I'm glad FF7 didn't win. It was a flagship title for the PS1 that got way, way way way way way too much hype. FF8 and 9 were leagues better, and they didn't sequels, movies, card games, or well, anything beyond Laguna being in Dissidia 2.
Technically FFVIII and IX would have been the games with the hype, because Final Fantasy VII's success is what drew all the attention to the sequels. The RPG genre was not mainstream, so for FFVII to do so well it had to rely solely on its quality. Like it or not, FFVII is the widely accepted better game of the three playstation releases. Personal preferences and different groups will have varying opinions, but the phenomenal success story speaks for itself.
On topic, I haven't participated in a contest in a long time... I should have, I would have predicted Necrosaro's Castle (I nominated it

), but that ship has long since sailed. As for the other contest... yeah, I would never have predicted Earthbound. Heck, I wouldn't have even predicted it would have made it to the top 16. Oh well, stranger things have happened.
