2019/01/dragon-quest-xi-s-introduces-japanese-voice-actors-for-the-protagonist-king-carnelian-hendrik-and-more Whilst nothing major happened during the live stream, I think it's pretty cool to see some cutscenes with Japanese voice acting. And I think the Japanese voice acting is very solid. And whilst it probably won't happen, an option to toggle between English voice acting and Japanese voice acting in Dragon Quest XI S would be nice.

Unfortunately, many people who bought Dragon Quest XI on the PlayStation 4 and/or PC are very angry at Square Enix (and presumably Nintendo as well) since the new features that Dragon Quest XI S is getting (switching between 3D and 2D mode, switching between English and Japanese dub, etc.) is likely to be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version and may not come over to the PlayStation 4 and/or the PC version. And many people are demanding that Square Enix put a DLC patch (even it requires payment) that brings the new features of Dragon Quest XI S to the PlayStation 4 and/or the PC version; I'm guessing that many people would want that DLC patch to be released on the day Dragon Quest XI S is released.

The Link’s Awakening remake doesn’t look very good visually. It looks...weird. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s visual style isn’t clicking with me right now. I’m excited about the Dragon Quest news though. I also loved the line “There are RPGs, and then there’s Dragon Quest.” Dragon Quest top tier confirmed, plz don’t nerf. Also I’m looking forward to Fire Emblem Three Houses. I wish the character art had the Fire Emblem Echoes character art style since it was very good, but still, game looks fun.

I lost that battle because, right after I found Birgitta’s dog Laika, I found the shortcut in the same area. I took it, ended up going to the dead end where that trap was...and well, you know the rest. Basically I was at the point where half of my TP was gone for party members, and the two who still had most of their HP and TP (Nightseeker and Sovereign) couldn’t dish out damage fast enough to deal with the 3 enemies. I’ll just have to try again after work and do some extra exploring/use Birgitta’s free healing and gain an extra level or 2. I’ll admit I got a little overblown with my post last night, but that trap being in the very first labyrinth (and on the very first floor no less) is a bastard move from the devs.

Loving this game so far. Not very far in yet, 3rd floor of Lush Woodlands. Got a Hero, Pugilist, Zodiac, Sovereign and Survivalist. Not really sure what I'm doing subclassing yet, but if Platty says it's super late in, I've got time.

I'm not dead, jeez. Believe it or not, I started on Terry's Wonderland a long, long time before we announced anything about it. It took me many months, several times, to overcome all the hurdles to get to a playable point. Every now and again, I would run into another month long stumbling block. I just need to find time to get back on this again.

Of my suggestions, the Nightseeker + Arcanist combo is a totally viable one. I used that myself in EO4 along with my Sniper + Arcanist, the two focusing on ailment circles and binding circles respectively. If each tried to use one it would cancel the other out, but here’s the benefit: if a Nightseeker with a maxed out status circle uses said circle and it effects enemies at any point while active, that means the Nightseeker can go straight into attacking the next few turns. It also saves on investing points into Spread Throw and Auto-Spread, which can then be used for the ailment attack skills or for any support skills It comes down to the situations you find yourself in, as for a smaller group for example you could just have a Nightseeker use Poison Throw on one enemy, but I think Nightseeker + Arcanist is a strong choice of you’re unsure what to do. Things could be different in Nexus depending on how the two classes have been balanced since EO4, but I bet it would still be a very useful combo. Oh, and in case Arcanist has Poison Circle (I honestly don’t remember if they do or not) don’t worry about that one. If they do have Poison Circle and of memory serves me right, the poison damage from it isn’t very impressive in the long run.

