So does anything actually bad happen if you name the hero a bad word?

Recommended Posts

Some Dragon Quest games try and warn you bad things happen to those who name the hero something bad, mainly swear words. I remember in DQ6 DS I jokingly wanted to try and name someone “S hit,” just remove the space, just to see if the game would let me. All of a sudden I got the message from the renaming man how this would have serious consequences of some kind.

Are these negative consequences a real thing across the various DQ games, or just a joke where nothing bad actually happens? I don’t know if this “mechanic,” is in the original versions of games, as I’ve only seen it in remakes.

Huh, I wasn't aware of this. My only idea is that it disables online or ad-hoc functionality (So you might not be able to send Dreams in DQ6, for example, as your hero's name is attached to them. Or maybe it just censors your name if you share Dreams.)
