Big Book of Beasts

Recommended Posts

I just recently purchased the Big Book of Beasts in Fortuna and noticed that I had missed a few enemies back in the earlier stages of the game. The Ghost I know I can encounter elsewhere, but I missed the Screwball Pitcher and from what I've been able to find they only exist during the First Generation of the game when you're a child.

So my question is since I missed this monster, am I missing out on any prizes if you complete the Big Book of Monsters? I know in DQIV you get 300,000 casino tokens, but does DQV give a reward for completing the book?

If it does, I never got it. So, I guess to my knowledge, it doesn't. And I think you can still encounter weaker enemies via T n T boards.

Interesting to know. I completely forgot about those T'n'T Boards. I figured since you can't recruit monsters on the board they wouldn't count towards the Book of Monsters, but I guess they do.

Speaking of recruiting, are there any known missable recruitable monsters from the 2nd Generation to the end of the game? I've been trying to recruit them all as I go, but there are a few that I'm having a lot of trouble with (Ticking Timeburrm and Walking Corpse... of all monsters) and I'd much rather come back later in the game to grab the ones I missed if I can.

There are NO missable recruitable monsters. All of those can be gotten in the third gen. There are however, missable entries to the Big Book. For example, I believe some of the first couple monsters you encounter in the game may be missable so just make sure you kill enough of everything while you're in that first cave. Also, the Winter Palace that you go through as a kid disappears after you beat it so be sure to get all of the entries there. They are also some other ones that I can't think of offhand that are in the ocean that can only be gotten in gen 2.

Thanks for the info, Zenlon! I made sure to defeat at least a dozen or so of every monster in the 1st Gen just to be safe. My first play-through I missed the Screwball Pitcher which can be encountered near the Ancient Ruins and NW of Coburg... wasn't too happy with that.

Anytime :) I'm a big fan of the DS games so any other questions you may have I'd be happy to help!

I know the Burr Baby and the Boring Bug don't appear anywhere else besides the Whealbrook Adit when you're a kid as I drove myself crazy looking for them afterward. The Screwball Pitcher that ShdwDragn mentioned can be missed as well. Also, I've read that the monsters that you encounter in the water using the ship you get in Monstroferrato when you go to get the Circle of Water can be missed.

However, I've been told that every monster can be encountered on the T'n'T board so none are permanently missable, but that seems like it would take forever and a day to find ones you want.

I had to find a few monsters through T'n'T. It takes a good while, and you have to be within a specific range of levels to find certain monsters.

It's quite a pain but at least it allows players to find monsters that can be missed.

After restarting my first game because I missed a few monsters in G1 (it just bothers me too much to miss stuff), I've finally caught up to where I left off. I'm about to take on the imposter queen at Coburg and I was wondering which monsters are really worth using at this point? I've got my trusty Slime Knight, of course, but I'm looking for a couple others to start building up to balance out my group. At this point I've just been using my Slime Knight and my Slime (not bad with the Falcon Knife Earrings), but there has to be some better choices out there. I'd rather not use a Healslime simply because my Slime Knight already knows Fullheal, so I'm thinking another physical attacker would be good.

What you use at that point in the game is really up to you. The slime knight can pretty much be used to the end so I'd stick with him. Healslimes will be outclassed soon enough, besides the slime knight can heal well enough. I was extremely lucky in my last game to recruit a metal slime in the tower so I used him for a while. Small frys may be fun to use as they get fire breath and have decent resistances. If you like physical attackers I would try getting a Restless Armor but that may be too hard since their recruit rate is like 1/64 or something. You should be getting Sabre back soon and I usually stick with him for a bit.

Whatever you do, give the Hero Bianca's ribbon. It'll come in handy in the future.

Not sure what the odds are of recruiting a Metal Slime, but by some twist of fate I was able to grab one. I think I'll stick with my Slime Knight and Metal Slime until I find something better.

Consider yourself lucky -- Metal Slimes have a 1/256 recruitment rate, which when combined with their penchant for fleeing, makes them the second-hardest monsters to acquire behind only Liquid Metal Slimes.

When I played the original version on the SNES several years back I don't ever remember recruiting any of the metal enemies, and I killed hundreds. After checking my Book of Monsters, I was able to recruit a Metal Slime after only 37 defeated... so yeah, I guess I did get lucky. Then again, I've defeated 289 Ticking Timeburrms and 254 Restless Armours and still haven't been able to snatch one. Don't really understand that business.

Sometimes the recruitment in V defies logic. I got a metal slime without trying on my 4th or 5th kill, but then it took me literally DAYS and hundreds upon hundreds of King Slimes to finally get one.

Likewise, I got a LMS after only twentysomething kills, compared to about 700 Barbatos.

Hey all does anyone know if and where I can fight more can fight more frighturns and caniboxes? I almost have my monster book complete, but I don't have the drops listed for those two.
