Several commercials for Dragon Quest XI have appeared. The game releases in Japan on July 29th. No word on a localization yet.

Its no wonder Dragon Quest does so well in Japan compared to here ... advertising and Squenix JP giving more than 2 shits about it. If the game has any chance of doing well outside of Japan, it needs the same level of advertising and giving a damn in other areas.

That second video however is fairly disturbing.

In all fairness, Dragon Quest can get that level of advertising and marketing push BECAUSE it's such an institution in Japan.

At the same time, its unnecessary for exactly the same reason. In order for it to be an institution anywhere else, it needs to be shown to the masses.

Too bad it doesn't get this level of marketing in the West. It'd do much better if it had.

All Square Enix need to do to make this game a hit in the west is to just make the second trailer viral and advertise the game as a psychological horror game. Perhaps something similar to I have no mouth yet I must scream.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream didn't have that kind of campaign. It's become well known over the last couple of years, but I don't ever remember it being all that popular back then. The viral marketing campaign you're think of is more of a Dead Space 2/Outlast kind of thing.

Yeah that's true, its amazing how effective Dead Space 2's strange marketing was. The reason I said I have no Mouth yet I must Scream is because that boulderbomb reminds me of Ted from the novel. Maybe that will be the big twist ending, the big bad will just turn the hero into a random monster.

Eh. Why hate the Japanese for eating whale? They've been doing it for almost a thousand years.

...So you haven't actually got a reason, then?

'Cause, from where I stand, whaling basically amounts to hardcore fishing. I'm not sure there's a valid comparison between "fishing for large mammals" and "falsely treating human beings as property."

'Cause, from where I stand, whaling basically amounts to hardcore fishing. I'm not sure there's a valid comparison between "fishing for large mammals" and "falsely treating human beings as property."

This "hardcore fishing" has led to the decline of whale male populations and to Japan enroaching upon the waters of other countries (see Australia). That and the methods they use to hunt are cruel and stress inducing. It's just as bad as the deforestation of the Amazon in terms of long term damage. These whales are important to the ecosystem yo and if Japan doesn't listen there won't be much more of them. I'm glad there's no hunting tradition in Ireland, well, except for those idiots who hunt foxes. They're a nuisance.