Really? That's very interesting - it means they're not just a commonly-picked address, it means that the game just defaults to calling illegal moves HighJump. So the randomizer must randomize both families and moves through some sort of naive 'pick a number from 0 to F'/'pick a number from 00 to FF' change and the author didn't bother checking that those values corresponded to valid families/moves. *** I can't contribute because I'm basically ROMhack-illiterate. I second all comments about rarity being the way to go - it's the closest thing the game has to a ranking system. Pokemon can use Base Stat Totals, but base stats work differently in DWM. With regard to randomizers, though: Necessities: Somehow the randomizer would have to be hard-coded to give at least one Water monster and at least one monster with a Dance move in Pirate. Pokemon can be randomized easily because the game bars progress based upon widely-teachable techniques, not on specific types, specific species, or natural learnsets. Hard-coding it to spawn ArmyAnt and MadGopher in either Oasis or Pirate would make life significantly easier as well. Perhaps that would be a toggleable option for people who enjoy the added challenge of breeding them. Make sure monsters are only being given the base versions of moves. The other randomizer seemingly handed out the most advanced versions willy-nilly, which is how an average playthrough could get atrocities like enemies having WhiteAir in Kid's Class. That was extremely memorable in all the wrong ways. Kid's Class somehow needs to be filtered to prevent monsters with powerful moves from showing up. This isn't a difficulty issue, it's a mechanics issue. Skills generally have set damage ranges. A monster that has enough MP to cast RockThrow will do 75-100 damage before resistances are factored in. At Oasis, this is fatal - you can grind past that, but it's prohibitively tedious. Options: Randomized levels are a direly bad idea, but it might be possible to implement a slider like the Pokemon randomizer currently has (levels are change to a user-chosen set percentage of the original value, which can be in the range 50%-200%). Randomized stats always make a horrific mess of balance, but that's part of the fun. DWM 1&2 are already somewhat unbalanced during the storyline due to monsters with Growth Type 27 (a.k.a. Grizzly's ATK and WhipBird's HP) - the DWM speedrun focuses heavily on WhipBird to survive the later battles at low level, and the DWM2 speedrun's team consists of Grizzly and something to appropriately buff Grizzly. Reserving Growth Types of 28-31 for high-rarity monsters seems like it would preserve balance decently. Doing the same to Growth Type 27 would make the resulting game more balanced than the base game. The Universal Pokemon Randomizer has a "similar strengths" setting to prevent things like Legendary Pokemon attacking you in the first area and the final boss using rats and pigeons. Perhaps "rarity" could be used here. One thing about DWM is that "families" have stereotypical traits (Birds and Bugs level up quickly, Bosses take forever to level up, Dragons resist fire, etc.), but this is coded per-monster rather than as some sort of 'family' effect. Ideally there would be an option to place different weights on growths, growth speed, and resistances according to randomized family. Map randomization strikes me as way too hard to do to the base worlds. While DWM1's random map generation has been analyzed, I don't think that would be useful for generating DWM2-style maps, much less ones that could be used for story areas. Breeding randomization strikes me as roughly as insane as evolution randomization. I've done randomized Pokemon runs with that, and one of the key ways to exploit that is to take all the weak monsters that evolve early and grind them up in the hopes of getting an early Legendary. DWM is much worse because there are 10 non-Boss families, which gives 90 generic breeds out of the 312 monsters (or 315 with Kagebou, Dimensaur, and Lamia) - your chances of hitting strong monsters just through throwing enough random monsters at each other are unfortunately high, which wrecks the entire point of the breeding mechanic. There's the added complication that this may make some monsters completely inaccessible, though randomized Magic Keys may fix that. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. I don't know how to write a program that overwrites values in the ROM, so I'm not qualified to comment beyond this.

Oh yeah, it's a great way to transfer files, especially in business. Or let's say you've made a bunch of family videos you want to transfer to a family member, or maybe some company that is going to splice them together for a collage or montage of some sort. It's a great way to transfer with limited loss or corruption, given it splits everything into smaller bytes and checks the consistency and authenticity of each small byte/packet as it's completed, then drops any inaccurate pieces and redownloads them again.

Well, my PC is back online. I forgot to re-check "automatically obtain DNS" on my wireless connection.

Basically everyone I know is aware that I’m on Reddit, but nobody knows of the Den. They don’t know what Dragon Quest is but everyone knows what Reddit is!
